He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in 2022,finishing in second place behind Austin Davis with 25% of the vote. Since leaving public office in 2022,Sims has served as the Managing Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Out Leadership. In 2023,he joined the Board of Trustees of the Tyler Clementi Foundation.

When elected in 2022,they were the first out LGBTQ+ member in the Kentucky House of Representatives. They are only the second out member of the Kentucky General Assembly following Ernesto Scorsone,former state senator,who came out while in office in 2003. After Scorsone left the legislature in 2008,there was no LGBTQ+ representation in either chamber until Herron.

He has also served a minority whip. He is the first openly gay man to serve in the South Dakota legislature. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He worked for several years in philanthropy and in 2024 became CEO of Lost&Found,a suicide prevention nonprofit.
