#Milifandom was an online campaign celebrating Ed Miliband, then-Leader of the Labour Party in the UK. The campaign was thought to have been started on Twitter by a seventeen-year-old student, Abby Tomlinson, [1] [2] with the aim of creating an online fandom for the leader. Supporters then used the Milifandom hashtag to declare their admiration for Miliband. The campaign has been viewed as an example of youth engagement in politics, as well as a backlash against negative portrayals of Miliband in the media.
The Milifandom hashtag began trending on Twitter in late-April 2015, as the result of a Twitter campaign led by a seventeen-year-old sixth-form student from St. Helens, Merseyside; then known as just "Abby". Tomlinson described the campaign as "a movement against the distorted media portrayal of Ed," and claimed that she "started the #millifandom campaign to show how powerful young people are." Tomlinson gained 12,000 followers on Twitter as a result. [3] [4]
The hashtag has been used both to express affection for Miliband, and show support for Labour policies. Members of the Milifandom, known as 'Milifans,' began referring to Miliband as 'Milibae' and tweeting photos of him with rings of flowers photoshopped onto his head. Photo edits in which Miliband's face was superimposed onto pictures of celebrities were spread on the hashtag, many originating from an account called "cooledmiliband." [4] [5] Users of the hashtag have also spread the Labour Party's manifesto and policies. [6]
Tomlinson received media attention when she accused Rupert Murdoch and The Sun of bullying her, after the newspaper's reporters tracked down her home address, and that of her grandmother. Barrister John Cooper launched a pro-bono inquiry into these actions. A spokesman for The Sun claimed the addresses were gained through legal means and that the newspaper had not violated its Editors' Code. [7] [8] Michael Koziol of the Sydney Morning Herald claimed that Tomlinson's actions have "elevated [her] to hero status among Labour supporters and Murdoch-detractors in Britain." [7]
Following the 2015 General Election, Tomlinson had more than 27,000 followers on Twitter. Miliband resigned as leader of the Labour Party on 8 May, following the defeat of Labour in the election. In his resignation speech he thanked his supporters by saying "Thank you for the selfies, thank you for the support, and thank you for the most unlikely cult of the 21st century, Milifandom". [9] Tomlinson has since written for The Guardian , [10] the Daily Mirror , [11] and Huffington Post UK on issues relating to the Labour Party and British politics in general.
Milifandom has been compared in the press to teenage fandoms surrounding popular musicians such as Justin Bieber and One Direction. [5] [7] Writing for The Daily Telegraph Radhika Sanghani argued that, while Milifandom may have started as an ironic joke for some Twitter users, it had developed into a genuine display of affection for Miliband that distinguished itself from other fandoms through its support for his "80-page manifesto." [6] Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett of The Guardian claimed that Milifandom represented the ""meme-ification" of politics," and its members were making the statement that "I am progressive and I follow politics with a keen sense of irony. And I fancy Ed Miliband." [12]
Miliband has responded positively to the fandom, sending thanks to Tomlinson over Twitter and calling her on the phone. [7] He stated on the Jeremy Vine Show that "It's very nice of those people who have joined this thing to be being nice about me, but I think they're making a serious point about young people in our politics as well." [13] Miliband's wife Justine Thornton is reported to have "rolled her eyes" upon being informed of the fandom's existence. Miliband claims that "she thinks it might be a case of mistaken identity." [14]
#Cameronettes, a Conservative response to the Milifandom, was suggested by 21-year-old Twitter user and University of Exeter student, Charlie Evans. [13] A Cameronettes Twitter account was created, that claims to be run by a 13-year-old girl. The hashtag has been reported by the BBC to be "less successful" than the Milifandom. [4] In the 2017 General Election, the Mayllennials came into existence as a fandom for British Prime Minister Theresa May, who was seeking to be re-elected. The fandom was said to be inspired from the Milifandom. [15] 2017 also saw the creation of #Moggmentum, a movement supporting Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Edward Samuel Miliband is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero since July 2024. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Doncaster North since 2005. Miliband was Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition between 2010 and 2015. Alongside his brother, Foreign Secretary David Miliband, he served in the Cabinet from 2007 to 2010 under Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Helen Catherine Goodman is a British former politician who served as Member of Parliament for Bishop Auckland from 2005 to 2019. A member of the Labour Party, she was Deputy Leader of the House of Commons from 2007 to 2008 and a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2009 to 2010. She also served in government as an Assistant Whip from 2008 to 2009.
The "EdStone" was a large stone tablet which was commissioned by the Labour Party during the 2015 general election. The stone was 2.6 metres tall and featured six election pledges carved into it, together with the Labour logo, and a copy of the signature of the party leader Ed Miliband. It was much mocked; for example, John Rentoul, a biographer of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, described it as the "most absurd, ugly, embarrassing, childish, silly, patronising, idiotic, insane, ridiculous gimmick I have ever seen".

Lance Price is Chief of Staff to Kim Leadbeater, MP for Batley and Spen in the UK. He returned to active politics to help run her by-election campaign, having worked with her at the Jo Cox Foundation since the murder of her sister, who was MP for the constituency from 2015 to 2016. He is also a writer, broadcaster and political commentator. He was a journalist for the BBC from 1981 to 1998, then became special adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair, eventually assuming the role of Director of Communications for the Labour Party, coordinating the Labour Party election campaign of 2001. He has published five books, and appears regularly on Sky News and the BBC. Ray Edward Harry Collins, Baron Collins of Highbury is a British politician and trade unionist serving as a Member of the House of Lords since 2011. A member of the Labour Party, he served as General Secretary of the Party from 2008 to 2011. Collins has been Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Africa, and a Lord-in-waiting since July 2024.

Describing itself as Labour's "biggest independent grassroots e-network", the site's content includes news, commentary, interviews, campaign information, analysis and opinion from various contributors and sources across the Labour and trade union movement. It is funded by trade unions, adverts, and individual donors. LabourList started as a weblog with reader comments, but in February 2019 the ability for readers to write comments was removed.
The Sun is a British tabloid newspaper, published by the News Group Newspapers division of News UK, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Lachlan Murdoch's News Corp. It was founded as a broadsheet in 1964 as a successor to the Daily Herald, and became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by its current owner. The Sun had the largest daily newspaper circulation in the United Kingdom, but was overtaken by freesheet rival Metro in March 2018.

A photograph of Ed Miliband, then the leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom, eating a bacon sandwich became a source of sustained commentary and the subject of an Internet meme in 2014 and 2015. Taken for the London Evening Standard while Miliband was campaigning in the 2014 local elections, the image became well-known following the popular perception of it as making Miliband appear awkward, error-prone, and incapable of performing simple tasks.

The 2015 Labour Party leadership election was triggered by the resignation of Ed Miliband as Leader of the Labour Party on 8 May 2015, following the party's defeat at the 2015 general election. Harriet Harman, the Deputy Leader, became Acting Leader but announced that she would stand down following the leadership election. It was won by Jeremy Corbyn in the first round. Coterminous with the leadership election, in the 2015 Labour Party deputy leadership election, Tom Watson was elected to succeed Harman as deputy leader.
In 2015, Andy Burnham, the Member of Parliament for Leigh, stood as a candidate for leadership of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom. His candidacy was announced upon the release of a YouTube video on 15 May 2015. His announcement involved the promise to "rediscover the beating heart of Labour" and appeal to the aspirations "of everyone".
In 2016, Owen Smith, the Member of Parliament for Pontypridd, challenged Jeremy Corbyn for the leadership of the Labour Party, triggering an election in the United Kingdom, one year following the previous leadership ballot. His candidacy was announced in a statement on 13 July 2016, in which he declared himself to be a supporter of many of Corbyn's policies but that Corbyn did not possess the qualities necessary to win the next general election. He pledged to prevent the party from splitting and to lead Labour back into government.
#KHive is the hashtag used by an informal online community supporting Kamala Harris, the 49th vice president of the United States and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee. The hashtag is also a term that is always pronounced and occasionally transcribed as K-Hive, and refers to the wider online community that is not formally affiliated with her campaign or office. The community formed prior to and during her 2020 presidential campaign as an effort to defend Harris from perceived misinformation and attacks perceived as racist and sexist. The movement has been cited as an example of social media fandom or stan culture.
On 29 November 2021, Keir Starmer, Leader of the Opposition in the United Kingdom, carried out a reshuffle of his shadow cabinet. The slimmed down shadow cabinet, was seen to be Starmer creating a top team in his own image.
"Chaos with Ed Miliband" is a phrase from a 2015 tweet by David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, targeting Ed Miliband, Leader of the Opposition. On 4 May – a few days before the 2015 United Kingdom general election – Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, wrote on Twitter that the British public faced a choice between "stability and strong Government" with him, or "chaos with Ed Miliband", who was leading the Labour Party into the election. The political turmoil in the United Kingdom after the 2015 election, and in the wake of Cameron's resignation after the 2016 Brexit referendum, made the tweet "infamous".
Ed Miliband was elected as Leader of the Opposition in September 2010, following the resignation of Gordon Brown after the formation of David Cameron and Nick Clegg's Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government in the aftermath of the 2010 general election.
