King's Wood is a 31.7 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Corby in Northamptonshire. [1] [2] [3] It managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
It is a remnant of the former royal hunting forest, Rockingham Forest. [9] [10] More than 250 plant species have been recorded, including ones characteristic of ancient woods including yellow archangel and wood anemone. There are diverse invertebrates such as green-veined white butterflies and common blue damselflies, and birds include treecreepers, long-tailed tits, green woodpeckers and tawny owls. [1] [4]
Access points include one at the junction of Danesholme Road and Gainsborough Road. [1]
The once celebrated forest of Rockingham...is now represented by detached woods, more or less extensive...Of these, King's Wood and the various coppices still remaining on the east of the road between Great Oakley and Rockingham will perhaps furnish the tourist with the best illustration of what much of the forest district used to be—open, picturesque glades, with, at intervals, land covered with timber trees, and a thick undergrowth.
