Okere District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Akuapim North District in 1988, which was created from the former Akuapim District Council; until it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 15 March 2012 to become Akuapim North Municipal District .

However on 15 March 2018, the northeast part of the district was split off to create Okere District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Akuapim North Municipal District when the Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2342 in 2017 in pursuance to the Government’s Decentralization Policy and Local Government Reform Policy [2] was implemented to split off the Okere District from the Akuapim North Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southeast part of Eastern Region and has Adukrom as its capital town.

September 27, 2021, Daniel Kenneth was appointed as the District Chief Executive of the Okere District. [3]

Towns

The Traditional Area comprises seven main towns is Abiriw, Dawu, Awukugua, Adukrom, Apirede, Aseseeso and Abonse and over one hundred and fifty smaller towns and villages which residents hail from one of the seven main towns. The language spoken amongst the indigenes of the area is Kyerepon. [5]

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

The district can be found on the Akuapem Ridge located in the South Eastern part of the Eastern Region, of the Republic of Ghana about 68km from Accra which shares boundaries with Akuapem North Municipal Assembly to the South and East to Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly. [6]

The Akuapem are one of the main ethnic groups of the Akan people living in Ghana. They mostly reside south of the Eastern Region of Ghana.The Akuapem people are indigenous patriarchal, Volta-Comoe-speaking Guans and matriarchal Kwa-speaking Akans.

It shares borders with Awukugua Akuapem where Okomfo anokye was born The town is known for the Nifahene Stool of Akuapem and the capital of Okere District and situated on the Togo Atakora hills on the main Ho-Koforidua main trunk road in the northern part of Akuapem.

Akuapim-Mampong is a town in the Akuapim North district of the Eastern Region of Ghana. It shares boundaries with Mamfe .It is famous for being the first place cocoa was planted in Ghana by Tetteh Quarshie

Obosomase is a town in the Akuapim South Municipal District of the Eastern Region of south Ghana. It shares borders with Ahwerase and Tutu Akuapem
