Sierra Nevada National Park is a national park located in the Sierra Nevada within the provinces of Granada and Almería, in Spain. It was declared a national park on 14 January 1999. It stretches from the Alpujarra to El Marquesado and the Lecrín Valley, covering a total area of 85,883 hectares, making it the largest national park in Spain until the expansion of the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park from 10,021 to 90,800 hectares in 2019.

Las Gabias includes the localities of "Gabia Grande", the municipal capital, and "Gabia Chica" that were a unified with the region in 1973, in addition to the annexation of Híjar, Los Llanos, Pedro Verde and San Javier. The name may have originated from Hisn Caviar, which means "military tower", in allusion to the one that still exists in Gabia Grande. It is one of the most populous municipalities in Spain as well as one of the youngest, with the median age of inhabitants being only 34.3 years of age. In 2016, the population of Las Gabias surpassed 20,000, making it the third most populous municipality in the Granada Metropolitan Area, surpassed only by Granada and Armilla.

Polopos is a village in the municipality Polopos-La Mamola in the province of Granada, Spain. As of 2010, the municipality has a population of 1856 inhabitants, most of which live in the coastal village La Mamola. Polopos used to be the main village with 1200 villagers living there in the 18th and 19th century. Most of the families moved away in the second half of the 20th century to find work in the cities or to live on the coast. As of 2019 it was home to 53 people.
