The MT class were eight motor torpedo boats that served with the Yugoslav Navy post-World War II. They were originally built for the United States Navy by Higgins Industries as patrol torpedo boats, and served in the Mediterranean Sea with them, before being transferred to the Royal Navy at Malta in late 1944. All survived the war to be taken over by the Yugoslav Navy, with one being deleted in 1955, and the rest struck off in 1966.

Background

The United States Navy first became interested in motor torpedo boats (MTBs) in the mid-1930s, due to overseas developments in the type. The US Navy imported some British MTBs and developed prototypes of their own. Production patrol torpedo boat (PT boat) models were built from March 1942 onwards by a number of manufacturers, including Higgins Industries of New Orleans. Initial armament was four torpedo tubes and two twin 12.7-millimetre (0.50 in) machine gun mounts, although the tubes were replaced by racks, and the gun armament was progressively upgraded as the war continued. Production batches were generally in multiples of 12 boats, as this was the size of a US Navy Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron (MTBRon). [1] [2] [3]

Description and construction

Higgins built several batches of PT boats from the first "Maximum Effort Program" series contract signed on 25 March 1942, comprising PT197PT254. This included PT201PT218, which were built in 1943. [2] PT201PT218 had a length overall of 23.93 m (78 ft 6 in), a beam of 6.12 m (20 ft 1 in) and a normal draught of 1.6 m (5 ft 3 in). While their designed displacement was 38 tonnes (37 long tons), they displaced 54 tonnes (53 long tons) fully loaded. The crew consisted of 17 officers and enlisted men. Their three petrol engines generated 4,050 brake horsepower (3,020 kW) driving three shafts, and the boats were designed to reach a top speed of 39 knots (72 km/h; 45 mph). They carried 11,000 litres (3,000 US gal) of fuel, which gave them a range of 500 nautical miles (930 km; 580 mi) at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph). [4] [5]

During their service, their armament had been significantly enhanced, so that by August 1944, their gun armament consisted of one Bofors 40 mm (1.6 in) gun on the stern, and two Oerlikon 20 mm (0.79 in) guns, one on the bow and one just forward of the 40 mm mount. The two twin M2 Browning 12.7 mm machine gun mounts were located on either side of the bridge, and there were also two single Browning M1919 7.62-millimetre (.30 in) machine guns amidships. Four 571 mm (22.5 in) Mark 13 torpedoes were carried in racks, with two on either side, one amidships and one on the rear deck just forward of the rear gun. [5]

Service history

MTBRon 15 was commissioned on 20 January 1943. After fit-out and training of crews, MTBRon 15 was based in the Mediterranean Sea under the tactical control of British Royal Navy coastal forces. PT202 and PT218 were mined in August 1944, and the remaining boats of MTBRon 15, PT201, PT203PT217, were transferred to the Royal Navy in October 1944. In August 1945, PT201, PT204, PT207PT209, PT211, PT213 and PT217 were transferred to the Yugoslav Navy that had grown out of the maritime forces of the Yugoslav Partisans. They remained in service until 1966, except for one boat that was deleted in 1955. The boats were considered a successful type, and were copied by the Yugoslavs, who made 96 similar boats between 1951 and 1960. [4] [6]

The motor gunboat (MGB) was a small, high-speed British military vessel of the Second World War, which was armed with a mix of guns, in contrast to the physically similar motor torpedo boat (MTB), whose main offensive weapon were torpedoes. The small size of the MGBs, and their high speed, made them difficult targets for German E-boats, though, like their opponents, they were limited by heavy weather, because they did not provide a stable-enough platform to aim the guns. The large number of guns meant the crew was relatively large, numbering as high as thirty men on the largest boats.

The Porter-class destroyers were a class of eight 1,850-ton large destroyers in the United States Navy. Like the preceding Farragut-class, their construction was authorized by Congress on 26 April 1916, but funding was delayed considerably. They were designed based on a 1,850-ton standard displacement limit imposed by the London Naval Treaty; the treaty's tonnage limit allowed 13 ships of this size, and the similar Somers class was built later to meet the limit. The first four Porters were laid down in 1933 by New York Shipbuilding in Camden, New Jersey, and the next four in 1934 at Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts. All were commissioned in 1936 except Winslow, which was commissioned in 1937. They were built in response to the large Fubuki-class destroyers that the Imperial Japanese Navy was building at the time and were initially designated as flotilla leaders. They served extensively in World War II, in the Pacific War, the Atlantic, and in the Americas. Porter was the class' only loss, in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 26 October 1942.

<i>Somers</i>-class destroyer Destroyer class of the US Navy

The Somers-class destroyer was a class of five 1850-ton United States Navy destroyers based on the Porter class. They were answers to the large destroyers that the Japanese navy was building at the time, and were initially intended to be flotilla leaders. They were laid down from 1935–1936 and commissioned from 1937–1939. They were built to round-out the thirteen destroyers of 1,850 tons standard displacement allowed by the tonnage limits of the London Naval Treaty, and were originally intended to be repeat Porters. However, new high-pressure, high-temperature boilers became available, allowing the use of a single stack. This combined with weight savings allowed an increase from two quadruple center-line torpedo tube mounts to three. However, the Somers class were still over-weight and top-heavy. This was the first US destroyer class to use 600 psi (4,100 kPa) steam superheated to 850 °F (454 °C), which became standard for US warships built in the late 1930s and World War II.

HMS <i>Stonehenge</i> (P232) British S-class submarine

HMS Stonehenge was an S-class submarine of the third batch built for the Royal Navy during World War II. Completed in 1943, she made her initial patrol off Norway and was then transferred to the Far East, where she conducted two war patrols, during which she sank two Japanese ships. On her second patrol, Stonehenge disappeared with all hands and was declared overdue on 20 March 1944. The most probable cause of her sinking is that she hit a mine, but her wreck has never been found.

The Hurja-class motor torpedo boats or H class was an Italian-designed class of Finnish motor torpedo boats, seeing service with the Finnish Navy during World War II. The five boats of the H class were built by Cantieri Baglietto in Genoa, Italy. The ships were converted into patrol boats in 1949, in accordance with the Paris peace treaty and their torpedo armament, forbidden by the treaty, was removed. The H class were stricken from the naval vessel register in 1963.

The Fairmile D motor torpedo boat was a type of British motor torpedo boat (MTB) and motor gunboat (MGB), conceived by entrepreneur Noel Macklin of Fairmile Marine and designed by naval architect Bill Holt for the Royal Navy. Nicknamed "Dog Boats", they were designed to be assembled in kit form mass-produced by the Fairmile organisation and assembled at dozens of small boatbuilding yards around Britain, to combat the known advantages of the German E-boats over previous British coastal craft designs. At 115 feet in length, they were bigger than earlier MTB or motor gunboat (MGB) designs but slower, at 30 knots compared to 40 knots.

The 250t class were high-seas torpedo boats built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy between 1913 and 1916. A total of 27 boats were built by three shipbuilding companies, with the letter after the boat number indicating the manufacturer. There were small variations between manufacturers, mainly in the steam turbines used, and whether they had one or two funnels. The eight boats of the T-group, designated 74 T – 81 T, were built by Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino, located at Triest. The sixteen boats of the F-group, 82 F – 97 F, were built by Ganz-Danubius at their shipyards at Fiume and Porto Re. The three M-group boats, 98 M – 100 M, were manufactured by Cantiere Navale Triestino at Monfalcone.

The Orjen class were motor torpedo boats (MTBs) built for the Royal Navy of Yugoslavia in 1936 and 1937. A total of eight boats were built by the at the Lürssen Shipyard at Vegesack, Germany. They were based on the German S-2 MTBs, and their primary armament was 533 mm (21 in) torpedoes launched from two 550 mm (21.7 in) torpedo tubes, with anti-aircraft protection provided by a 40 mm (1.6 in) gun and a 15 mm (0.59 in) machine gun. At the start of the April 1941 Axis invasion of Yugoslavia, two boats managed to escape to Alexandria in Egypt where they served under the operational command of the British Mediterranean Fleet and under the administrative control of the Yugoslav government-in-exile. Their duties included convoy escort duties and operations against Vichy French forces in Syria. The remaining six boats were captured by Italian forces and commissioned in the Regia Marina with modified anti-aircraft armament, and were heavily employed in the Aegean Sea. They were also used by the Italians as the model for the Italian-built CRDA 60 t motor torpedo boats and the submarine chasers of the VAS class.

<i>Uskok</i>-class torpedo boat Class of Royal Yugoslav Navy motor torpedo boats

The Uskok class was a class of two motor torpedo boats built for the Royal Yugoslav Navy during the late 1920s. Named Uskok and Četnik, the boats were built by the Thornycroft Company based on their existing class of 17-metre-long (55 ft) Coastal Motor Boats, but were almost 1.5 metres (5 ft) longer. As their main armament they were equipped with cradles that carried two British-designed 456-millimetre (18 in) torpedoes, were fitted with hydrophones, and could carry depth charges instead of torpedoes if used in an anti-submarine role. The boats were lightly-built using mahogany, powered by two petrol engines, but lacked transverse bulkheads within the hull to mitigate leaks.

HMS Talybont was a Type III Hunt-class escort destroyer which served in the Royal Navy. She was launched in February 1943 and completed in May that year, serving for the rest of the Second World War. She took part in the Normandy Landings in June 1944, supporting the landings at Omaha Beach and the Pointe du Hoc. Post war she served in the Mediterranean before being reduced to reserve at the end of 1947. She was sold for scrap in 1961, with disposal completed by 1962.

HMS <i>Cottesmore</i> (L78) Hunt-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy

HMS Cottesmore was a Hunt-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy. The ship was built by the Scottish shipbuilder Yarrow at their Scotstoun, Glasgow shipyard in 1939–1940, being launched on 5 September 1940 and commissioning on 29 December that year.

The German torpedo boat TA37 was an Ariete-class torpedo boat operated by the German Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. The ship was built for the Italian Navy by the shipbuilder CRDA at their Trieste shipyard with the name Gladio in 1943, but was incomplete when Italy surrendered to the Allies in September 1943, and was seized by Nazi Germany. The ship entered service as TA37 in 1944, serving in the Adriatic and Aegean seas and was sunk by British destroyers on 7 October 1944.

Vedetta anti sommergibile, commonly abbreviated as VAS and also known in Italy as VAS Baglietto, was a class of motor torpedo boats that served as coastal anti-submarine patrol boats in the Regia Marina during World War II. Several boats that survived the war later served in the post-war Italian Navy. The boats were officially classified as "anti-submarine patrol boats" and the first 30 boats were ordered by the Regia Marina at the Baglietto shipyards on 3 September 1941, entering service between March and November 1942.
