Panay Gulf is an extension of the Sulu Sea, reaching between the islands of Panay and Negros in the Philippines. The gulf contains the island-province of Guimaras and extends into the Iloilo Strait, between Panay and Guimaras, and into Guimaras Strait, between Guimaras and Negros. Guimaras Strait connects Panay Gulf with the Visayan Sea.

The name itself should not to be confused with the country of Jordan, which had its capital at Amman. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 39,566 people, making it the third largest settlement in the province.

It is the capital city of the province of Iloilo, where it is geographically situated and grouped under the Philippine Statistics Authority, but remains politically independent in terms of government and administration. In addition, it is the center of the Iloilo–Guimaras Metropolitan Area, as well as the regional center and primate city of the Western Visayas region. According to the 2020 census, Iloilo City has a population of 457,626 people. For the metropolitan area, the total population is 1,007,945 people.
On August 11, 2006, an oil spill occurred in Panay Gulf when the oil tanker, MT Solar 1, sank off the coasts of Guimaras and Negros in the Philippines, causing what is considered to be the worst oil spill in the country's history.

McLain Airstrip, also known as Guimaras Airstrip or Guimaras Airport, is an airstrip located at Brgy. McLain, Buenavista, Guimaras. Envisioned as the future unified international airport for the cities of Bacolod and Iloilo by former Guimaras Gov. Emily R. Lopez, the project was mothballed mainly because of the opening of the international airports in Cabatuan, Iloilo, serving Iloilo City, and Silay City, serving Bacolod City, and when Gov. Lopez retired from politics in 2004.
