Hastings Aerodrome( ICAO : NZHS) is a small airport located in Hastings, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. It is sometimes referred to as Bridge Pa Aerodrome. It is owned and operated by the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club Inc. [2]
The airport is situated on the Heretaunga Plains and there are two eighteen hole golf courses adjacent to it. The settlement of Bridge Pa is located close by. The aerodrome is located eight kilometres west of the Hastings central business district.
Scheduled airline services in and out of Hawke's Bay are generally handled at the larger nearby Hawke's Bay Airport located in Napier.
The Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club was New Zealand's second aero club, being incorporated on 12 November 1928. On 3 August 1932 the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club purchased an 80-acre block of land next to the Hastings Golf course for a new aerodrome, and on 20 January 1933 the Aero Club opened a new club house, which still exists on site as the old club house, several hundred metres away from the current modern club house. New Zealand Aerial Mapping Ltd purchased its first plane in 1936 - a Monospar ST25. NZ Aerial Mapping has been based at Hastings Aerodrome ever since, and it is New Zealand's oldest aviation company. The company headquarters are located in the Hastings CBD. [4]
In 1939 when World War II broke out, pilot training stepped up to provision trained pilots for the Air Force. Hawke's Bay received an initial quota of 12 trainees, which was supplemented with an extra five pilots every eight weeks. The Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club linked with the Air Training Corps and in line with a national move agreed to give the Government its planes in the event of war. With the outbreak of war the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club effectively went into hibernation. By March 1940, 32 of the clubs trainees had joined the RNZAF, the RAAF or the RAF.
The operations of the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club resumed in January 1946 with the end of the war.
In 1968 the Hawke's Bay Skydiving Club was born based at the Hastings Aerodrome, and in that same year the Hawke's Bay Gliding Club built its hangar base at Hastings Aerodrome. In 1976 full runway strip lighting was installed for the main runway. Two years later in 1978 the main runway was sealed when New Zealand Aerial Mapping sealed a 1000-metre landing strip to accommodate its new and larger aircraft. [5]
Hastings Aerodrome is an uncontrolled airport. It has three runways. 01L/19R is sealed and is 1075 metres in length. 01R/19L is a parallel grass runway to the sealed runway and is 880 metres in length, which is often referred to as the 'grass runway 01' or 'grass runway 19'. There is also a cross runway, 11/29 which is 884 metres in length. This runway is sealed for 295 metres on the 29 threshold until it meets the main sealed runway, and then the rest of the runway is grass.
Hastings Aerodrome is busy and is used by a diverse range of operators. In addition to the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club, other organisations based at Hastings Aerodrome include a Microlight Club, Gliding Club, Skydiver Club, two Helicopter Operators, two aerial Agricultural Operators, Hawke's Bay Avionics Ltd aircraft avionics and engineers, New Zealand Aerial Mapping Ltd, and an Aircraft Servicing and Sales Business. There are many privately owned aircraft at Hastings Aerodrome along with a group of amateur aircraft builders. [6]
Air Hawke's Bay, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hawke's Bay & East Coast Aero Club, is a registered aviation college and air charter company that specialises in full-time integrated fixed wing pilot training for both domestic and international students, and air charter services. It was the first New Zealand air academy to be accredited with CAA Part 141 and is also approved for Air Transport Operations conducted under CAA Part 135 certification. Air Hawke's Bay has NZQA accreditation and the academy is also a Signatory to the Code of Practice for International Students. The academy is one of five Air New Zealand FTO partners, offering greater outcomes in the airline industry for its graduates. The academy trains forty percent of its pilots from overseas. [7]
Wellington International Airport is an international airport located in the suburb of Rongotai in Wellington. It lies 3 NM or 5.5 km south-east from the city centre. It is a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air. Wellington International Airport Limited, a joint venture between Infratil and the Wellington City Council, operates the airport. Wellington is the third busiest airport in New Zealand after Auckland and Christchurch, handling a total of 3,455,858 passengers in the year ending June 2022, and the third busiest in terms of aircraft movements. The airport, in addition to linking many New Zealand destinations with national and regional carriers, also has links to major cities in eastern Australia. It is the home of some smaller general aviation businesses, including the Wellington Aero Club, which operates from the general aviation area on the western side of the runway.
Whangārei Airport is an airport 4 nautical miles to the south east of Whangārei city, in the suburb of Onerahi, on the east coast of Northland in the North Island of New Zealand. The airport has a single terminal with two gates.
Palmerston North Airport, originally called Milson Aerodrome, is an airport in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand, serving Palmerston North City and the Central North Island regions. It is located in the suburb of Milson, on the outskirts of Palmerston North, New Zealand, approximately 5.5 km (3.4ml) NE from the central business district of Palmerston North City. The airport is 100% owned by the Palmerston North City Council and covers an area of 208ha. The airport is New Zealand's 8th busiest and handled a total of 515,727 passengers in the 2016 financial year. The airport handles around 30 commercial passenger flights per day to and from Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson as well as cargo flights on week nights between Auckland and Christchurch.
Ardmore Airport is an airport 3 nautical miles (5.5 km) southeast of Manurewa in Auckland, New Zealand.
Tauranga Airport is an airport serving the city of Tauranga, New Zealand. It is located adjacent to Tauranga Harbour in the suburb of Mount Maunganui, approximately 3 km northeast of Tauranga CBD. The terminal is located to the north of the runway, on Jean Batten Drive, and consists of a two-storey building with four tarmac gates. Air New Zealand serves the airport, with flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. A further two regional airlines also operate to the airport, as well as scenic and charter flights, skydiving operations and general aviation.
Kaikoura Airport is an uncontrolled aerodrome located 4 nautical miles southwest of Kaikōura at Peketā in the South Island of New Zealand.
Camden Airport is an aerodrome located on the outskirts of Sydney, 1 nautical mile northwest of Camden, New South Wales, Australia. The airport is located approximately 60 km (37 mi) from Sydney's central business district. Camden is used as a general aviation overflow airport for the busier Bankstown Airport, and provides facilities for gliding and ballooning. The aerodrome has one grass runway and one paved runway and two glider airstrips. It is in the south-west corner of the designated Sydney flight training area.
Hawke's Bay Airport, commonly referred to as Napier Airport, is Hawke's Bay's main commercial airport, serving domestic flights to the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and smaller centres such as Gisborne. The airport is located in the north of Napier and 20.7 km from Hastings.
Kapiti Coast Airport, also spelt Kāpiti Coast Airport and previously called Paraparaumu Airport, is on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand's North Island, between the Wellington dormitory suburbs of Paraparaumu Beach, Paraparaumu to the east, and Raumati Beach to the south. The Wharemauku Stream flows through part of the airport's land.

Hood Aerodrome is an aerodrome, located in Masterton, New Zealand, it is located 1 NM South West of the town centre in the suburb of Solway. The aerodrome was named after George Hood, a pioneer Masterton aviator who died trying to make the first Trans-Tasman crossing in 1928. The aerodrome is used extensively for general aviation flights, and has also been used for commercial flights, Air New Zealand stopped serving the airport from 5 February 2014. Two new airlines have looked at re-instating a service to Auckland using larger aircraft but the runway will need to be lengthened to 1400m and widened to 30m first before it can start.

West Auckland Airport Parakai West Auckland Airport is a general aviation (GA) airport on the North Western edge of Auckland, New Zealand. Wairoa Aerodrome is a small airport located at the end of Airport Road, on the northern outskirts of Wairoa, in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Wairoa Aerodrome provides a service for light aircraft and is used mainly for charter operations. In 2023 Sunair commenced a Napier to Wairoa route.
Kaikohe Aerodrome is an airfield south-east of Kaikohe in the Northland region of New Zealand. Built in 1942 as a US Marines bomber base, is the largest grass strip in the Southern hemisphere used now by general aviation. Other than powered aircraft, gliders use the airfield, and an area next to the runways is used by model airplane flyers. There are skydiving operations as well, with a landing spot near the old terminal.
Maitland Airport, also known as Russell Field is a general aviation airport located in the suburb of Rutherford, approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from Maitland in the Australian state of New South Wales. There are currently no airline services, with the airfield catering mostly to general aviation and recreational category aircraft. The airport has been owned and operated by the Royal Newcastle Aero Club since 1963 and shares a large training area with the nearby Cessnock Airport. Throughout its history, the airport has played host to many airshows, races and flying competitions. The field is named for the fifth President of the Royal Newcastle Aero Club, Robert Russell, who suffered a fatal heart attack while on the premises in 1966.
Mangere Aerodrome, named after a nearby suburb, was the original home of the Auckland Aero Club. It is now the site of Auckland Airport. Mangere Aerodrome's claim to fame was as the arrival point for New Zealand aviator, and aeroclub member, Jean Batten's solo flight from the United Kingdom in 1936. The RNZAF requisitioned the aerodrome from 1939 until 1944, renaming it RNZAF Station Mangere. In 1961, the Auckland Aero Club moved to Ardmore aerodrome and Mangere Aerodrome closed. The new Auckland Airport opened in 1965.
Caboolture Airfield is an aerodrome catering to general aviation and ultralight aircraft located in Caboolture, Queensland, Australia, approximately 55 km (34 mi) north of the state capital Brisbane, adjacent to the Bruce Highway. The airfield is maintained and operated by the Caboolture Aero Club Incorporated and shares a large training area with nearby Caloundra Airport and Redcliffe Airport. The airfield is a popular site for the restoration of historic aircraft and a number of associated businesses are located onsite.
Motueka Aerodrome is the airport serving Motueka, New Zealand, and is owned and managed by Tasman District Council.
