American male artistic gymnasts have competed at every Olympic Games since 1904, except for 1908, 1912, and 1980. [1] In total, there have been 223 American male gymnasts who have competed at the Olympics. [1]

History

Over 100 athletes competed at the 1904 Olympics, and American teams won the gold, silver, and bronze in the team all-around and a total of 30 medals across all of the events. [2] The United States returned to men's gymnastics at the 1920 Olympics, but did not win any medals. [3] At the 1924 Olympics, Frank Kriz won the gold medal on the vault. [4] At the 1932 Olympics, the men's team won the silver medal behind Italy. [5] The next medal by an American man was not won until 1976 when Peter Kormann won the bronze medal on the floor exercise. [6] At the 1984 Summer Olympics, the United States team won the gold medal. Additionally, the 1984 Olympic team won seven individual medals. [7] At the 1992 Olympics, Trent Dimas won the gold medal on the horizontal bar. [8] Then at the 1996 Summer Olympics, Jair Lynch won the silver medal on the parallel bars. [9] The men's team won the silver medal behind Japan at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Additionally, Paul Hamm won the gold medal in the all-around as well as the silver medal on the horizontal bar. [10] At the 2008 Olympics, the men's team won the bronze medal, and Jonathan Horton won the silver medal on the horizontal bar. [11] Danell Leyva won the bronze medal in the all-around at the 2012 Olympics. [12] Leyva also won the silver medal on the parallel bars and the horizontal bar at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Additionally, Alex Naddour won the bronze medal on the pommel horse. [13]

Olga Valentinovna Korbut is a retired Belarusian gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union. Nicknamed the "Sparrow from Minsk", she won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games, in which she competed in 1972 and 1976 for the Soviet team, and was the inaugural inductee to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1988.

George Louis Eyser was a German-American gymnast who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics, earning six medals in one day, including three gold and two silver medals. Eyser competed with a wooden prosthesis for a left leg, having lost his leg after being run over by a train. Despite his disability, he won gold in the vault, an event which then included a jump over a long horse without aid of a springboard.

Romeo Neri was an Italian gymnast. He won three gold medals at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, becoming, along with Helene Madison of United States, the most successful athlete there. He previously won a silver medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1934 he won a silver medal and a bronze medal at the world championships in Budapest.

Frank Josef Kriz was an American gymnast and Olympic champion. A member of the New York Sokol and the Bohemian Gymnastic Association, he competed in the 1920, 1924, and 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1924, he received a gold medal in vault. In 1922 and 1924, he won the Amateur Athletic Union national gymnastics title. In 1959, he was one of the initial inductees to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

He is also the 2011 US national all-around gold medalist and the 2011 world champion on the parallel bars. With a combined total of 8 Olympic and World Championships medals, Leyva is the second most decorated American male gymnast after Paul Hamm.

John Orozco is an American artistic gymnast who competed in the 2012 Olympics and is the 2012 U.S national champion. He was selected to the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team for the 2016 Olympic Games, but withdrew on July 15, 2016 due to an ACL injury. After graduating High School at 17, John trained for 7 years at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chris Brooks (gymnast)</span> American gymnast

Christopher Brooks is a retired American gymnast who represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He is now assistant coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks NCAA gymnastics team. He won four gold medals at the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships. He has trained alongside Olympic and World Championships medalist Jonathan Horton as a junior, college and senior elite gymnast. On August 17, 2017, he announced his retirement from artistic gymnastics.

Elsabeth Ann Black is a Canadian artistic gymnast. She is a three-time Olympian, having represented her country at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Games. She is the 2017 World all-around silver medalist, making her the first Canadian gymnast to win a world all-around medal, and she led the Canadian women's gymnastics team to a bronze medal in the 2022 World Championships team final, the first world team medal won by a Canadian gymnastics team. She won a silver medal on the balance beam at the 2022 World Championships. She is also the 2018 Commonwealth Games all-around champion, a two-time Pan American Games all-around champion, and a six-time Canadian national all-around champion. Samuel Anthony Mikulak is a retired American artistic gymnast. He is a six-time U.S. national all-around champion, the 2018 World bronze medalist on high bar, and a three-time Olympian. He is also an eight-time NCAA champion, winning the team, individual all-around and several individual event titles at the 2011, 2013 and 2014 NCAA Men's Gymnastics championships.

Brett Dallas McClure is a retired American gymnast. He won a bronze medal in the pommel horse at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, and later helped his U.S. gymnastics team earn a silver in the team competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. During his sporting career, McClure has collected two more silver medals in the same program at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. McClure is currently the High Performance Director with USA men's gymnastics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's horizontal bar</span> Olympic gymnastics event

The men's horizontal bar competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held at the HSBC Arena on 6 and 16 August. There were 71 competitors from 34 nations. The event was won by Fabian Hambüchen of Germany, the nation's first victory in the horizontal bar since 1996 and third overall. Danell Leyva won the United States' third silver medal in four Games in the event; Nile Wilson's bronze was Great Britain's first-ever medal in the horizontal bar.

Ronald S. Barak is an American gymnast. At the 1961 Maccabiah Games he won eight gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal. At the 1964 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships he won the all-around competition, the horizontal bars, and the parallel bars, and at the 1964 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Gymnastics Competition he was the champion in the horizontal bars. He competed in eight events at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brody Malone</span> American gymnast

John Brody Malone is an American artistic gymnast who represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He is the 2021 and 2022 U.S. National All-Around Champion. On horizontal bar, he is the 2021 World Championships bronze medalist and the 2022 World Champion. He is a ten-time NCAA National Champion.
