Kalat Division or Qalat Division is an administrative division of Balochistan Province of Pakistan. [1] Its capital city is Khuzdar founded on 14 October 1955. CNIC Code of Kalat Division is 51. According to 2023 Pakistani census population of Kalat Division is 2,719,964 (2.7 million).

History

Kalat Division was established after the dissolution of the Balochistan state union on 14 October 1955. When the Baluchistan States Union became Kalat Division, Khuzdar was established as the divisional headquarters. At the time of its establishment, the division had four districts (04) Kalat, Makran, Lasbela, and Kharan district.

In 1960, Lasbela district transferred to form Karachi-Bela division. On 1 July 1971, Makran district separates from Kalat Division to form a separate division. In 1972, Lasbela district again become a part of Kalat division. In 1974, a new district Khuzdar created from Kalat district and added in Kalat Division.

In 1991, Mastung district spelt from Kalat district territory included in Kalat Division. In 1992, Awaran district split from khuzdar district and added in Kalat Division.

In 2007, Washuk district created from Kharan district territory and added in Kalat Division.

On 17 May 2015, Kharan and Washuk district shifted from Kalat Division to newly established Rakhshan Division. In 2017, Surab district created from Kalat district territory included in Kalat Division.

Recently, in 2022, Hub district split from Lasbela district and added in Kalat division.

At that time Khuzdar and Mastung districts were sub-divisions of Kalat. Khuzdar became a separate district by notification of 1 March 1974, while Mastung was announced as a separate district on 18 February 1992. The district draws its name from the ancient city of Kalat. The old name of the district headquarters was Kahan. The current district consists of two sub-divisions, i.e. Kalat and Manguchar, four tehsils: Kalat Mangochar, Johan, and Gazgz, 81 Patwar circles and 614 mauza (villages).

Khuzdar is a city in the administrative headquarter of Khuzdar District in the central part of the Balochistan province of Pakistan. Khuzdar is the 3rd-largest city of the Balochistan province and the 48th-largest city of Pakistan by population, according to the 2017 census. Historically, Khuzdar was the main city and capital of the Jhalawan province of the Khanate of Kalat. From October 1952 to 1955, it became part of the Balochistan States Union. In 1955, Khuzdar became the capital of the newly formed Kalat Division before it became a district of its own in 1974.Gresha is the sub tehsil of khuzdar District and its almost 80Km from khuzdar city. As of 2017, it is the largest Brahui-speaking city.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Baluchistan States Union</span> Former administrative division of Pakistan (1952–1955)

The Baluchistan States Union or Balochistan States Union (BSU) was an administrative division of Pakistan that existed between 3 October 1952 and 14 October 1955 in the southwestern part of West Pakistan. It was formed by the four princely states of Kalat, Kharan, Las Bela and Makran with the capital at the town of Kalat. The area of the Union was roughly the south-western half of the modern province of Balochistan. The Union was separate from the Chief Commissioners Province of Baluchistan which comprised areas to the northeast of the Union. The Union did not include the enclave of Gwadar which was part of the Muscat and Oman. The four state rulers continued in office and retained autonomy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Las Bela (princely state)</span> Princely state of British India and later Pakistan

Las Bela was a princely state in a subsidiary alliance with British India which existed until 1955. The state occupied an area of 18,254 km2 (7,048 sq mi) in the extreme southeast of the Balochistan region, with an extensive coastline on the Arabian Sea to the south. Las Bela was bordered by the princely states of Kalat and Makran to the north and west. To the east lay the province of Sind and to the southeast lay the Federal Capital Territory around the city of Karachi.

Makran was an autonomous princely state in a subsidiary alliance with British India until 1947, before being absorbed as an autonomous princely state of Pakistan. It ceased to exist in 1955. It was located in the extreme southwest of present-day Pakistan, an area now parts of the districts of Gwadar, Kech and Panjgur. The state did not include the enclave of Omani Gwadar, which was under Omani rule until 1958.

Wadhela is a Baloch tribe inhabiting the Makran division of Balochistan. They are one of the principal tribes in the Kulanch sub-tehsil of Pasni city in Gwadar. Wadhelas are originally said to be immigrants from the Wadh tehsil of Khuzdar district. They also inhabit the Kech district of Balochistan, where they were largely responsible for the '1898 Baloch uprising' of Gokprosh.
