PT-143 was a PT-103-class motor torpedo boat of the United States Navy that served during World War II.
PT-143 was ordered by the United States Navy and laid down on 13 July 1942 at the Elco Works of the Electric Launch Company (now Electric Boat Company) at their Bayonne, New Jersey shipyard; launched on 25 September 1942; and completed on 13 October 1942. [1] She was commissioned and assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 8 (MTBRon 8) under the command of Lieutenant Commander Barry K. Atkins, USN. [1] [2] MTBRon 8 then consisted of PT-143 along with PT-66, PT-67, PT-68, PT-142, PT-143, PT-144, PT-145, PT-146, PT-147, PT-148, PT-149, and PT-150. [3] The squadron was assigned to the Southwest Pacific where it operated out of PT boat bases at Tufi, Morobe, Kiriwina Island, Aitape, Mios Woendi, Dreger Harbor, and Kana Kopa (Milne Bay) on New Guinea; at Rein Bay and Talasea on New Britain; and at Mangarin Bay (Mindoro Island), San Pedro Bay (Leyte Island), and Tawi Tawi off Borneo in the Philippines. [1] In January 1943, PTs 144–148 were transferred to MTBRon 2 and replaced in April 1943 by PT-113 and PT-114 from MTBRon 2 along with PT-120, PT-121, and PT-122 from MTBRon 6; and PT-110 also from MTBRon 2 in June 1943. In the early morning of 4 March 1943, during the Battle of Bismarck Sea, 10 PT boats under Atkins were sent to attack the surviving convoy off Lae. [4] PT-119 and PT-132 hit flotsam and had to return to base while PT-143 (under Lieutenant Junior Grade John S. Baylis USNR) with PT-66, PT-67, PT-68, PT-121, PT-128 (MTBRon 7), PT-149, and PT-150 continued on. [4] PT-143 and PT-150 spotted the burning transport ship Oigawa Maru , and each successfully fired a torpedo sinking the ship. [4] 78 crewmen and 1,151 troops of the 51st Division were killed. [5]
On 28 October 1945 at Samar, Philippines, PT-143 was decommissioned, stripped of usable items, and destroyed by U.S. military personnel. [1]
A PT boat was a motor torpedo boat used by the United States Navy in World War II. It was small, fast, and inexpensive to build, valued for its maneuverability and speed but hampered at the beginning of the war by ineffective torpedoes, limited armament, and comparatively fragile construction that limited some of the variants to coastal waters. In the USN they were organized in Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons (MTBRONs).
The Battle of the Bismarck Sea took place in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II when aircraft of the U.S. Fifth Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) attacked a Japanese convoy carrying troops to Lae, New Guinea. Most of the Japanese task force was destroyed, and Japanese troop losses were heavy.
Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three was a United States Navy squadron based at Cavite, Philippines, from September 1941 to mid-April 1942. It was commanded by Lieutenant John D. Bulkeley and made up of six motor torpedo boats: PT-31, PT-32, PT-33, PT-34, PT-35, and PT-41, the last as the squadron flagship. The other six boats of the squadron remained at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and were there when war broke out, eventually being shipped to the Solomons.
Patrol torpedo boat PT-34 was a PT-20-class motor torpedo boat of the United States Navy, built by the Electric Launch Company of Bayonne, New Jersey. The boat was laid down as Motor boat submarine chaser PTC-14, but was reclassified as PT-34 prior to its launch on 14 June 1941, and was commissioned on 12 July 1941.
PT-105 was a PT boat of the United States Navy during World War II. The 80-foot (24 m) motor torpedo boat was built by the Elco Motor Yacht Company of Bayonne, New Jersey, in early 1942, and served until the end of the war.
USS Jamestown (PG-55) was a patrol gunboat and after 13 January 1943 a Jamestown-class motor torpedo boat tender acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Her task in her final classification was to provide a "home base" for torpedo boats in remote parts of the ocean during the war, and to provide them with necessary services, such as fuel, food, and repairs.
USS Oyster Bay (AGP-6), originally and later AVP-28, was a United States Navy motor torpedo boat tender in commission from 1943 to 1946. She saw service in World War II.
USS Wachapreague (AGP-8) was a motor torpedo boat tender in commission in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, seeing service in the latter part of World War II. After her Navy decommissioning, she was in commission in the United States Coast Guard from 1946 to 1972 as the cutter USCGC McCulloch (WAVP-386), later WHEC-386, the fourth ship of the U.S. Coast Guard or its predecessor, the United States Revenue Cutter Service, to bear the name. In 1972 she was transferred to South Vietnam and served in the Republic of Vietnam Navy as the frigate RVNS Ngô Quyền (HQ-17). Upon the collapse of South Vietnam at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, she fled to the Philippines, and she served in the Philippine Navy from 1977 to 1985 as the frigate RPSGregorio del Pilar (PF-8) and from 1987 to 1990 as BRP Gregorio del Pilar (PF-12).
The second USS Willoughby (AGP-9) was a motor torpedo boat tender that served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, seeing service in the later stages of World War II. Transferred to the United States Coast Guard in 1946, she was in commission as the cutter USCGC Gresham (WAVP-387), later WHEC-387 and WAGW-387, from 1947 to 1969 and from 1970 to 1973, seeing service in the Vietnam War during her Coast Guard career.
USS Varuna (AGP-5) was a Portunus-class motor torpedo boat tender of the United States Navy during World War II.
Cape Carthage was laid down under a Maritime Commission contract on 5 June 1943 by Pusey & Jones Corp., Wilmington, Del.; launched on 12 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. J. H. Deinlein; acquired by the Navy on 22 December 1943; renamed Acontius and designated AGP-12; converted for naval service at Baltimore, Md., by the Maryland Drydock Co.; and commissioned on 23 June 1944, Lt. Comdr. R. G. Heppard in command.
Rear Admiral Morton Claire Mumma, Jr. was a senior officer in the United States Navy. He was awarded the Navy Cross for actions on 13 December 1941 while commanding USS Sailfish (SS-192) during World War II. He later served as naval aide to Secretary James Forrestal in 1944–45, and retired in 1946. Mumma was president of the National Rifle Association from 1955 to 1957, and at his death was on the association's executive council.
Oigawa Maru (大井川丸) was a 6,494 GRT transport ship of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II.
The MT class were eight motor torpedo boats that served with the Yugoslav Navy post-World War II. They were originally built for the United States Navy by Higgins Industries as patrol torpedo boats, and served in the Mediterranean Sea with them, before being transferred to the Royal Navy at Malta in late 1944. All survived the war to be taken over by the Yugoslav Navy, with one being deleted in 1955, and the rest struck off in 1966.

I-6 was an Imperial Japanese Navy J2 type submarine commissioned in 1935. She was a large cruiser submarine that served in the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. During the latter conflict she operated in support of the attack on Pearl Harbor, torpedoed the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3), conducted anti-shipping patrols in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, and took part in the Aleutian Islands campaign and New Guinea campaign before she was sunk in June 1944.
