Mejorada del Campo is a municipality of Spain belonging to the Community of Madrid.

Contents

History

Mejorada del Campo is first mentioned in a 1247 document, as one of the several places belonging to the personal lordship of the Bishops of Segovia south of the Sistema Central. [2] Mejorada was incorporated to the Crown's dominions and properties in 1574. [3]

Architecture

The town has a self built Cathedral of Justo which is still under construction since 12 October 1961. It is the magnum opus of former monk, Justo Gallego Martínez. The historic Chapel of San Fausto stands in the town.

The Cathedral of Justo is a building of grand proportions, much a like a grand Christian Cathedral. It is situated in Mejorada del Campo. It was being built by a single person Justo Gallego Martínez, who has since died at the age of 96 years, and donated it to the Messengers of Peace for them to finish construction.

Alvia is a high-speed train service in Spain used by Renfe Operadora for long-distance service with a top speed of 250 km/h (160 mph). The trains have the ability to use both Iberian gauge and standard gauge, which allows them to travel on the recently constructed high-speed lines for part of the journey before switching to the "classic" Iberian gauge network to complete it. Trains that run exclusively on high-speed tracks are branded AVE or Avant.

Justo Gallego Martínez ; also known by his honorific byname Don Justo, was a Spaniard who was known for constructing a church building in the dimensions of a cathedral on his own in the town of Mejorada del Campo since 1961. Most of the construction materials used were recycled or made from "junk". Don Justo dedicated the building to Our Lady of the Pillar.

He is best known for being the very first Spanish representative in the International Olympic Committee and as the fundamental head behind the foundation of the Spanish Olympic Committee in 1912.
