Gymnastics at the 1952 Summer Olympics was represented by 15 events: 7 for women and 8 for men. All events were held between 19 and 24 July in the Messuhalli building in Helsinki. Men's events were held in Exhibition Hall I while women's events were contested in the smaller Exhibition Hall II. [1]

The 1952 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XV Olympiad and commonly known as Helsinki 1952, were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1952 in Helsinki, Finland.
At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, nine events in gymnastics were contested. The competitions were held from 10 August 1936 to 12 August 1936.
Töölö Sports Hall is a sports venue located in the Töölö district of Helsinki, Finland. It was designed by Aarne Hytönen and Risto-Veikko Luukkonen and built in 1935 as Messuhalli. It is located near the Olympic Stadium, the Opera House, and the Sonera Stadium.
Bill Roetzheim was an American gymnast. He competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics and the 1952 Summer Olympics. Roetzheim won gold at the 1951 Pan American Games, and he was also an army veteran who served in the Korean War.

The event was won by Viktor Chukarin of the Soviet Union, with his countryman Hrant Shahinyan taking silver. It was the Soviet debut in the event, beginning four decades of dominance rivalled only by Japan and ending only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union; the Soviets would win 6 of the 10 editions from 1952 to 1988, with Japan taking the other 4. Bronze in 1952 went to Josef Stalder of Switzerland ; it was the last medal in the men's all-around for any gymnast not from the Soviet Union or Japan until 1980.

The Soviet Union's debut resulted in a silver medal for Viktor Chukarin, who would become the third multi-medalist in 1956.

Switzerland also took one of the silver medals, as Josef Stalder tied with Alfred Schwarzmann of Germany, competing at the age of 40, for second. Stalder and Schwarzmann were the first two men to win multiple horizontal bars medals; Stalder had won the event in 1948 and Schwarzmann had earned bronze in 1936.
