Gurdaspur is a city in the Majha region of the Indian state of Punjab, between the rivers Beas and Ravi. It houses the administrative headquarters of Gurdaspur District and is in the geographical centre of the district, which shares a border with Pakistan.

Gurdaspur city was named after Mahant Guriya das ji. [2] The Emperor Akbar was crowned at Kalanaur, which is 26 km from the city.

Demographics

According to the 2011 India census, [3] Gurdaspur had a population of 2,299,026 (1,212,995 males and 1,086,031 females). There was a 9.30% increase in population compared to that of 2001. In the previous 2001 census of India, Gurdaspur District had recorded a 19.74% increase to its population compared to 1991. According to religion, Hindus made up 68.9% of the city's population, with Sikhs making up 24.8%. [4]

The average literacy rate of Gurdaspur in 2011 was 81.10%, compared to 73.80% in 2001. The male and female literacy rates were 85.90% and 75.70%, respectively. For the 2001 census, the rates were 79.80% and 67.10% respectively. The total literate population was 1,668,339, consisting of 928,264 males and 740,075 females. Sex ratio is about 895 females per 1000 males. Population Density was 649 per square km. [3]

Politics

The city is part of the Gurudaspur Assembly Constituency and Gurdaspur (Lok Sabha constituency).

Education

Gurdaspur is home to a variety of elementary and secondary schools. [7] [8] [9] The city also hosts several degree-level and engineering colleges, providing diverse educational opportunities. Among these is Beant College of Engineering and Technology, established by then-Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995 and upgraded to a university in 2021. Additionally, the Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus in Gurdaspur offers quality education, further strengthening the region's academic landscape. [10] [11] The city is also home to the nationally accredited Institute of Hotel Management, Catering & Nutrition, recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, India. [12]

This Gurbani text was written by the 5th Guru, Guru Arjan (1563–1606) at Amritsar in around 1602. The Namdharis or Namdhari Sikhs, also known as Kuka, are a Sikh sect that differs from mainstream Sikhs chiefly in that they believe that the lineage of Sikh Gurus did not end with Satguru Gobind Singh (1666–1708) in 1708, as they recognize Satguru Balak Singh (1797–1862) as the 11th Guru of the Sikh religion, thus continuing the succession of Sikh Gurus through the centuries from Satguru Nanak Dev to the present day. Their 12th Guru is Satguru Ram Singh [1816–1885(disputed)], who moved the sect's centre to Sri Bhaini Sahib (Ludhiana) and is regarded as the first Indian to use non-cooperation and non-violence boycott in order to combat the British Empire in India.

Kalanaur is a tehsil in Gurdaspur District of Punjab state in India. It is located 25 km towards west from District headquarters Gurdaspur. This historical town is situated on newly constructed National Highway 354. The town has historical significance as Mughal Emperor Akbar, was enthroned in a garden near the Kalanaur by Bairam Khan. It was first established as a Principality by Prince Nakhashena, a brother of King Janamejaya, which was further ruled by his descendants known as Jarral Rajputs. Jarral rule in Kalanaur lasted for 350 Years.
