Gelotia lanka is a species of jumping spider of the genus Gelotia . It is endemic to Sri Lanka. [1]

Behavior

G. lanka normally moves by steadily stepping forward, pausing and then continuing again, accompanied by palp and leg waving. They can leap over obstacles, but normally choose to walk around them instead. This spider has no trouble walking on any kind of web or silk, not adhering either to cribellate or ecribellate types of spider silk. [2]

Their hunting mechanism is, like most spartaeines, somewhat different from most salticids, where G. lanka tends to lunge at prey from close range rather than leap from far range. They will also invade the webs of other spiders to feed on them. By plucking upon the webs of other spiders(usually using their palps but occasionally their front legs as well) and making specialized vibratory signals, Gelotia lanka tries out different manners of plucking. When a method which works is found, the spider reuses it and lures the host spider over to the Gelotia. Finally, the resident spider is killed and consumed. They do not spin webs, though they do hang up dead leaves in the webs of other spiders on which to rest and oviposit. [2]

This spider will also hunt cursorial spiders and insects, attacking them via close-range lunging. [2]

Ecology

Gelotia lanka was found by researchers in rainforest at Kaneliya, Sri Lanka. They seem to be very rare, as the scientists conducted jumping spider-related research in that region but only managed to find two adult female individuals of Gelotia lanka. [2] Information on their ecological interactions apart from their predation on other spiders is still lacking.

This species is very similar in hunting strategy and some characteristics to the other spartaeine genera Brettus, Cyrba and to some extent Portia. [2]

Cosmophasis umbratica is a species of jumping spider found in South and Southeast Asia. These spiders are known for their brilliant, shiny ultraviolet light. They are members of the family Salticidae and the genus Cosmophasis. They are commonly spotted on green vegetation. Spiders are air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs, chelicerae with fangs generally able to inject venom, and spinnerets that extrude silk. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all orders of organisms. <i>Portia fimbriata</i> Species of spider

Portia fimbriata, sometimes called the fringed jumping spider, is a jumping spider found in Australia and Southeast Asia. Adult females have bodies 6.8 to 10.5 millimetres long, while those of adult males are 5.2 to 6.5 millimetres long. Both sexes have a generally dark brown carapace, reddish brown chelicerae ("fangs"), a brown underside, dark brown palps with white hairs, and dark brown abdomens with white spots on the upper side. <i>Portia schultzi</i> Species of spider

Portia schultzi is a species of jumping spider which ranges from South Africa in the south to Kenya in the north, and also is found in West Africa and Madagascar. In this species, which is slightly smaller than some other species of the genus Portia, the bodies of females are 5 to 7 mm long, while those of males are 4 to 6 mm long. The carapaces of both sexes are orange-brown with dark brown mottling, and covered with dark brown and whitish hairs lying over the surface. Males have white tufts on their thoraces and a broad white band above the bases of the legs, and these features are less conspicuous in females. Both sexes have tufts of orange to dark orange above the eyes, which are fringed with pale orange hairs. Males' abdomens are yellow-orange to orange-brown with blackish mottling, and on the upper sides are black and light orange hairs, and nine white tufts. Those of females are pale yellow and have black markings with scattered white and orange-brown hairs on the upper side. P. schultzi has relatively longer legs than other Portia, and a "lolloping" gait.

Portia africana is a jumping spider found in Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Zaire and Zambia. Its conspicuous main eyes provide vision more acute than a cat's during the day and 10 times more acute than a dragonfly's, and this is essential in P. africana′s navigation, hunting and mating.
