Kuttichira or Thekkepuram is a quarter located inside the city of Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala. [1] Its approximate boundaries are the Arabian Sea on the West, the Kallai river on the South, Vellayil (a fishing village) on the North, and Kozhikode town on the East.

Tharavads and the Matriarchal System

Several tharavads within Thekkepuram boast a rich history, spanning centuries, and are designed with approximately 40 bedrooms to accommodate the extended family members who prefer residing together. The values and traditions of the joint family system continue to thrive within the tharavads of Thekkepuram.

These families adhere to the matriarchal system, wherein the lineage is traced through the daughters. The tharavads in this region serve as exemplary instances of Kerala architecture, featuring characteristic elements such as slanting tiled roofs, inner courtyards, wooden folding windows, benches, and wells. [2]

Tharavad, also spelled as Tharavadu (തറവാട്), is the Malayalam word for the ancestral home of aristocratic Nair families in Kerala, which usually served as the common residence for the matrilineal joint family under the Marumakkathayam system practiced in the state,. German linguist Hermann Gundert, in his Malayalam—English dictionary published in 1872, defines a Tharavadu as, "An ancestral residence of land-owners and kings", and also as, "A house, chiefly of noblemen". By extension, the word refers not just to the family's house but to the extended family that shares that house. It was classically the residence of Jenmimar, but contemporary usage of the word is now more generic to all social classes and religions in Kerala. Heads of tharavadus - usually the eldest living male - were known as Karnavars, and junior members as Anandravans.

Manjalur is a village with a lot of tradition in the district of Palakkad in Kerala, India. It belongs to the Thenkurissy panchayat. Remarked by the tradition and the popular folk ritual kanyarkali. Manjalur Samudiri palace now demolished was the venue for holding Krishnattam kali. Manjalur was the only place in the world to hold this 10 day ballet of Krishnas life, with the exception of Guruvayur temple. Kaankku Veedu Family was the de facto rulers of this area.

Ezhikkara is a panchayat in Paravur Taluk of Ernakulam District, Kerala. The North Paravur, Chathanad road (9 km) passes through this village. Ezhikkara is situated close to Ernakulam. Ezhikkara is famous for its pokkali fields and prawn farms.

Kozhikode Beach or Calicut Beach is a beach on the western side of Kozhikode, situated on the Malabar Coast of India. The beach is accessible through four road overbridges in the city. The beach has paved stones and illumination. There is one Lions Park for the children and an aquarium. Kozhikode beach has always been a prominent place for conducting public meetings. The beach road was renamed 'Gandhi Road' in 1934 after Gandhi visited Calicut in 1934.

Kozhikode has been a multi-ethnic and multi-religious town since the early medieval period. The Hindus forms the largest religious group, followed by Muslims and Christians. Hindus form the majority at 57.7% with 315807 members of the total population. Muslims form 37.6% with 207298 members of the total population.

The Fort Kochi region of Kochi city also historically belongs to South Malabar.
