The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly (GBA) [1] formerly known as Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) is a 33-seat unicameral house of elected representatives of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

History

The Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly was formed as a part of the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order in 2009 which granted the region self-rule and an elected legislative assembly. [2] The first Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections were held in 12 November 2009 which Pakistan Peoples Party won by 20 seats.

In the 2015 elections, Pakistan Muslim League (N) won 22 seats, [3] Islami Tehreek Pakistan with 4 and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen with 3 seats.

Composition

As per the results of the 2009 elections, [4] the assembly is split between members of the left leaning and secular Pakistan Peoples Party, the centre-right Pakistan Muslim League, the secular and liberal Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and the Islamist Jamiat Ulema e Islam. In a special by-election in 2011, a candidate from the Balawaristan National Front won a seat from Ghizer with slightly less than 50% of votes cast in his favor. [5] In Sept 2013, FM Nashad from SKD 3 LA 8 won the elections with the majority after Wazir Shakeel resigned from the membership. FM Nashad earlier served as Deputy chief executive for 5 years. He belongs to PML(N).

GBA-24 (Ghanche-III)

GBLA-24 (Ghanche-III) is a constituency of Gilgit Baltistan Assembly which is currently represented by Muhammad Shafique of Pakistan Muslim League (N).

2013 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial election

Provincial elections were held in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 11 May 2013, alongside nationwide general elections and three other provincial elections in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab. The remaining two territories of Pakistan, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, were ineligible to vote due to their disputed status.

Shah Salim Khan is a former Pakistani politician and entrepreneur disqualified from the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly for having defaulted on a loan by the National Bank of Pakistan. He is the son of the 6th Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan.

Fida Muhammad Nashad is a Pakistani politician from Gilgit Baltistan who served as the 2nd speaker of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. He was a member of the Pakistan Muslim League N. He joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He is the chairman of Baltistan Culture and Development Foundation (BCDF).

Jafarullah Khan is a Pakistani politician who is the member of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly and serving as Deputy Speaker of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly. He is a senior member of Pakistan Muslim League N (PML-N). He is serving the office since 2015.

2009 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election

2009 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Elections was an election held in the province of Gilgit-Baltistan for the first time to elect the first Assembly of Gilgit-Baltistan. Polling took place in 12 November 2009.

2015 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election

The 2015 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections were held on 8 June 2015. Elections were held in 24 constituencies, each electing one member to the 2nd Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly. 269 candidates contested these elections, either representing one of the political parties of Gilgit-Baltistan or being an independent candidate.

2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election

The 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections were held on 15 November 2020. Elections will be held in 24 constituencies, each electing one member to the 3rd Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly. 330 candidates will contest these elections, either representing one of the political parties of Gilgit-Baltistan or being an independent candidate.

Islami Tehreek Pakistan

Islami Tehreek Pakistan commonly known as ITP is a Pakistani political party founded by Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi in 2014. The party's symbol are two swords.

Nawaz Khan Naji is a Pakistani politician who is member-elect of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly.

Balawaristan National Front (Naji) Separatist organization in Pakistan

The Balawaristan National Front (Naji), more commonly known as the BNF(N), is a minor political party of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan which calls for Gilgit-Baltistan to be given autonomy while still remaining a part of the federation of Pakistan.

Rehmat Khaliq is a Pakistani politician who is member of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly.
