Longdon Green is a small village [1] in Lichfield District in Staffordshire, England. It is located midway between Rugeley and Lichfield on the A51 road. It is close to Cannock Chase. The village is in Longdon parish, close to the village of Longdon.
A manor once existed within the village, with the much older village of Longdon existing as far back as the Saxon era. The village of Longdon Green was originally part of the then-extensive Forest of Arden, when it was later under the control of the Bishop of Lichfield until 1546. It was then surrendered to Henry VIII, who granted ownership of the land to William Paget, 1st Baron Paget. After the ownership was given, the Manor of Longdon was established in the area which spanned as far as Burntwood, Hammerwich and Longdon. The manor was transferred to Longdon Green itself. In 1597, freeholders of the land were granted permission to graze on the land which spanned 800 acres of heathland by the manor. [2] [3]
Located at the junction between Church Hill and the A51 road, is the Longdon Hall School [4] and Lichfield Cathedral Junior School. [5] These two schools form a combined primary and secondary school for local children from the villages, hamlets, Lichfield and Rugeley. Longdon Hall is a Grade II listed building and was given the listing status in February 1964. [6]
On the 14 June 1989, Pete de Freitas, drummer for the band Echo & the Bunnymen, died in a motorcycle accident when he collided with a motor vehicle at 16:00. He was riding a 900cc Ducati motorcycle. [7]
The village is served by the "Red Lion" pub, which is a community amenity for locals and travelers through the village. [8] It underwent a refurbishment and reopened in 2014 following it. [9]
There are no regular buses through the village, with only a local bus service between Longdon Green, Armitage, Handsacre and Lichfield. Going two daily services, with one service going to Lichfield and back to Longdon Green. [10]
