Jonathan Michael Caine,Baron Caine (born 1966) is a British Member of the House of Lords and a former political aide (or "SPAD") who served six Secretaries of State.
Caine grew up in Leeds in the 1970s,and was educated at Templenewsam Halton Primary and Halton Middle School,then Temple Moor High School. [2] He studied history at the University of Leicester,where his specialism was the Conservative Party 1902-1940 which included the Home Rule Crisis 1912-14 and the Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921. [2]
He joined the Conservative Research Department (CRD) in 1987,working in the office next to David Cameron's. [2] He joined the party's Northern Ireland desk in 1988,and by 1991 was a special adviser at the Northern Ireland Office until 1995 –rejoining it in 2010. [2]
In 2008,Caine stated that he was a Director at Bell Pottinger Public Affairs. [3]
In 2014,Caine worked as special adviser to Theresa Villiers,being described in the press as her "right-hand man". [2] Caine had also worked for Owen Paterson,and was described by him as "one of the foremost experts on Northern Ireland". However,a senior member of the SDLP noted that,although he understood Unionism in Ireland,he had no real understanding of Irish republicanism,and no sympathy for it. [2]
As of 2016 [update] ,Caine had worked for Tom King,Peter Brooke,Patrick Mayhew,Owen Paterson,Theresa Villiers and James Brokenshire. [2] [4]
Jonathan Caine has been described as "one of the most quietly brilliant Westminster strategists,whose knowledge of Northern Ireland is formidable." [5] In his memoir,For The Record,former Prime Minister David Cameron is quoted in The Yorkshire Post as crediting Caine with being "an authority in his field and a tireless behind-the-scenes presence. He was –and remains –passionate about securing peace... in Northern Ireland,and maintaining our United Kingdom." [6]
He was nominated for a life peerage as part of David Cameron's Resignation Honours list and was created Baron Caine,of Temple Newsam in the City of Leeds,on 2 September 2016. [7] [8]
On 5 November 2021,Caine was appointed as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office. [9] On 24 November 2022,he was appointed as a whip (Lord-in-waiting) in addition to his role the NIO.
Caine supports Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos,and enjoys listening to Led Zeppelin. [2] He was a longstanding friend of David Trimble. [3] He is unmarried.
Owen William Paterson is a British former politician and unregistered lobbyist who served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2010 to 2012 and Secretary of State for Environment,Food and Rural Affairs from 2012 to 2014 under Prime Minister David Cameron. A member of the Conservative Party,he served as Member of Parliament (MP) for North Shropshire from 1997 until his resignation in 2021. Paterson was also the President of the Northern Ireland Conservatives.
Theresa Anne Villiers is a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chipping Barnet from 2005 to 2024,having previously served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005. A member of the Conservative Party,Villiers was Minister of State for Rail and Aviation from 2010 to 2012,Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2012 to 2016 and Secretary of State for Environment,Food and Rural Affairs from 2019 to 2020.
James Peter Brokenshire was a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party,he served in Theresa May's cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2016 to 2018 and then as Secretary of State for Housing,Communities and Local Government from 2018 to 2019. He also served as a minister at the Home Office under David Cameron and Boris Johnson. Brokenshire was Member of Parliament (MP) for Hornchurch from 2005 to 2010,and for Old Bexley and Sidcup from 2010 until his death in 2021.
Stewart James Jackson,Baron Jackson of Peterborough is a British politician and adviser. Jackson served as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Peterborough from 2005 to 2017. After being ousted by Labour's Fiona Onasanya at the 2017 general election,he served as Chief of Staff,and Special Adviser to David Davis,Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union,until July 2018 when Davis resigned his position. He was made a member of the House of Lords as a life peer in November 2022.
Shailesh Lakhman Vara is a Ugandan-British Conservative former politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for North West Cambridgeshire from 2005 until he lost his seat in 2024. He also served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from July to September 2022.
Sayeeda Hussain Warsi,Baroness Warsi,is a British lawyer,politician,and member of the House of Lords who served as co-chairwoman of the Conservative Party from 2010 to 2012. She served in the Cameron–Clegg coalition,first as the Minister without portfolio between 2010 and 2012,then as the Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as the Minister of State for Faith and Communities,until her resignation citing her disagreement with the Government's policy relating to the Israel–Gaza conflict in August 2014.
Sir Julian Richard Smith,is a British Conservative politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Skipton and Ripon since 2010. He served as Government Chief Whip from 2017 to 2019 and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2019 to 2020.
Sir Alec Edward Shelbrooke is a British Conservative politician who has been Member of Parliament for Wetherby and Easingwold since 2024 and for Elmet and Rothwell between 2010 and 2024. He served as Minister of State for Defence Procurement in the Truss ministry from September to October 2022.
Natalie Jessica Evans,Baroness Evans of Bowes Park,,is a British politician and member of the House of Lords. A member of the Conservative Party,she was made a life peer in 2014 and from 2016 to 2022 was Leader of the House of Lords. She was the first Leader of the House of Lords to serve under two different prime ministers since Lord Shepherd in 1974,and the longest serving Lords leader since 1951.
The 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly election was held on Thursday,2 March 2017. The election was held to elect members (MLAs) following the resignation of deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in protest over the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal. McGuinness' position was not filled,and thus by law his resignation triggered an election.
Kevin Paul Hollinrake is a British Conservative Party politician and businessman who has served as Shadow Secretary of State for Business and Trade since July 2024. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Thirsk and Malton since May 2015 and previously served as Minister of State for Enterprise,Markets and Small Business from 2022 to 2024.

The 2016 Conservative Party leadership election was held due to Prime Minister David Cameron's resignation as party leader. He had resigned after losing the national referendum to leave the European Union. Cameron,who supported Britain's continued membership of the EU,announced his resignation on 24 June,saying that he would step down by October. Theresa May won the contest on 11 July 2016,after the withdrawal of Andrea Leadsom left her as the sole candidate.
British prime minister David Cameron reshuffled the Conservative members of his coalition government on 15 July 2014. The reshuffle,intended to strengthen his party's position in advance of the 2015 general election,had been long anticipated,as Cameron had maintained an unusually high level of stability amongst the senior ranks of his government,with only one prior reshuffle of significance,and many ministers having remained in place since their election in 2010. The reshuffle also featured the appointment of a new European Commissioner representing the United Kingdom,as the term of Lady Ashton was set to expire later in 2014.

The 2016 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours are honours awarded following the July 2016 resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron. The life peerages and other honours were issued as two separate lists by the Cabinet Office on 4 August 2016 and all honours were gazetted as one list on 16 August 2016. This was the first Prime Minister's Resignation Honours since 1997.

The Conservative Friends of India is linked to the Conservative Party in the UK,and is a membership organisation which engages with the British Indian community and played a significant role in the Conservative campaign in the 2019 general election,as well as supporting the development of stronger India–United Kingdom relations. It actively campaigns for the Conservative Party in the British Indian community. The organisation was also responsible for releasing Hindi campaign songs for the Conservative Party in recent elections supporting David Cameron,Theresa May and Zac Goldsmith.
