The Australia national cricket team played its first Test match in 1877 and, along with England, is the joint-oldest recognised national cricket side in the world. It represents Australia and is organised by Cricket Australia, an organisation which has its roots in the formation of the Australasian Cricket Council in 1892. [lower-alpha 1] The team played in the first One Day International (ODI) in 1971, with England again as the opposition, [2] and in the first Twenty20 International (T20I) in 2005, with New Zealand the opponents. [3] The Australia women's cricket team played its first Test match in 1934, its first ODI in 1973 and its first T20I in 2005. [4] The first women's Test match took place on Exhibition Ground at Brisbane in 1934.
In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer") refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement. [5] This article details the five-wicket hauls taken in official international Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International matches on Australian grounds.
The first five-wicket hauls in international cricket were taken in the 1877 Test match which took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Three bowlers took five wickets in an innings in the match, Australia's Billy Midwinter taking the first five-wicket haul in the second innings of the match. England's Alfred Shaw and Australia's Tom Kendall also took five-wicket hauls during the match. [6] The first five-wicket hauls in women's international cricket also occurred in Australia; the first women's Test match in 1934 saw five-wicket hauls taken by Myrtle Maclagan, Anne Palmer and Mary Spear.
The first five-wicket haul in One Day International cricket in Australia was taken by West Indian bowler Andy Roberts in 1980 in a match against England during a tri-series competition. The first T20I five-wicket haul in the country was taken by Australian Molly Strano in 2017 in a match against New Zealand Women. [7]
