The Liggett Building, also referred to as the Fourth & Pike Building, is a historic 10-story office building at 1424 4th Avenue in downtown Seattle, Washington. [2] It was built in 1927 by the Louis K. Liggett Company, leasing the property from the estate of local pioneer George Kinnear, to house the first Seattle location of their national drug store chain. Liggett's would break their 99-year lease on the building only a few years later after having opened a second location only a block away proved financially unwise during the Great Depression. The building received its current name after a 1933 renovation. [3] Designed by Lawton & Moldenhour in the Gothic revival style, it is clad entirely in locally manufactured terracotta. It is an official Seattle City Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 31, 2011.
The site of the Liggett Building was historically owned by Seattle pioneer Captain George Kinnear (1836–1912). In the years immediately after the Great Seattle Fire the predominantly residential Pike Street corridor was rapidly transformed into a major commercial arterial lined with denser tenement houses and hotels. Kinnear's lot, previously occupied by several small workingman's cottages by 1893 was packed with a collection of wood-frame shops and lodging houses. In response to the northward expansion of Seattle's business district spurned on by the Yukon Gold Rush, in 1905 he commissioned architects Graham & Myers to design a $30,000 two-story brick commercial building in the Renaissance Revival style to fill the property. [4] This building would soon be dwarfed by surrounding high-rise development. Following Kinnear's death the building and all his other properties would be taken over by the George Kinnear Company, formed by his estate in 1921. [5]
In early 1926 after an exhaustive search for a site that provided "in the highest degree present and permanent centrality with respect to Seattle's business district", [6] the Louis K. Liggett Company, a division of United Drug Stores (later known as Rexall), signed a 99-year lease on the property from the George Kinnear Company through the Goodwin Real Estate Company. Through Goodwin they commissioned local architects Lawton & Moldenhour (successor to Saunders & Lawton) to design a ten-story Gothic Revival Skyscraper of concrete reinforced steel and clad in terracotta to replace the 1905 Kinnear Building, then mostly occupied by the Tailored Ready Co,, one of Seattle's largest clothing stores at the time. Liggett's would occupy the largest of 6 retail spaces on the ground floor, their first store in Seattle and 380th in the chain overall. The upper floors were class-A office space to let, with the design allowing for 5 more floors to be added if needed. All labor and materials used on the building were locally sourced; Builders Murdock & Eckman were awarded the $600,000 contract and Steel & Phelps took care of the heating, plumbing and electric work. [5] The terracotta was manufactured by Gladding, McBean & Co. at their branch plant in Renton. [7]
Demolition of the Kinnear Building began in September 1926. [8] Structural work, with steel provided by the Pacific Coast Steel Company, was largely complete by March 1927 and the building was ready for occupancy by July 1. [9] Among its early tenants was the offices of both the Goodwin Company and contractors Murdock & Eckman, as well as prominent residential architects J. Lister Holmes and William J. Bain. [10] Joining Liggett's on the ground floor were Ed Oliver's clothing store on Pike [11] and Clement B. Coffin Jewelry on 4th [12] and later a branch of Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakeries. [13] The entire second floor, also designed for retail space, was occupied by national men's clothing chain Tilton's beginning in 1929. [14] Upon completion the building was hailed as a monument to commercial stability and demonstrated the confidence that Eastern capitalists had in the city. [6]
Towards the end of 1927 Liggett's would open a second store only a block away in the newly completed Republic Building, whose construction most of the same firms were involved in. [15] Owing to their close proximity and the growing effects of the Great Depression, they would quietly shutter the store in their namesake building in the early 1930s, the space being taken up by Kings discount clothing store. In 1933 the building underwent a $50,000 interior remodeling by architect Earl Morrison, refitting the 7th, 8th and 9th floors for medical and dental offices and officially changing the building's name to the Fourth and Pike Building. [16] Litigation surrounding the building in the mid-1930s would leave many tenants in the lurch, delaying lease renewals and forcing largest retail tenant Tilton's to move out. [17] Their space and the former Liggett's space would be leased to Los Angeles-based men's clothier Foreman & Clark; their first Seattle store where they would remain for several decades. [18] Ben Bridge Jeweler, opened at 405 Pike Street in 1928, would eventually take over most of the ground floor and would become one of the Northwest's largest jewelry store chains. [19] The Ben Bridge clock, located outside the building on Pike Street, is separately listed as a Seattle Landmark as well.
The building would retain much of its character throughout the years, with only the ground floor seeing numerous remodels for its various tenants. In 1945 the building was purchased from the Kinnear Company by Peoples National Bank who would sell it to 4th & Pike Street Corp. in 1950. The building has been owned by various corporations and LLCs with variations of the building's name ever since. [20]
Everett Mall is a 673,000-square-foot (62,500 m2) indoor/outdoor shopping mall located in Everett, Washington, United States. Planned in the late 1960s, the mall began with the construction of two anchor stores, Sears in 1969 and White Front in 1971; the mall was originally built and opened in 1974. It was plagued from the start of development: construction was stalled in 1972 due to the Boeing bust, and it suffered further misfortune with one anchor store closing before the rest of the mall could open. The mall also had a low tenant rate upon opening, only rebounding after The Bon Marché opened in 1977; the success led to the construction of an additional north wing to the mall anchored by the upscale Frederick & Nelson department store. In 2004, the mall underwent a massive expansion and renovation that included the addition of a 16-screen movie theater and outdoor stores along the south side. The mall's anchor stores are Regal Cinemas, LA Fitness, Burlington, Best Buy, PetSmart, TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Floor & Decor, Ulta Beauty, Party City, and Trader Joe's There are two vacant anchor stores that were the old location of Ulta, and Sears, which will become At Home in Late 2024.
Valu-Mart was a chain of discount stores founded in Seattle in 1958. Its parent company was Weisfield's Jewelers. For many years Weisfield's was a store that carried jewelry, as well as televisions, radios, stereos, and other consumer electronics products. Once Valu-Mart was put into place, Weisfield's strictly became a jewelry store. The chain also had stores in Oregon, where they originally were named Villa-Mart. Separate grocery sections in the stores featured curbside grocery pickup by placing the grocery bags into numbered bins that rolled onto a conveyor allowing the customer to drive up to the front of the store to pick them up by giving the attendant a plastic card with the numbered bin they used. The groceries were then loaded into the car usually by store employees.
U.S. Bank Center, formerly U.S. Bank Centre, is a 44-story skyscraper in Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington. The building opened as Pacific First Centre and was constructed from 1987 to 1989. At 607 feet (185 m), it is currently the eighth-tallest building in Seattle and was designed by Callison Architecture, who is also headquartered in the building. It contains 943,575 sq ft (87,661 m2) of office space.
3 East 57th Street, originally the L. P. Hollander Company Building, is a nine-story commercial building in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. It is along the northern side of 57th Street, just east of Fifth Avenue. 3 East 57th Street, constructed from 1929 to 1930, was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon in an early Art Deco style.
John Graham & Company, or John Graham & Associates was the name of an architectural firm, founded in 1900 in Seattle, Washington, by English-born architect John Graham (1873–1955), and maintained by his son John Graham Jr. (1908–1991).
The Metropolitan Building, in Los Angeles, California, was completed in 1913 and is one of a number of buildings built along Broadway in the early decades of the twentieth century for commercial and retail uses in what had then become the busiest and largest shopping district of the city. Located at the intersection of W. 5th Street and S. Broadway, the Metropolitan Building replaced a two-story, Romanesque Revival style building with storefronts on S. Broadway and W. 5th Street. This building was called the Mueller Building for its owner, Michail Mueller. The date of the building's construction is not known, nor has any additional information about it been located.
The Olympic Tower, originally known as the United Shopping Tower, then the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Building, and later, the Olympic Savings Tower, is a historic 12-story office tower located in Seattle, Washington and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally built in 1929 at the Southwest corner of Third Avenue and Pine Street for the United Pacific Corporation under the control of Seattle investment firm Drumheller, Ehrlichman and White. It was designed by Henry Bittman who also designed additions to the building in 1939.
The Holyoke Building is a historic building located in downtown Seattle, Washington. It is a substantial five story brick structure with stone trimmings. Construction began at the corner of First Avenue and Spring Streets just before the Great Seattle fire of 1889. Completed in early 1890, it was among the first permanent buildings completed and ready for occupancy in downtown Seattle following the fire. Today the Holyoke Building is one of the very few such buildings still standing in Seattle outside of the Pioneer Square district and is a historic remnant of the northward expansion of Seattle's business district between the time of the great fire and the Yukon Gold Rush in 1897.
The National Building is a historic warehouse building in downtown Seattle, Washington, located on the east side of Western Avenue between Spring and Madison Streets in what was historically Seattle's commission district. It is now home to the Seattle Weekly. It is a six-story plus basement brick building that covers the entire half-block. The dark red brick facade is simply decorated with piers capped with small Ionic capitals and a small cornice, which is a reproduction of the original cornice. Kingsley & Anderson of Seattle were the architects.
The Pacific Tower, formerly the Pacific Medical Center, is a 16-story building at 1200 12th Avenue South on Beacon Hill in Seattle, Washington, United States. It was completed in 1932 and opened the following year as a U.S. Public Health Service facility. The lower floors of the facility still function as a medical center today. Amazon.com occupied much of the building as its headquarters from 1999 until 2010. Much of the space was left vacant after Amazon relocated to South Lake Union. In 2013, the State of Washington agreed to a 30-year lease of 13 floors. Seattle Central College subleases six floors for its healthcare training program.
The Woodlark Building is a historic commercial building in downtown Portland, Oregon, United States that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The nine-story building was designed by Doyle, Patterson & Beach, and constructed in 1911–12. It has been described as "one of Portland's earliest commercial skyscrapers". From its completion until 1924, it was the headquarters of two jointly owned and very similarly named pharmaceutical companies based in Portland, the retail Woodard, Clarke & Company, and the wholesale Clarke-Woodward Company. It was converted into an office building in 1924. The retail space on the ground floor, mezzanine and basement has held a variety of businesses, in succession over the building's history, among the longest-lasting ones being a drugstore (1912–1927), a Sherman Clay piano and music store (1930–1974), and an independent shoe store (2000–2016).
The Barnes Building, originally known as the Odd Fellows' Block, the Masonic Temple from 1909 to 1915, and later Ingram Hall, is a historic fraternal and office building located at 2320-2322 1st Avenue in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Designed in early 1889 and constructed in late 1890 by Seattle Lodge No. 7 of the International Order of Odd Fellows and designed for use by all of the city's Odd Fellow lodges, it is the earliest known surviving work of Seattle architect William E. Boone and George Meeker and remains in an almost perfect state of preservation. The Barnes building has played an important role in the Belltown Community and Seattle's dance community. It was used by the Odd Fellows for 17 years before their departure to a newer, bigger hall in 1909 and was home to a variety of fraternal & secret societies throughout the early 20th century, with the Free and Accepted Masons being the primary tenant until their own Hall was built in 1915. The ground floor has been a host to a variety of tenants since 1890 ranging from furniture sales to dry goods to farm implement sales and sleeping bag manufacturing, most recently being home to several bars. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as The Barnes Building on February 24, 1975.
The Colonial Hotel is a historic building in Seattle located at 1119-1123 at the southwest corner of 1st Avenue and Seneca Streets in the city's central business district. The majority of the building recognizable today was constructed in 1901 over a previous building built in 1892-3 that was never completed to its full plans.
390 Fifth Avenue, also known as the Gorham Building, is an Italian Renaissance Revival palazzo-style building at Fifth Avenue and West 36th Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, United States. It was designed by McKim, Mead & White, with Stanford White as the partner in charge, and built in 1904–1906. The building was named for the Gorham Manufacturing Company, a major manufacturer of sterling and silverplate, and was a successor to the former Gorham Manufacturing Company Building at 889 Broadway. The building features bronze ornamentation and a copper cornice.
2 Park Avenue is a 28-story office building in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The structure, along the west side of Park Avenue between 32nd and 33rd Streets, was designed by Ely Jacques Kahn and was developed by Abe N. Adelson from 1926 to 1928. The building, known for its facade of brick and colored architectural terracotta, is a New York City designated landmark.
The Interurban Building, formerly known as the Seattle National Bank Building (1890–1899), the Pacific Block (1899–1930) and the Smith Tower Annex (1930–1977), is a historic office building located at Yesler Way and Occidental Way S in the Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, United States. Built from 1890 to 1891 for the then recently formed Seattle National Bank, it is one of the finest examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in the Pacific Northwest and has been cited by local architects as one of the most beautiful buildings in downtown Seattle. It was the breakthrough project of young architect John Parkinson, who would go on to design many notable buildings in the Los Angeles area in the late 19th and early 20th century.
689 Fifth Avenue is a commercial building in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, at the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 54th Street. The building was designed by Warren and Wetmore and constructed from 1925 to 1927.
The Mutual Life Building, originally known as the Yesler Building, is an historic office building located in Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood that anchors the West side of the square. The building sits on one of the most historic sites in the city; the original location of Henry Yesler's cookhouse that served his sawmill in the early 1850s and was one of Seattle's first community gathering spaces. It was also the site of the first sermon delivered and first lawsuit tried in King County. By the late 1880s Yesler had replaced the old shanties with several substantial brick buildings including the grand Yesler-Leary Building, which would all be destroyed by the Great Seattle Fire in 1889. The realignment of First Avenue to reconcile Seattle's clashing street grids immediately after the fire would split Yesler's corner into two pieces; the severed eastern corner would become part of Pioneer Square park, and on the western lot Yesler would begin construction of his eponymous block in 1890 to house the First National Bank, which had previously been located in the Yesler-Leary Building. Portland brewer Louis Feurer began construction of a conjoined building to the west of Yesler's at the same time. Progress of both would be stunted and the original plans of architect Elmer H. Fisher were dropped by the time construction resumed in 1892. It would take 4 phases and 4 different architects before the building reached its final form in 1905. The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York only owned the building from 1896 to 1909, but it would retain their name even after the company moved out in 1916.
1552 Broadway, also known as the I. Miller Building, is a commercial structure on Times Square in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Located at the northeast corner of Broadway and 46th Street, the building was designed by Louis H. Friedland, with sculptures by Alexander Stirling Calder. The current building, designed for shoe retailer I. Miller, dates to 1926 and was combined from two 19th-century brownstone residences on the site. It contains decorative elements from several styles.
1101 East Pike Street, originally known as the Seattle Automobile Company and later the Baker Linen Building is a historic building in Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington. Built in 1916 as the fourth and final location of the Seattle Automobile Company, the city's first auto dealer, the structure has been designated a city landmark.
