The ministry oversees the expression of Syrian foreign policy, the protection of the interests of the Syrian Arab Republic and the interests of Syrian citizens abroad, as well as the representation of the country to other countries and international organizations.

The Muhammad Naji al-Otari government was the second Syrian government formed during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. It was announced on 10 September 2003, by Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Mero. The cabinet lasted until 29 March 2011, and resigned in the wake of the Syrian Civil War.

The Third Hasina ministry was the cabinet of the People‘s Republic of Bangladesh headed by Sheikh Hasina that was formed after the 2014 general election which was held on 5 January 2014. The Awami League was assured of victory, with its candidates declared victors in 127 of the 154 uncontested seats by default. The elected MPs and Cabinet were sworn in on 9 January.

The second Hasina ministry was the Government of Bangladesh during the 9th legislative session of the Jatiya Sangsad following the 2008 general election, and serving from 6 January 2009 until 24 January 2014.

The Prime Minister of Jordan, Hani Al-Mulki, was tasked with forming a cabinet on 29 May 2016. The new cabinet was sworn in by King Abdullah II on 1 June 2016. After the September 2016 general election, Mulki formed a new cabinet. The Cabinet consisted of 28 members, three of them also serving as Deputy Prime Ministers. 11 Ministers returned from the latest formation of the previous cabinet of Abdullah Ensour, while 9 others had served in earlier cabinets. 8 Ministers had no previous experience in cabinet. Four women obtained a position as Minister. Three university presidents were appointed to Mulki's cabinet: Rida Khawaldeh, Wajih Owais and Mahmoud Sheyyab. The cabinet reformed the Ministry of Youth, which had been abandoned in 2012.

This replaced the caretaker ministry formed in July. The government is the 96th since Syria gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and is the ninth during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad.
