"Pedestal" is a song by Czech singer Aiko,self-released on 22 September 2023 as the lead single of Aiko's third studio album,Fortune's Child. Self-described as a "self-love,post-breakup anthem",it was written by Aiko and Steven Ansell. The song represented the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024,held in Malmö. It finished in 11th place with 38 points during semi final 2. The Eurovision version of the song appears on Aiko's fourth studio album,Aikonic.
"Pedestal" is composed by Aiko and Steven Ansell. [3] In interviews,Aiko has self-described the song as a "self-love,post-breakup anthem" meant to release her anger after breaking up in a relationship with an unnamed partner. [4] After breaking up with her partner,she had a "moment of realization" where she realized that she had not taken care of herself first. The song advocates for putting one's own self and their health as their top priority,using a "pedestal" as a metaphor for the message. [5] The song was recorded throughout January 2023. [4] In press statements,she has also claimed that the song also "talks about negative emotions and situations" one experiences at the end of a toxic relationship. [6]
According to Aiko,she submitted three entries for ESCZ 2024,including another song from her album Fortune's Child;the album from which "Pedestal" came from. [7] She was officially announced to participate in ESCZ 2024 on 28 November 2023. [8] After winning the contest,a member of the Czech delegation,Ahmad Halloun,implied the song would be revamped specifically for its performance at the Eurovision Song Contest; [9] this was confirmed by Aiko in early March,revealing that the new version would be released on 21 March. [10] [11] The revamped version features a lyrical change to comply with the contest's regulations prohibiting vulgar language. [12]
Before the album's official release,an accompanying music video for "Pedestal" was released on 22 September 2023; [13] a music video of the revamped Eurovision version was later released on 21 March 2024. [14] To further promote the song,Aiko performed the song at various Eurovision pre-parties throughout the month of April,including the Eurovision in Concert event on 13 April 2024 [15] and the Nordic Eurovision Party 2024 on 14 April. [16]
In a Wiwibloggs review containing several statements from several critics,the song was rated 7 out of 10 points, [17] earning 14th out of 37 songs on the site's annual ranking. [18] Jon O'Brien of Vulture ranked the song as 11th out of 37,describing it as "one of this year's most potent songs,a spiky post-break-up anthem/ode to self-care that could be mistaken for Paramore in their orange-haired, Twilight -bothering days". [19]
Czech Republic's broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) organized a seven-entry competition, ESCZ 2024 with a singular grand final to select its entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. [20] The edition was the sixth iteration of the national final. The winning song in the final was selected after all entries were shown in the grand final on 4 December, with voting opened until 11 December, with the winner being determined by a weighted combination of an international and a Czech public vote. Aiko was announced to compete in ESCZ 2024 on 28 November 2023, with her song for the contest being revealed during the grand final. [8] After voting was closed, on 13 December, the song was announced as the winner of the contest. Despite having a lack of votes of the Czech vote, the song earned an extreme majority of the international vote, earning more than 10,000 votes than the second-place finisher. As a result, the song won the right to represent the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. [23]
The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 took place at the Malmö Arena in Malmö, Sweden, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 7 and 9 May and the final on 11 May 2024. During the allocation draw on 30 January 2024, Czechia was drawn to compete in the second semi-final, performing in the first half of the show. [24] Aiko was later drawn to perform fifth in the semi-final, ahead of Switzerland's Nemo and before Austria's Kaleen. [25]
For her Eurovision performance, Matyas Vorda and Vit Belohradsky were appointed as staging directors. [26] It featured Aiko in a Lukáš Macháček-designed dress made out of black mesh adorned with sparkles. She was also surrounded by four dancers which represented the first four stages of the five stages of grief, with Aiko herself representing the final stage. [27]

Albania has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 20 times since its debut in 2004. The Albanian participant broadcaster in the contest is Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH), which select its entrant with the national competition Festivali i Këngës, a long-standing song contest that organises every year since 1962.
The Czech Republic, presented as Czechia since 2023, has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 12 times since making its debut in 2007. After receiving nul points in the semi-final of the 2009 contest and due to a lack of interest from the Czech public, Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) decided to withdraw from the contest. The country returned to the contest in 2015 and has participated every year since.
Lake Malawi is a Czech indie pop band from Třinec, formed in 2013. It currently consists of lead vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist Albert Černý, and bassist and keyboardist Jeroným Šubrt. The band was formed by Černý following the breakup of his former group, Charlie Straight. Their debut EP, We Are Making Love Again, was released in 2015 and followed by the album Surrounded by Light in 2017. They represented the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Friend of a Friend", finishing in eleventh place. In 2022, they released their second album, The Great Video Game Crush. The band's lyrics are in English.
The Czech Republic participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "My Turn" written by DWB and Kyler Niko. The song was performed by Martina Bárta, who was internally selected by the Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) to represent the nation at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Bárta was announced as the Czech representative on 15 February 2017, while the song "My Turn" was presented to the public on 7 March 2017.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2018 was the 63rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Lisbon, Portugal, following the country's victory at the 2017 contest with the song "Amar pelos dois" by Salvador Sobral. It took place in Tel Aviv, Israel, following the country's victory at the 2018 contest with the song "Toy" by Netta. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC/Kan), the contest was held at Expo Tel Aviv, and consisted of two semi-finals on 14 and 16 May, and a final on 18 May 2019. The three live shows were presented by Israeli television presenters Erez Tal, Assi Azar and Lucy Ayoub, and Israeli model Bar Refaeli.
The Czech Republic originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song "Kemama" written by Osama Verse-Atile, Ben Cristóvão, Charles Sarpong and Rudy Ray. The song was performed by Benny Cristo, which is the artistic name of singer Ben Cristóvão. The Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) organised the national final Eurovision Song CZ 2020 in order to select the Czech entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Seven entries competed in the national final and "Kemama" performed by Benny Cristo was announced as the winner on 3 February 2020 following the combination of votes from an eleven-member international jury panel and a public vote.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Liverpool, United Kingdom, as Ukraine, the winner of the 2022 contest with the song "Stefania" by Kalush Orchestra, was unable to host the event due to the Russian invasion of the country. It was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) acting as host broadcaster on behalf of the Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA:PBC). The contest was held at Liverpool Arena, and consisted of two semi-finals on 9 and 11 May and a final on 13 May 2023. The three live shows were presented by British singer Alesha Dixon, British actress Hannah Waddingham, and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina, with Irish television presenter Graham Norton joining for the final.

Six entries competed in the national final and "Circles" performed by Andrea was announced as the winner on 4 February 2022 following the combination of votes from a five-member international jury panel and a public vote.
Romania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom, with "D.G.T. " performed by Theodor Andrei. The Romanian broadcaster Televiziunea Română (TVR) organised the national final Selecția Națională 2023 in order to select the Romanian entry for the 2023 contest. Twelve entries were selected to compete in the national final on 11 February 2023 where "D.G.T. " performed by Theodor Andrei was selected as the winner entirely by a public vote.
