Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali (IISER Mohali) is an autonomous public research university established in 2007 at Mohali, Punjab, India. It is one of the seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), established by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, to research in frontier areas of science and to provide science education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. It was established after IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. Institute focuses on pure research as well as interdisciplinary research in various fields of science.

History

The institute was approved by The Planning Commission in New Delhi in July 2006 and land was provided by The Punjab State government. [4] The foundation stone of IISER Mohali was laid on 27 September 2006 by the former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. [5] The Computing Facility of IISER Mohali was inaugurated on 3 September 2007 by T. Ramasami (Secretary, Department of Science and Technology). [6] The Earth-breaking ceremony for IISER boundary wall was held on 29 December 2008 at the proposed campus site in Knowledge City, Sector 81, S.A.S. Nagar. The ceremony was performed by N. Sathyamurthy, the founding director of the institute.

C.N.R. Rao inaugurated the Chemistry Research Laboratory on 8 April 2009. The Central Analytical Facility of IISER Mohali has been inaugurated in March 2010. Initially, the institute started its working from a transit campus in Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), Chandigarh. In March 2010, the institute started shifting to its permanent campus in The Knowledge City at Sector 81 with the opening of Central Analytical Facility (CAF) and completed the shifting in May 2013 by shutting operations in MGSIPAP complex, Sector 26, Chandigarh.

National Science Day celebrations

National Science Day celebrations on 28 February are a regular feature at IISER Mohali, every year. [27] Invitations are sent to schools in Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula and nearby areas. The focus of the day is on science and mathematics demonstrations prepared by IISER Mohali students and faculty members. A large number of schools send teams for inter-school competitions such as science quizzes, group discussions, treasure hunt, junkyard wars, poster presentation held on this day. Other non-competitive events such as documentary screening, anti-superstition demonstrations, etc. are also held. The day usually ends with a 'panel discussion' in which the school students ask science-related questions to a panel of faculty members of IISER Mohali. Since 2015, the Science Day celebrations have been shifted to 27 September, IISER Mohali's Foundation Day, as this date is more convenient for school students in the region.

Opportunity Cell

The Opportunity Cell was first proposed by the Student Representative Council, in October 2011 as a joint student-faculty body to provide guidance to students about research and job opportunities. In the year 2012−13, the opportunity cell established a summer research and internship programme with National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, Connexios Life sciences [28] and Lucid Software Limited (Lucid). It also organised various seminars such as "Alternative Careers in Science", "Research Opportunities at University of St Andrews" etc. Currently the cell disseminates information about summer research programmes, PhD positions and research oriented jobs. [29]

Magazine

Manthan, IISER Mohali's student magazine was revived in the summer of 2018 after a long gap. Six editions, along with a lockdown Life in Quarantine edition, have been published since its revival. [30]

Jayaraman Gowrishankar is an Indian medical microbiologist. Gowrishankar received his M.B.B.S. degree from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He holds Doctor of philosophy in bacterial genetics from the University of Melbourne.

Somdatta Sinha is an Indian researcher and professor of biology, who is one of the earliest to start working in the area of theoretical biology in India. Her expertise is in the interdisciplinary fields of mathematical & computational biology, nonlinear dynamics and complex systems with a view to understand the logic and design of biological processes. She studies spatio-temporal organization in biological systems – from biological sequences to spread of disease in populations – using mathematical and computational methods. She has played a central role in the development of mathematical and computational biology in her country through research, organization of scientific meetings, training programs, conferences, and teaching interdisciplinary courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research encompasses patterns, interactions, and dynamics of biological systems using mathematical and physical methods to understand complex multi-scale biological systems. Sinha's research contributions focus on modelling a variety of biological systems, such as, circadian rhythms, pattern formation, biochemical pathways, synthetic biology, single and meta-population ecological models, epidemiology, and controlling spatiotemporal dynamics. She has also carried out computational analysis of genomes for classification of organisms using Chaos Game Representation (CGR) and Multi-fractal analysis, protein structure function analysis using graph theory, and network analysis of large biochemical pathways. Her publications have made important contributions in the respective fields and are highly cited. Her seminal contribution to the development of the interdisciplinary field of Mathematical and Computational Biology in India was acknowledged by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India with the National Senior Woman Bioscientist Award in 2013 and the J C Bose National Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. She is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences. She was elected Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin for 2000-2001 and International Visiting Research Scholar at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2018. She has traveled widely across the globe and has given many invitational talks in universities and conferences.

Chandrima Shaha is an Indian biologist. As of September 2021, she is the J. C. Bose Chair Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata. She is the former Director and former Professor of Eminence at the National Institute of Immunology. She was the President of Indian National Science Academy (2020–22) and the Vice President of the same academy (2016–2018). She is an elected fellow of the World Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences and the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology.

Kausik Chattopadhyay is an Indian structural biologist, protein biologist, and a professor at the Department of Biological Sciences. He was the Dean of R&D at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali until May 2021. He is known for his studies on the Pore-forming protein toxins and T-cell costimulatory molecules. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2014.

Chokkanathapuram Venkataraman Sundaram was an Indian chemical metallurgist, best known for the commissioning of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor at Kalpakkam. He was the director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). He was a recipient of the Sanjay Gandhi Award for Science and Technology as well as the National Metallurgists Day Award and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1986.

Thomas John Pucadyil is an Indian molecular biologist, biochemist and a professor and chair of biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Known for his studies on membrane biochemistry and vesicular transport, Pucadyil is an international research scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a senior fellow of the Wellcome Trust- Department of Biotechnology. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biological sciences in 2018.

Rahul Banerjee is a Bengali Indian organic chemist and a professor at the department of chemical sciences of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. Banerjee, a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is known for his studies in the field of Metal–organic framework designing. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to chemical sciences in 2018. Currently he is one of the associate editor of international peer-review journal Journal of the American Chemical Society.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">K N Ganesh</span>

Krishnarajanagar Nagappa Ganesh is an Indian bio-organic chemist and served as the (founding) director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Tirupati since 2017 till 2023. He is also the founding director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, that was established in 2006 and served the office till 2017. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in chemical sciences (1998) for "his outstanding contribution towards the understanding of the chemical principles of DNA molecular recognition and for his work on various facets of DNA structure and its interaction with drugs and proteins". He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy since 2000.
