Omar Sarfraz Cheema (born 24 July 1969) is a Pakistani politician who has been a founding member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He served as the Governor of Punjab for a little over a month,from 3 April 2022 till 10 May 2022 amidst the 2022 Constitutional crisis in Punjab,Pakistan. On advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif he was removed as Governor and ceased to hold office on 10 May 2024. [1] Cheema was replaced by Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman on 30 May 2022,despite resistance from the President of Pakistan,Arif Alvi. [2] Alvi conceded and approved the replacement of Cheema. [3] He has been held in prison since 2023 in alleged relation to the May 9 riots and has been incarcerated while being denied proper facilities while imprisoned. [4] [5]
Cheema was born on July 24,1969,in Wazirabad,Punjab and belongs to a Jat Family. He has studied at Saint Anthony's School Lahore. He did his graduation from Government College University Lahore. [6]
He entered politics in 1996 and was a key founding member of PTI. According to PTI,he held party positions in various Tehsils.
On 3 April 2022,amidst a constitutional crisis in Punjab,Cheema was appointed as the Governor of Punjab by Imran Khan after the removal of Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar. [7] [8]
Following the No-confidence motion against Imran Khan,Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a summary for the removal of Cheema as Governor of Punjab to President Arif Alvi, [9] The president approved the summary,though the President also stated that he resisted the removal, [2] and Cheema was removed from office on 10 May 2022. [10] [11]
Cheema was inducted into the cabinet of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as the Punjab Chief Minister's advisor on information on 6 August 2022 and as advisor on Home and Prisons from 13 October 2022. He ceased to hold both offices on 14 January 2023. [12] [13]
On 10 May 2023,Cheema was arrested after a 4:00 AM raid on his house by authorities a day after PTI chairman Imran Khan was arrested. [14]
Following his arrest,Cheema was caught in various legal troubles due to his relation with the May 9 riots. He was held in jail on judicial remand which was later extended by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC). On 22 June 2023 Cheema's wife,Rabia Sultan was arrested while waiting outside the ATC in Lahore. [15] Authorities alleged Cheema and Rabia had a relation to the May 9 riots. Cheema is currently incarcerated,and his wife has alleged that he is not being provided with basic needs or facilities while imprisoned by the authorities. [4] [5]
On 22 November,Cheema was re-arrested in a case related to the May 9 riots, [16] which PTI alleges is a false flag operation. [17]
Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar is a Pakistani and former British politician who served as the 31st and 33rd Governor of Punjab,from 2013 to 2015 and from 2018 to 2022. In his first term,he represented the Pakistan Muslim League (N). In his second term,he represented the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He was a member of the Senate of Pakistan from March 2018 until September 2018. From 1997 to 2010 Sarwar was a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom,representing a constituency in Glasgow,Scotland. He is the father of Anas Sarwar,the current leader of the Scottish Labour Party.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is a political party in Pakistan established in 1996 by Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan,who served as the country's prime minister from 2018 to 2022. The PTI ranks among the three major Pakistani political parties alongside the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML–N) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP),and it is the largest party in terms of representation in the National Assembly of Pakistan since the 2018 general election. With over 10 million members in Pakistan and abroad,it claims to be the country's largest political party by primary membership,as well as one of the largest political parties in the world.

Previously in his political career,he served as the chief minister of Punjab three times,making him the longest-serving chief minister of Punjab.

In his first term,he co-drafted the Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan,which merged the Federally Administered Tribal Areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi is a Pakistani politician who served as the 13th president of Pakistan,in office from 2018 to 2024. He was a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from June 2013 to May 2018 and again from August to September 2018. Alvi was a dentist before entering politics in 1979,when he joined Jamaat-e-Islami (Pakistan),but resigned later on from the party and then joined former cricketer Imran Khan's party in 1996 and is amongst the founding members of PTI.
Rana Sanaullah Khan is a Pakistani lawyer and politician who is currently serving as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs since April 2024. Previously,he served as the 39th Interior Minister of Pakistan in first Shehbaz Sharif's Government. He is second most popular official in Shehbaz Sharif Government. He's been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from August 2018 till August 2023. He is a senior member of PML-N and the President of PML-N in Punjab province since 4 May 2019. Before getting elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan,Sanaullah had been elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab five times and had served in high-ranking ministries of the province.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician,currently serving as the 20th Chief Minister of Punjab,in office since 26 February 2024. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and her initial involvement in public life was through her family’s philanthropic organisations. However,her political career began in earnest in 2012 when she took charge of the election campaign for the 2013 general elections. Following the elections,she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in 2013. Despite her active role,she resigned from the position in 2014 after her appointment was legally challenged in the Lahore High Court.
Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman is a Pakistani politician who is the former Governor of Punjab,he served in office from 30 May 2022 till 10 May 2024.

General elections,originally scheduled to be held in 2023,were held in Pakistan on 8 February 2024 to elect the members of the 16th National Assembly. The Election Commission of Pakistan announced the detailed schedule on 15 December 2023.
In April 2022,a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan led to his removal as the prime minister of Pakistan. Based largely on the Westminster system of legislature,the prime minister commands confidence of the majority of the lower house of Parliament,the National Assembly of Pakistan,under clause (2A) of Article 91 of the Constitution. Numerous opposition parties joined forces to file the motion of no confidence against Imran Khan in the National Assembly. It ultimately led to the removal of Khan from office as a majority passed the motion in the Lower House.
The constitutional crisis in Pakistan's Punjab province began on 28 March 2022,when Usman Buzdar tendered his resignation as Chief Minister at the request of Prime Minister Imran Khan and nominated former Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to replace him. On 1 April 2022,his resignation was accepted by then Governor of Punjab,Chaudary Mohammed Sarwar.
Provincial elections were held in the Pakistani province of Punjab on 8 February 2024 to elect a new provincial legislature. On 5 August 2023,the results of the 2023 digital census were approved by the Council of Common Interests headed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Therefore,elections have been delayed for several months,as new delimitations will be published on 14 December 2023,as announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). On 2 November 2023,the ECP announced,in agreement with the President of Pakistan,Arif Alvi,that the elections will be held on 8 February 2024. The election was held concurrently with nationwide general elections and other provincial elections.
On 3 November 2022,Imran Khan,a former prime minister of Pakistan and chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party,was shot in an attempted assassination in Wazirabad,Punjab,during the 2022 Azadi March II against the Pakistan government. The gunman also injured a number of other PTI leaders and killed a supporter. The attacker's name is Muhammad Naveed and another unidentified gunman was killed.
The 2022–2023 Pakistan political unrest was a series of political crises after the ousting of former prime minister Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion in April 2022. The crises began in 2022 when the opposition joined hands and submitted a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan's government in the National Assembly. Prime Minister Imran Khan urged the Pakistani establishment not to stay neutral and play its role to save his government and not let historical rival politicians with alleged corruption charges take over,but the establishment refused.

The May 9 riots, also called the May 9 protests,and known as Black Day by the Pakistani government,were a series of violent riots that took place on 9 May 2023,in Pakistan. Following the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Prime Minister of Pakistan,Imran Khan,from the grounds of the Islamabad High Court,nationwide demonstrations held by PTI's supporters descended into violent riots. Incidents of vandalism,looting,and arson resulted in Rs. 1.98 billion worth of damage inflicted to government and military facilities by PTI workers and members of the public. As the protests suddenly descended into violence and chaos and began attacking law enforcement officers,the government responded with a cellular service and internet blockade and a crackdown against PTI leaders,workers,and supporters,as well as those perceived to be allied to the party's cause within the media and legal fraternity. Trials of civilians within military courts were also initiated and are being challenged in the country's Supreme Court.
Ahad Khan Cheema is a retired Pakistani bureaucrat who is the current Federal Minister of Economic Affairs,appointed on 11 March 2024. Previously,he has served as a chief executive officer (CEO) of the Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power Company and director-general of the Lahore Development Authority. In 2018,the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Cheema on charges related to irregularities in the Ashiana Housing Scheme project during his time as chairman of the LDA. The investigation also involved former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's principal secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad and Shehbaz Sharif. Cheema was released on bail in 2021 after spending three years in jail and was acquitted of all charges by the NAB in 2023. He took retirement from civil service in January 2023.
The Buzdar provincial government was the Government of Punjab,Pakistan led by Chief Minister of Punjab,Sardar Usman Buzdar and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from 27 August 2018 to 1 April 2022. His cabinet saw many prominent ministers from the First Parvez Elahi provincial government such as Mian Aslam Iqbal,Aleem Khan and Sibtain Khan. The cabinet also saw reshuffles,while Yasmin Rashid,a politician and gynecologist health expert was granted all health portfolios. Hashim Jawan Bakht,a graduate from the McGill University was also made Minister of Finance.
