Federal Medical Centre Ebute-Metta, Lagos is a tertiary hospital located in Nigerian Railway Corporation Compound in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. [1]
Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, Lagos was established in 1964. It started out as the Department of Health Services of the Nigerian Railway Corporation. It was created exclusively to cater for the health needs of NRC staff and their families.
During the Nigerian Civil War, it became an annex of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idiaraba, Lagos for the treatment of wounded soldiers.
On May 26, 2004, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the upgrading of the Nigerian Railway Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre and on 31 January 2005, the hospital was formally handed over to the Federal Ministry of Health as a Tertiary Healthcare Institution and designated as Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. It is a training institution for Resident Doctors and House Officers in Anaesthesia, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Radiology and Surgery. [3]

Mental healthcare generally refers to services ranging from assessment, diagnosis, treatment, to counseling, dedicated to maintaining and restoring mental well being of people. In Nigeria, there is significant disparity between the demand and supply of mental health services. Though there are policies aimed at addressing mental health issues in Nigeria, in-depth information on mental health service in Nigeria is non-existent. The Jaekel House is a 2-storey colonial mansion in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Nigeria. The house was built in 1898 on a large expanse of landscaped land and named after the late Francis Jaekel OBE, a former superintendent of the Nigerian Railway Corporation who retired in the 1970s after almost three decades of active service. Jaekel House was formally the residence of the General Manager and was later converted to a senior staff rest house. The building has been renovated and restored by Professor John Godwin in collaboration with the Railway Corporation in 2010. The building is now a “mini Museum” showcasing photographic archives dating from 1940s through to 1970s of personalities, places, historical events in pre- and post-independent Nigeria and houses artefacts of the old Railway Corporation. It's also one of the fairy tale wedding locations in Lagos.
Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola OON(born 1958) is a Nigerian professor of medical microbiology, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. She specializes in disease control, particularly HIV/AIDS. Ogunsola was provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos and is reputed as being the first woman to occupy the position. She was also the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution between 2017 and 2021. She was acting vice chancellor of the University of Lagos for a short period in 2020 when the university was plunged into crisis as a result of the removal of the Vice Chancellor by the University Council.
In Nigeria, an early career doctor (ECD) is a medical or dental practitioner in the early phase of their professional career post-graduation. This includes house officers, resident doctors and medical officers below the rank of principal medical/dental officer (PMO/PDO). This term is more widely used in Nigeria compared to the junior doctor in the United Kingdom and Australia. Although Junior Doctors may seem synonymous with ECDs, ECDs embraces more cadres of doctors than junior doctors especially as it is in the UK or Australia. They may be engaged in training or non-training position at this point in their professional development. Those in training positions while rendering service include House physician or house surgeon and resident doctors. While medical officers and senior medical officers or the dentistry categories are in the non-training position. Generally, this period usually spans about the start of a career to fifteen years depending on the path an early career doctor chose for their professional development.
