The diplomatic post of United States Ambassador to East Timor (now Timor-Leste) was created after the formalization of the independence of Timor-Leste from Indonesia on May 20, 2002. The United States recognized the new nation immediately, and an embassy was opened in Dili.

The violence intensified after a majority of eligible East Timorese voters chose independence from Indonesia. Some 1,400 civilians are believed to have died. A UN-authorized force (INTERFET) consisting mainly of Australian Defence Force personnel was deployed to East Timor to establish and maintain peace.

Brazil–East Timor relations refer to the bilateral relations between Brazil and Timor-Leste. Brazil has an embassy in Dili and East Timor has its own only South American embassy in Brasilia. Both countries are members of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Due to their shared history as a Portuguese colony, Brazil and Timor-Leste have had formal relations since before Timor-Leste became an independent state in 2002. The predominant avenues for their relations are via economic capacity building programs provided by Brazil in Timor-Leste and as a part of both countries participation in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Brazil has been supportive of Timor-Leste's development as an independent democracy, and the two have cooperated on programs as diverse as technological training programs, Portuguese language instruction, and football.

Liga Futebol Timor-Leste (LFTL) is a league competition featuring football clubs from Timor Leste. It replaced the Super Liga Timorense in 2015. The competition initially consisted of two main divisions, the Primeira Divisão and Segunda Divisão, however was expanded to include a third division in 2019. As of 2020, the winner of the previous Premeria Divisão season represents Timor Leste in the AFC Cup.

Karketu Dili Futebol Clube is a Timorese professional football club based in Dili, that competes in the Liga Futebol Amadora, the top tier domestic league since its inception in 2016. The club wins the Premeira Divisão in 2017, finishing with a total of 28 points, 3 above runners up AS Ponte Leste. They also finished runner-up in the competition in both the 2018 Premeira Divisão to champions Boavista.

Between February 2015 and September 2017, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and from October 2017 to June 2018 he was Minister of Petroleum.
