Falcon is the second studio album by English rock band the Courteeners. It was released through A&M Records on 22 February 2010. While touring the United States in 2009 as part of promotion for their debut studio album St. Jude (2008), the band wrote new material on their tour bus. In August 2009, the band recorded its follow-up with Ed Buller at ICP studios in Brussels, Belgium. Falcon has an arena and indie rock sound, influenced in part by the work of Elbow, and is slower-paced than their previous album.
Before the end of 2009, the Courteeners played two shows in the United Kingdom. "You Overdid It Doll" was released as the lead single from Falcon in February 2010, which was then promoted with a tour of the UK the following month. "Take Over the World" followed as the second single from the album in April 2010. Over the next few months, they played at various festivals, leading up to another UK tour in late 2010, with support from Miles Kane and I Am Kloot. "Lullaby" and "Scratch Your Name Upon My Lips" were released as a Double A-Side single in December 2010.
Falcon received generally favourable reviews from critics, many of whom commented on the shift in musical direction. The album reached number six in the UK, after selling 24,000 copies in the first week of its release. Alongside this, it also appeared at number seven in Scotland and number 52 in Ireland. "You Overdid It Doll" charted at number 24 in Scotland and number 28 in the UK, while "Take Over the World" peaked at number 114 in the UK. Falcon was certified gold in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry in 2014.
The Courteeners released their debut studio album St. Jude in April 2008, peaking at number four in the UK Albums Chart. [1] [2] All of its singles – "What Took You So Long?", "Not Nineteen Forever" and "No You Didn't, No You Don't" – reached the top 40 in the United Kingdom, with "Not Nineteen Forever" peaking the highest at number 19. [2] The band promoted the album with two tours of the UK, shortly after its release, and one near the end of 2008. [1] [3] They played two UK shows prior to supporting Morrissey on his tour of the United States in April and May 2009. [4] [5] During one of the UK shows, they debuted three new tracks, namely "Sycophant", "Tear Me Apart" and "Good Times Are Calling". [6]
While touring the US, the Courteeners wrote new material on their tour bus with guitars, shakers and keyboards. [7] By July 2009, they were also performing "Bojangles". [8] For seven weeks from August 2009, the band recorded their follow-up at ICP studios in Brussels, Belgium. By this point, they had accumulated 26-to-27 songs for their next album. [9] In between sessions, they performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. [10] Ed Buller produced sessions, while Lee Slater acted as engineer. Michael Bauer mixed all of the recordings, bar "Take Over the World", which was done by Jeremy Wheatley. [11]
Falcon is an arena rock and indie rock album that Fray said was partially influenced by the work of Elbow. [12] musicOMH contributor Camilla Pia noted that the Oasis influence of their debut had "pretty much disappeared" with Falcon, though it was replaced with a "Glasvegas, U2 and most of all Elbow" sound. [13] AllMusic reviewer Heather Phares said Buller "helped them slows things down and take them more seriously" as musicians. [14] Drowned in Sound writer Aaron Lavery referred to it as a "slower, much more introspective prospect than its predecessor, with Fray’s lyrics softened by time spent on the road". [15] Touring member Adam Payne contributed piano and keyboards throughout the album's songs. [11]
The album starts with the string-enhanced "The Opener", which sees Fray discuss his hometown and his relationship with his girlfriend. [13] [14] "Take Over the World" straddles between the indie sound of the band's past work and balladry, evoking "Viva la Vida" (2008) by Coldplay during its chorus sections. [16] [17] "Cross My Heart & Hope to Fly" features staccato guitar parts in the vein of the xx. [17] "You Overdid It Doll" recalled the upbeat rhythm of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" (1978) by Rod Stewart and the overall funk sound of Reverend and the Makers. [16] [18] "Lullaby" is a 1980s-esque synth-pop song that is followed by "Good Times Are Calling", which has a Doves-esque structure and a start-stop chorus. [8] [19] "The Rest of the World Has Gone Home" deals with the theme of loneliness in the style of Babyshambles, while "Sycophant" is a rock song that touches on folk and psychedelia. [17] [20] [21] The rock balladry of "Cameo Brooch" is followed by "Scratch Your Name Upon My Lips", a love song detailing a long-distance relationship that spans 6,000 miles, incorporating rhythms used by Franz Ferdinand. [14] [22] [23] "Last of the Ladies" is a piano ballad, leading into the closing song "Will It Be This Way Forever", which has electronic influences and apes the work of Oasis. [15] [16] [21]
"Cross My Heart & Hope to Fly" was made available as a free digital download from the band's website on 7 December 2009. [24] A promotional seven-inch vinyl record was released featuring an alternate version of "Sycophant". [25] The following day, Falcon was announced for release in two months' time. [26] Following this, the band ended the year with two one-off gigs, one at Parr Hall in Warrington and the second at the Central Convention Complex in Manchester with support from Buzzcocks and the Whip. [27] [28] On 5 January 2010, the album's track listing was posted online. [29] The music video for "You Overdid It Doll" was posted on YouTube on 4 February 2010. [30] The song was released as the lead single from the album 11 days later; the CD edition included "I Never Wanted To". [29] [31] Two versions were released on seven-inch: the first with "Whites of Her Eyes", while the other featured "Social Fireworks" and a live version of "You Overdid It Doll". [32] [33] Shortly after this, the band played a small show as part of the NME Awards. [34]
Falcon was released on 22 February 2010; a two-disc deluxe edition was also released, featuring "Revolver", "Bojangles", "You're the Man", "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch" and "Forget the Weight of the World". [29] [35] The Japanese version included "Meanwhile Back at the Ranch", "Revolver" and the non-album track "That Kiss" as bonus tracks. [36] It was promoted with a tour of the UK in the following month and an appearance at a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit show. [37] [38] The music video for "Take Over the World" was posted on YouTube on 23 April 2010. [39] The song was released as the album's second single on three days later. [40] The CD version included "Piercing Blues", while the seven-inch vinyl edition featured "Why Do You Do It?" and a demo of "Take Over the World". [41] [42]
Between June and August 2010, the band performed at the Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, T in the Park, iTunes, Oxegen, Underage and V Festivals. [43] In November 2010, the band played at The Big Reunion festival; the following month, they embarked on a short tour of the UK, with support from Miles Kane and I Am Kloot. [44] [45] The Electric Lick EP was released on 5 December 2010, consisting of two new songs "Three Months" and "Swear Down", a cover of "Zero" (2009) by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, in addition to "Lullaby" and "Scratch Your Name Upon My Lips"; the ten-inch vinyl edition included . [46] The following day, "Lullaby" and "Scratch Your Name Upon My Lips" were released as a double A-side single. [47] The band released their first video album, titled Live at Manchester MEN Arena, in December 2011, which had been filmed at the Manchester arena in December 2010. Falcon was met with generally favourable reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, the album received an average score of 63, based on nine reviews. [51] AnyDecentMusic? gave it an average score of 5.3, based on 14 reviews. [50]
Phares theorised the shift in sound "comes from a need for the band to prove that there’s more to their sound than breathless rock and sneering lyrics". Though she added that "too much soul-baring is as bad as too many putdowns; maybe next time the band will find some balance between the extremes of this album" and the previous. [14] Chris Roberts of BBC Music felt there was "enough musical flourishes and pining ballads to earn the band the Elbow comparisons they blatantly desire". [18] Pia saw it as a "marked improvement" from their debut, praising the "newly discovered emotional depth to Fray's songwriting", while lambasting the band for not pushing themselves beyond their influences. [13] Digital Spy writer Alex Fletcher, on the other hand, stated that the band had "too much chug in their guitars and anthemic ambition to be billed as copyists of Elbow's more intricate and delicate stylings". [20]
Laver criticized the band for offering "nothing more than backing for the entirety of the record," which he felt ran at a "rather pedestrian pace". [15] The Guardian editor Will Dean wrote that "most things fall between the cracks – either sub-Guy Garvey/Conor Oberst ballads [...] you just suspect the Courteeners could do better". [16] Yahoo! Music reviewer Julian Marszalek wrote that "what hampers" the album was the "small and obvious palette that they paint from - a soupcon of Oasis here, a dab of Elbow there and some typical indie garnishes all over the place". [53] Ally Carnwath of The Observer echoed a similar sentiment, stating that "[t]here's a development of sorts here but it extends only to leavening brash indie swagger with bolted-on string sections and heart-on-sleeve anthemics". [54] The Line of Best Fit writer Erik Thompson thought it "relies too heavily on repetitive, unimaginative choruses and very little on authenticity and heart". [17]
Falcon peaked at number six in the UK Album Charts, selling 24,000 copies in its first week of release. [2] [55] It was certified silver and gold in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The Remote Part is the third studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released on 15 July 2002 by Parlophone. As they were becoming increasingly aware of their label's interest in them and their demos, the band's musical direction was being steered by guitarist Rod Jones. For the first half of 2001, the band recorded songs with producers Stephen Street and Lenny Kaye. Due to the uneven nature of the songs done between tours, they spent some time reworking 20 tracks in the Scottish Highlands. They recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, RAK Studios in London, and Sawmills Studios in Cornwall with producer Dave Eringa. Described as an alternative rock and indie rock record, it lacked the punk rock elements of their previous work.
Hope Is Important is the debut studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released 26 October 1998 through Food Records. After finalizing their line-up and releasing two singles in 1997, the band released their mini album Captain in early 1998. Afterwards, the band signed with Food Records, and recorded their debut album between February and June 1998 at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire and Westland Studios in Dublin with producer Paul Tipler. Described as a grunge and punk rock album, Hope Is Important was compared to Bleach (1989) by Nirvana.
Tourist is the second studio album by English rock band Athlete. It was released on 31 January 2005 through Parlophone. During the promotional cycle for their debut studio album Vehicles & Animals (2003), the band wrote material for its follow-up. Recording sessions were done at Helioscentric Studios in East Sussex, The Dairy in London, and Athlete's studio in London. Victor Van Vugt produced the majority of the tracks, while John Cornfield did the rest; Athlete is credited with producing all of them. The album is a soft rock release with elements of electronic music, taking influence from the works of Coldplay, Doves and the Flaming Lips.
Out of Nothing is the fourth studio album by English rock band Embrace. It was released on 13 September 2004 through the label Independiente. Following the release of their third studio album If You've Never Been (2001), the band were dropped by Hut Records; around this time, the general public had lost interest in them. After signing to Independiente, they took time working on new material, until early 2004, when they recorded their next album at Olympic Studios in London with producer Martin "Youth" Glover. Out of Nothing is an indie rock album that drew comparison to the works of Coldplay and Keane.
The Back Room is the debut studio album of British rock band Editors; it was released on 25 July 2005 through Kitchenware Records. The Editors formed while attending university and later moved to Birmingham, where they played club shows and made demos. After signing to Kitchenware in late 2004, the band recorded their debut album at studios in Lincolnshire, London and Wolverhampton. Jim Abbiss produced all but one of the tracks; the exception was produced by Gavin Monaghan. The Back Room is a post-punk revival, gothic rock and indie pop album that has been compared to the works of Echo & the Bunnymen, Elbow and Interpol.
Myths of the Near Future is the debut album by English rock band Klaxons. It was released on 29 January 2007 through Polydor Records. Following their debut single, the band coined the term "new rave" to refer to their sound; not long after their second single, they signed to Polydor Records. They recorded their debut album with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco at The Premises and Parkgate Studios. Myths of the Near Future, which takes its title from a poem, is a science-fiction concept album about the future; some of the song's titles and lyrics are literary references to the works of J. G. Ballard, William S. Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon. To critics, its sound recalled the indie dance-punk revival led by bands such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand.
Roots & Echoes is the fifth studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 6 August 2007, through Deltasonic. During the promotional cycle for their third studio album The Invisible Invasion (2005), guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones left and subsequently re-joined the band. Recording for their next album occurred between August 2006 and February 2007 at three different studios, Wheeler End, Konk, and RAK. Craig Silvey and the band co-produced the majority of the material, aside from two songs that were produced by Ian Broudie. Described as a psychedelic rock and pop album, Roots & Echoes took influences from doo wop and R&B.
Beyond the Neighbourhood is the third studio album by English rock band Athlete, released on 3 September 2007 by Parlophone. After touring in support of their second studio album Tourist wrapped up by early 2006, the band met up to exchange ideas for new songs. Soon afterwards, they built their own studio in Greenwich, London and opted to produce their next album by themselves. They experimented with beats and did jam sessions; different parts of the album were mixed by Ben H. Allen and Cenzo Townshend. The songs on Beyond the Neighbourhood mixed electronica and rock, while the themes tackle topics such as the effects of modern living, war and global warming.
Everything's the Rush is the third studio album by British rock band Delays. It was released on 5 May 2008 through Fiction and Polydor Records. As touring in promotion for their second studio album You See Colours wrapped up in 2006, the band decamped to Space Mountain in Spain with producer Martin "Youth" Glover to work on its follow up. After recording one song at Mayfair Studios in London, recording concluded after 20 days in total. Everything's the Rush is an indie pop album that recalls the sound of their debut studio album Faded Seaside Glamour (2004), with the addition of orchestral elements.
Courteeners are an English band formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in 2006 by Liam Fray, Michael Campbell, Daniel "Conan" Moores and Mark Cuppello (bass); the last was replaced by the band's producer Joe Cross in 2015. They previously toured with pianist Adam Payne, who has been featured on every album, but in 2019 was replaced with Elina Lin. In December 2012, the band dropped "The" from their name, continuing simply as "Courteeners". In 2024, Cross and Lin became official members of the band.
St. Jude is the debut studio album by English rock band the Courteeners, released on 7 April 2008 by Polydor Records. There is also a special edition album which includes a second disc of acoustic versions of songs which feature on the actual album. Although the album was released to mixed reviews from critics, it has become a somewhat cult success though many fans are more favorable to the versions of songs seen on Here Come the Young Men EP and various other demos. In support of the album the band embarked on a European tour.

Anna is the third studio album by British rock band Courteeners. It was released on 4 February 2013 through V2 Records and Cooperative Music. Following their second studio album Falcon (2010), the band took a break at the end of 2010. They played a few shows in 2011, spending most of the year working on their next album, debuting some new songs in the process. After frontman Liam Fray broke his ankle, he re-listened to the material they had up to that point and felt they could be improved on. Following a meeting with Joseph Cross, he was enlisted to produce the band's next album; sessions were held at 80 Hertz Studios. Anna is an indie pop album that leans more into the electronic elements found on Falcon.

Mapping the Rendezvous is the fifth studio album by British rock band Courteeners, released on 28 October 2016. The album was announced in August while "The 17th" was made available on streaming platforms. In November the band embarked on a UK/European tour in support of the album.
Revelations is the third studio album by English rock band Gene. It was released on 1 March 1999 through Polydor Records. When they released their second studio album Drawn to the Deep End in 1997, it was a commercial success, but did not meet the label's expectations. Polydor was hesitant about letting them record another; sessions were mainly held at Rockfield Studios in Rockfield, Wales with producer Hugh Jones. The band produced one song at Maison Rogue in London. Revelations was compared to the band's debut studio album Olympian (1995), though lacked the Smiths influence found there. A few of the songs criticize British politicians, such as Tony Blair.
More. Again. Forever. is the sixth studio album by British rock band Courteeners. Following their fifth studio album Mapping the Rendezvous (2016), the band released a reimagined version of their debut studio album St. Jude (2008) and scrapped an album's worth of new material. After a co-writing session with Rich Turvey and a tour of the United Kingdom, frontman Liam Fray wrote the majority of what would appear on their next album in early 2019. Recording for it concluded by April 2019; More. Again. Forever. is a pop and psychedelic album that takes influenced from the work of LCD Soundsystem, as well as a period of addiction and self-improvement that Fray went through.
