All other Captain amounts from 1916 to 1988 are based on extensive research of game film, match statistics and match lineups found on numerous websites, [1] [2] [3] [4] which have been able to place a captain with every FIFA USMNT Match.

After the World Cup, Lalas went on to become the first American in Italy's Serie A as a member of Calcio Padova.

Earnest Lee Stewart Jr. is a former soccer player who played as a striker or a midfielder. His career spanned 17 years from 1988 until his retirement in 2005, with the majority of the years spent in the Netherlands, the country of his birth. Stewart also represented the United States in international soccer.

Steven Emil Cherundolo is an American soccer coach and former player who serves as head coach of Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. A right-back, he was the captain of Hannover 96 of the German Bundesliga, where he spent his entire club career. He represented the United States at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.

Mark Stephen Sampson is an American soccer coach. He is also the former head coach of both the United States men's national team and the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

Gregg Matthew Berhalter is an American soccer coach and former player who is currently the head coach of the United States men's national soccer team. He is the first person in United States history to participate in the FIFA World Cup as both a player and head coach. His tenure as coach has been noted for the recruitment of a younger player roster.

Bruce Edward Murray is an American former professional soccer player who at the time of his retirement was the all-time leading scorer for the United States men's national soccer team. His standout college career led to his selection by Soccer America Magazine to its College Team of the Century. He then played professionally in both Europe and the United States, including the American Soccer League and American Professional Soccer League. Concussion syndrome forced him to retire in 1995, Murray had earned 86 caps, scoring 21 goals, including one at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He was also a member of the U.S. national futsal team which placed third at the 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship. Murray is the Direct of Coaching at Accelerator School DC Metro. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

The Mexico–United States football rivalry is a sports rivalry between the national football teams of the two countries, widely considered the two major powers of CONCACAF. It began with the first match played in 1934. The teams have met 77 times, with Mexico leading the overall series 36–17–24 (W–D–L). The U.S. holds the edge since 2000 though, with a 19–8–9 (W–D–L) advantage in the 21st century.

The history of the United States men's national soccer team began with that team's first international match in 1916. Highlights from the team's early history include reaching the semifinals of the 1930 World Cup then FIFA recognized third place for the United States in 1986, and defeating England in a remarkable upset in the 1950 World Cup.

United States v Iran, played on 21 June 1998, was a football match between Iran and the United States in the group stage of the 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Stade de Gerland in Lyon, France. The match, which is described as the "mother of all games" and the "most politically charged game in World Cup history", ended with a 2–1 victory for Iran, the team's first ever victory in the history of the FIFA World Cup.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Trinidad and Tobago v United States (2018 FIFA World Cup qualification)</span> Football match

On October 10, 2017, Trinidad and Tobago played against the United States at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva in what was the final 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match for both teams. Trinidad and Tobago won the match 2–1 which resulted in the United States missing their first World Cup since 1986, as well as Trinidad and Tobago's first win over the United States since 2008, and their third win against them in international association football.
