Birim Central Municipal District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. [2] Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as the first Birim South District , which it was created from the former Birim District Council, until the western part of the district was split off to create a new Birim South District , with Akim Swedru as its capital town; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Birim Central Municipal District on 29 February 2008, with Akim Oda as its capital town, which it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on that same year. However on 15 March 2018, the southeast part of the district was split off to become Asene-Manso-Akroso District ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Birim Central Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southwest part of Eastern Region and has Akim Oda as its capital town.
Birim Central Municipal District is located in the southwestern corner of the Eastern Region. To the north is the Birim North and Kwaebibirem Districts and to the west, the Adansi South District in the Ashanti and the Assin North District. Birim Central Municipal district's southern neighbours are Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa and Agona West Municipal Districts in Central Region. The West Akim Municipal District lies to the east of Birim Central Municipal District. [2]
The Big Tree is one of the major attractions in Birim Central Municipal District. It is believed to be the biggest in West Africa and measures 12 metres in circumference and 66.5 metres in height. The tree is in the Esen Epan Forest Reserve, one of 9 forest reserves in the Birim Central Municipal District. [3]

The Eastern Region is located in the Eastern part of Ghana and is one of the sixteen administrative regions of Ghana. Eastern region is bordered to the east by the Lake Volta, to the north by Bono East Region and Ashanti region, to the west by Ashanti region, to the south by Central region and Greater Accra Region. Akim Oda, a town in Ghana's Eastern Region, serves as the administrative and traditional center of the Birim Central Municipal District and Akyem Kotoku, respectively. The town had 60,604 residents as of 2013.

Then it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 29 February 2008 to become East Akim Municipal District. However, on 1 June 2018, it was split off into two new municipal districts: Abuakwa South Municipal District and Abuakwa North Municipal District. The municipality was located in the central part of Eastern Region and had Kibi as its capital town.
Kwaebibirem Municipal District is one of the thirty-three districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Kwaebibirem District, which was created from the former West Akim District Council. However on 6 February 2012, the southern part of the district was split off to create Denkyembour District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Kwaebibirem District. Later, it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 15 March 2018 to become 'Kwaebibirem Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southern part of Eastern Region and has Kade as its capital town.
Obuasi Municipal Assembly is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Adansi West District in 1988, until part of the district was split off to create Obuasi Municipal District on 15 December 2003 ; whose remaining parts had been absorbed into parts of Adansi North District and Adansi South District respectively. Later, the eastern part of the district was split off to create Obuasi East District on 15 March 2018; thus the remaining part has been retained as Obuasi Municipal Assembly. The municipality is the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Obuasi as its capital town.

The Birim River is one of the main tributaries of the Pra River in Ghana and the country's most important diamond-producing area, flowing through most of the width of the Eastern region. The river rises in the east of the Atewa Range, flows north through the gap between this range and the Kwahu Plateau, then runs roughly south-west until it joins the Pra. It gives its name to the Birimian rock formation, which yields most of the gold in the region. Ghana is the second largest producer of gold in Africa.
