Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER Pune) is an autonomous public university established in 2006. It is one of the seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, and was one of the first IISERs to be established along with IISER Kolkata. [4] It is located in the city of Pune, India.

The construction of the final campus was completed in 2012. [5] [6] The campus is of 98 acres.

Academic programmes

IISER Pune offers integrated masters programmes (BS-MS), a Masters by Research (MS), an integrated doctoral programme (Int. PhD) and a doctoral programme (PhD).

Admission to the master's degree is through the IISER joint admission process which provides three channels for admission: Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced and state and central boards candidates, which require an additional IISER Aptitude Test. [7] Admission to the various PhD programmes is either with a master's degree in science or with a bachelor's degree, for the integrated PhD programme. Candidates are screened by interviews. [8] In addition to that candidates should have qualified a national level entrance exam for PhD program in science (like GATE)

The faculty is organised by various disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Climate Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged across disciplines. [9] The first batch of students graduated in 2012. [10]

In the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, IISER Pune is ranked among the top 800 globally and ranked 10 in India. [12]

Student life

The majority of the student activities at IISER-P are conducted by various clubs. [16]

Mimamsa is an intercollegiate science challenge conducted by the students of IISER-P. The aim of the organizers is to make it the most conceptually challenging competition at the national level for science students. It is a two-stage affair. The first stage is a written exam with 60 subjective questions from all disciplines of science. The top four colleges selected through this round move into the finals.

There is also a very active SPIC MACAY sub-chapter, which organizes events jointly with National Chemical Laboratory, and the SPIC MACAY Pune Chapter.

In the last week of October or first week of November, IISER Pune organises its college fest, Karavaan. The fest attracts students from colleges all across Pune, as well as national institutes all over India. [17]

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) are group of prestigious autonomous institutions for teaching and research in natural science established by the Government of India through the Ministry of Education to provide collegiate education in Basic Sciences integrated with research at the undergraduate level. The institutes were formally established by the Parliament of India through the Science Education and Research (Amendment) Act, 2010. Seven IISERs have been established across the country, namely IISER Pune in Maharashtra, IISER Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, IISER Mohali in Punjab, IISER Kolkata in West Bengal, IISER Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, IISER Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, and IISER Berhampur in Odisha. All IISERs were declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India in 2012, to promote them as leading institutions in the country in the field of basic sciences along with its sister institutes like Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The financial outlay for each IISER is around 5 billion (US$63 million) for the first five years of establishment.

Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships are available for any students for doctoral study at St John's College at the University of Cambridge and for undergraduate studies at the university. The Scholarships are named in honor of Manmohan Singh, a former Prime Minister of India and a renowned economist. Singh graduated from St John's College with a First in Economics in 1957, went on to earn a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1962, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Cambridge in 2006.

Karavaan is the annual socio-cultural science fest of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. The name stems from the notion of all IISERs moving forward as one. The fest attracts students from colleges all across Pune, as well as national institutes all over India. It is a 3-day fest, held either in October or November in the Fall semester every year.

Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati is an autonomous engineering and technology education institute located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Initially mentored by IIT Madras, now IIT Tirupati, the fastest growing 3rd generation IIT is located in Yerpedu, Tirupati, and has a size of 539 acres, including a proposed research park. The test is utilised by various Indian public research institutes to shortlist candidates for admission to PhD and Integrated PhD programmes with fellowships in theoretical computer science and areas in physics. JEST has been recognised as a National Eligibility Test (NET) by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB).

Dr.Krishnarajanagar Nagappa Ganesh is an Indian Bio-Organic chemist and served as the (founding) director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Tirupati since 2017 till 2023. He is also the founding Director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, that was established in 2006 and served the office till 2017. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in chemical sciences (1998) for "his outstanding contribution towards the understanding of the chemical principles of DNA molecular recognition and for his work on various facets of DNA structure and its interaction with drugs and proteins". He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy since 2000.
