The Lagos State Executive Council (informally, the Cabinet of Lagos State) is the highest formal governmental body that plays important roles in the Government of Lagos State headed by the Governor of Lagos State. [1] It consists of the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Commissioners who preside over ministerial departments, and the Governor's special aides.

Functions

The Executive Council exists to advise and direct the Governor. Their appointment as members of the Executive Council gives them the authority to execute power over their fields.

Past cabinet (2019-2023)

The past Executive Council [7] was serving under the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration who took office as the 15th Governor of Lagos State on 29 May 2019. [8] [9] [10] In the months after the inauguration, Sanwo-Olu nominated various members of the Executive Council, mostly in batches on July 15 [11] and August 13. [12] On January 18, 2020, a small reshuffle was conducted which moved three Commissioners to new roles, moved two Special Advisers to become Commissioners, and appointed three new Commissioners. [13] [14]

She also helped the federal government to improve the civil service fund reserve.

The Lagos State Judiciary is one of the three co-equal branches of the Lagos State Government organized under the Constitution of Nigeria and laws of Lagos State. The Chief Judges are appointed by the State Governor with the consent of the House of Assembly.

Lagos State Government is the government of Lagos State, concerned with the administration of the state ministries. The government consists of the executive, legislative and Judiciary. The government is headed by the Governor who is the policy-maker and often assisted by the commissioners and other civil servants of the state.

The 2019 Lagos gubernatorial election was conducted on 9 March to choose the Governor of Lagos State. The election was held concurrently with various state level elections. Incumbent APC Governor Akinwunmi Ambode lost to the APC flag bearer Babajide Sanwo-Olu at a direct primary election in October 2018 and hence ineligible to run for second term under APC. Babajide Sanwo-Olu won in a landslide against Jimi Agbaje of the PDP who had previously run unsuccessfully for Lagos state governor twice. From 1999, Lagos state has been governed by AD, AC, then ACN, three parties which subsequently formed part of the coalition that birthed the APC in 2013.

Cecelia Bolaji Dada was a former vice-chairman of Apapa Local Government and current commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Lagos state.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, is the 15th Oniru of Iruland. He was born to late Chief Taoreed Lawal Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and Olori Muinat Olabisi Abeni Ajasa. He is from the Ojora, Aromire, Shokun and Abisogun branch of Oniru royal families of Lagos State. He became the 15th Oniru of Iruland on 7 June 2020 after the death of Oba Idowu Oniru in September 2019. He was presented with the staff of Office by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 7 June. 2020. Prior to his enthronement, he was the Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State.

Uzamat Akinbile Yussuf also known as Uzamat Folashayo Akinbile Yussuf, She is a pharmacist, youth activist, a politician and philanthropist. She is the current commissioner for Ministry of Tourism Lagos State, her portfolios was changed from Lagos State, Ministry of Home Affairs to Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lagos State.

Yetunde Arobieke is the current commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs for Lagos State.

The 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Lagos State, concurrent with elections to the Lagos State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was eligible to run for re-election and was renominated by his party.
