Eosacantha is an extinct genus of tortoise beetle in the family Chrysomelidae and containing a single species Eosacantha delocranioides. [1] The species is known only from the Middle Eocene Parachute Member, part of the Green River Formation, in the Piceance Creek Basin, Garfield County, northwestern Colorado, USA. [1]
Eosacantha delocranioides is known only from one fossil, the holotype, specimen number "USNM 79136". The specimen is complete but of unidentified sex, preserved as a compression fossil in sedimentary rock. It was recovered from outcrops of the Green River Formation's Parachute Member, locality 41140, exposed in the Anvil Points area of Garfield County, Colorado, USA. [1] The type specimen is currently preserved in the Department of Paleobiology collections housed in the National Museum of Natural History, located in Washington, D.C., USA. Eosacantha was first studied by Caroline S. Chaboo and Michael S. Engel of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA. Their 2009 type description of the genus and species was published online and in print in the journal Systematic Entomology . [1] The generic name was coined by Chaboo and Engel from a combination of the Greek ἠώς (eos) meaning "dawn" and the Greek word ἄκανθος (akanthos) meaning "thorny". The etymology of the specific epithet delocranioides is in reference to the general resemblance to some modern species in the genus Delocrania . [1]
When described, Eosacantha delocranioides along with Denaeaspis chelonopsis were among the oldest derived tortoise beetles in the fossil record. The nearest modern relatives to Eosacantha in the tribe Notosacanthini are restricted to African, tropical Asian, and Australian regions. [1] The loss of the tribe from North America may be related to specialization of the beetles to specific plant hosts that were lost due to the extensive climatic shifts during the Late Eocene – Early Oligocene transition. [1]
The E. delocranioides type specimen is a well-preserved complete adult preserved in a dorsal view showing the antennae and head in full view. The front edge of the pronotum is deeply indented with the head and antennae visible. The elytra are preserved with a clear yellowish coloration with a darkening of the elytra towards the marginal disk. The type specimen is small: 3.12 millimeters (0.123 in) wide by 3.2 mm (0.13 in) long. The antennae, composed of 11 segments, are notably short in length and have an overall clavate morphology. Antennomeres seven through eleven form a weak club at the tip of the antenna. [1]
The Stephanidae, sometimes called crown wasps, are a family of parasitoid wasps. They are the only living members of the superfamily Stephanoidea. Stephanidae has at least 345 living species in 11 genera. The family is considered cosmopolitan in distribution, with the highest species concentrations in subtropical and moderate climate zones. Stephanidae also contain four extinct genera described from both compression fossils and inclusions in amber.
The Cassidinae are a subfamily of the leaf beetles, or Chrysomelidae. The antennae arise close to each other and some members have the pronotal and elytral edges extended to the side and covering the legs so as to give them the common name of tortoise beetles. Some members, such as in the tribe Hispini, are notable for the spiny outgrowths to the pronotum and elytra.

Both species were originally placed in the living raphidiid genus Raphidia, as Raphidia funerata and Raphidia mortua respectively. before being redescribed and transferred to the newly erected genus in 2014.
Archiinocellia is an extinct genus of snakefly in the family Raphidiidae known from Eocene fossils found in western North America. The genus contains two species, the older Archiinocellia oligoneura and the younger Archiinocellia protomaculata. The type species is of Ypresian age and from the Horsefly Shales of British Columbia, while the younger species from the Lutetian Green River Formation in Colorado. Archiinocellia protomaculata was first described as Agulla protomaculata, and later moved to Archiinocellia.
Prodryas persephone is an extinct species of brush-footed butterfly, known from a single specimen from the Chadronian-aged Florissant Shale Lagerstätte of Late Eocene Colorado. P. persephone is the first fossil butterfly to be found in North America, and is exquisitely well preserved. Its closest extant relatives are the mapwings and African admirals of the genera Hypanartia and Antanartia, respectively.

Archimyrmex is an extinct genus of ant in the formicid subfamily Myrmeciinae, described by palaeoentomologist Theodore Cockerell in 1923. The genus contains four described species, Archimyrmex rostratus, Archimyrmex piatnitzkyi, Archimyrmex smekali and Archimyrmex wedmannae. Archimyrmex is known from a group of Middle Eocene fossils which were found in North America, South America, and Europe. The genus was initially placed in the subfamily Ponerinae, but it was later placed in Myrmeciinae; it is now believed to be the ancestor of the extant primitive genus Myrmecia from Australia. Despite this, Archimyrmex is not a member to any tribe and is regarded as incertae sedis within Myrmeciinae. However, some authors believe Archimyrmex should be assigned as incertae sedis within Formicidae. These ants can be characterised by their large mandibles and body length, ranging from 13.2 to 30 mm. They also have long, thin legs and an elongated mesosoma (thorax) and petiole.
