The BB301 is a class of 50 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Krupp and Krauss-Maffei in West Germany for the then Indonesian State Railway (PNKA). The locomotive first entered service in 1964.
The locomotive has a length of 11,770 mm (12 yd 2 ft 7 in ), width of 2,800 mm (3 yd 0 ft 2 in ), and height of 3,660 mm (4 yd 0 ft 0 in ). It has empty weight of 48 tonnes (47 long tons ; 53 short tons ) and operational weight of 52 tonnes (51 long tons ; 57 short tons ). Its maximum speed is 120 km/h (33 m/s). The earlier BB301 class number 01–45 was powered by a Maybach Mercedes-Benz 836B diesel engine, while the latter number 51–55 was powered by MTU MD 12V 538 TB10, with both engines producing power output of 1,480 hp (1,100 kW). [1] In 1975, the earlier units' Maybach engines were replaced with the same MTU engines as the latter batch. [2] This locomotive has a B′B′ axle, meaning that it has two bogies, each of which has two axles. This locomotive was used to haul passenger trains or freight trains, and later was only used for shunting duties. This locomotive has double cabs configuration. [1]
The BB301 and the later BB304 class is the Indonesian variants of the Krupp M1500BB locomotive series operated by numerous countries.
Aside from the different engine, there are other dissimilarities between earlier BB301 01–45 and latter 51–55. All BB301 except BB301 51-55 does not have a window at the driver's cab doors and all BB301 have radiator nets in the shape of two upright rectangles. [3]
The locomotives were manufactured by a joint-venture between two West German manufacturers, with the BB301 01–30 and 51–55 built by Krupp, while BB301 31–45 were built by Krauss-Maffei. [4] The gap in numbering were due to differences in specification between the 1964–1965 batch and 1970 batch. [3] The BB 301 class started to enter service in 1964 with the first 10 units, then 35 units in 1965, and the remaining 5 units in 1970, bringing the total to 50 units. [2]
This locomotive has its golden era during the decades from 1964 to 1995 because of it was usually assigned to haul prestigious express trains on Java. The express trains operating at that time were Parahyangan , Bintang Sendja , Djaja , Bandung Express, Bima , Purbaya , and Tumapel . [2] BB301 was the main locomotive for hauling trains on the mainlines of Java Island, both the North line (Jakarta-Cirebon-Semarang-Surabaya) and South line (Jakarta-Bandung-Yogyakarta-Surabaya) during 1970–1980s. Some of the BB301 units were given the repower program in 1984 and 1998 to extend their service life. [2]
With the widespread introduction of diesel-electric locomotives in the 1980s–1990s, by the 2000s remaining BB301 units were relegated to servicing the branch lines or short-distance trains. [1] Two BB301 locomotives were later transferred to North Sumatra. They usually hauled tanker wagons containing fuel oil or palm oil on the Medan-Rantauprapat route. [1] Due to lack of spare parts, there were only 14 units fit for service by 2010. [2] The number of operational BB301 were diminishing over the years and most were dumped or scrapped. [5]
BB301 26 (new number BB301 65 08) is preserved as a monument at the Indonesian Railway Polytechnic campus in Madiun, East Java. It was inaugurated on 17 September 2021. [6]
One of the driver's cab of BB301 33 is preserved at BPTT Darman Prasetyo training facility in Yogyakarta. The locomotive itself was written off after it collided with a semi-trailer truck in 1973. The intact cabin was chopped off and were used as a training simulator for some time. [7]
In the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives by wheel arrangement, a 2-8-8-0 is a locomotive with a two-wheel leading truck, two sets of eight driving wheels, and no trailing truck.
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives by wheel arrangement, 2-6-6-0 is a locomotive with one pair of unpowered leading wheels, followed by two sets of three pairs of powered driving wheels and no trailing wheels. The wheel arrangement was principally used on Mallet-type articulated locomotives. Some tank locomotive examples were also built, for which various suffixes to indicate the type of tank would be added to the wheel arrangement, for example 2-6-6-0T for an engine with side-tanks.

Indonesia has finalized its plan for a national railway network recently. According to the plan, 3,200 km of train tracks that will criss-cross the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, it has been touted as the most extensive railway project in Indonesia since its independence from the Dutch in 1945. Indonesia targets to extend the national railway network to 10,524 kilometres by 2030. As of September 2022, the network spans 7,032 km.
The British Rail Class 35 is a class of mixed-traffic B-B diesel locomotive with hydraulic transmission. Because of their Mekydro-design hydraulic transmission units, the locomotives became known as the Hymeks. They were numbered D7000-D7100.

The DF4 is a type of diesel-electric locomotive used in the People's Republic of China. It has been in production since 1969 and is still produced as of 2007 by several local companies. It is the most common locomotive in China and is used for both passenger and freight services.
NSB Di 2 was a class of 54 diesel-hydraulic locomotives operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB). Six units were built by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK) of Kiel, Germany, and the remaining by Thune in Oslo. The locomotives were used for shunting and for local and light freight trains throughout NSBs network. Based on MaK's 575C design, the locomotives were 10.0 meters long and had a C wheel arrangement.
The Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 is a road switcher diesel-hydraulic locomotive, built between 1961 and 1969 by German manufacturer Krauss-Maffei in Munich, Germany. It generated 3,540 horsepower (2,640 kW) from two Maybach V16 engines. 37 examples were built for two North American railroads and one South American railroad.

Jombang Station (JG) is a large class type C railway station located in Jombatan, Jombang, Jombang Regency, the station is included in the Operation Area VII Madiun at an altitude of +43 m. The location of this station is right across the Alun-alun Jombang. All trains passing the Kertosono-Surabaya Gubeng must stop at this station.
The INKA CC300, also known in the Philippines as the PNR 9000 Class, is a multipurpose Diesel-hydraulic locomotive owned by Directorate General of Railways and built by Indonesian state-owned rolling stock manufacturer PT INKA. Launched in 2013, it is the first railway locomotive wholly produced by Indonesia and the first locomotive exported by Indonesia to another country, when the Philippine National Railways (PNR) received its first set of INKA CC300 locomotives in December 2020.
The BB302 is a class of diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Henschel in West Germany for the Indonesian State Railway (PNKA) and entered service in 1970. All units of BB302 class were allocated to North Sumatra.
The CC50 locomotive is an articulated Mallet type steam locomotive previously owned by the Staatsspoorwegen railway company. This locomotive was produced by the Werkspoor factory, Netherlands and Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), Switzerland. This locomotive has an axle arrangement (1C')C' (2-6-6-0).
