Erkin Tuniyaz [lower-alpha 1] (also spelled Arkin Tuniyaz; born December 1961) is a Chinese politician of Uyghur ethnicity who is the current deputy secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xinjiang Committee and chairman of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in office since 30 September 2021. He is a member of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Biography

Erken Tuniyaz was born in Aksu County, Xinjiang, in December 1961.

After graduating from Changji Normal School in 1983, he stayed at the university and worked successively as deputy secretary and secretary of the Communist Youth League of China. After a short period of working in the Department of Personnel Matters of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in August 1992, he was dispatched to the Organization Department of the CCP's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Committee, where he eventually rose to become deputy head in October 1999. In February 2005, he was transferred to Hotan Prefecture and appointed deputy party secretary and mayor. In January 2008, he was appointed vice chairman of Xinjiang, and was promoted to member of the standing committee of the CCP Xinjiang Regional Committee, the region's top authority. [1] [2] [3] On 30 September 2021, he was named acting chairman of Xinjiang, replacing Shohrat Zakir. [4] On 27 January 2022, he was formally elected as the chairman by the 13th People's Congress of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at its fifth session. [5] On 18 January 2023, he was elected as the chairman for a full term by the 14th People's Congress of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. [6]

He was an alternate member of the 19th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and a member of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

U.S. sanctions

On 10 December 2021, the U.S. Department of the Treasury added Erkin to its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list. Individuals on the list have their assets blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them. [7]

The Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, also known as the SDN List, is a United States government sanctions/embargo measure targeting U.S.-designated terrorists, officials and beneficiaries of certain authoritarian regimes, and international criminals. The list is managed by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). When individuals are added to the list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN), their U.S. assets are blocked. Moreover, their names are added to automated screening systems used by banks in the United States and many foreign countries, making it difficult for them to open or hold accounts, transfer monies, or transact property internationally. Any individual or entity that provides support related to terrorism, drug trafficking or unauthorized military use to any person or entity appearing on the SDN list risks being penalized under the USA PATRIOT Act.

Adil Nurmemet is a former Chinese politician of Uyghur ethnicity. He was the Mayor of Hotan, an important city in the Xinjiang interior, between 2009 and 2013. He was investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in October 2014.

Her superiors, Li Zhi and Nur Bekri, both were sacked for graft in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Ren is the first senior official in Xinjiang and the fifth senior official in China to be targeted by China's top anticorruption watchdog in 2020. She is also the fifth female ministerial level official in China caught since Xi Jinping's continues an anti-graft dragnet at all levels of government, military and ruling Communist Party.

Peng Jiarui is Chinese military officer and politician currently serving as vice chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and vice chairman of the Xinjiang Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He previously served as commander of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. He joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in December 1983. He was a representative of the 17th, 18th, and 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. He is a delegate to the 13th National People's Congress.

Wang Mingshan is a Chinese politician currently serving as secretary of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Political and Legal Affairs Commission since January 2021. He is a member of the standing committee of the CCP Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee, the region's top authority.

Qadirbek Qamza is a Chinese politician of Kazakh ethnicity who is the current vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
