"Liar" is a song by Australian singer Silia Kapsis,released on 29 February 2024 by K2ID Productions. Self-described as a song that derides "people who live in a fake world with a fake script",it was written by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Elke Tiel. The song represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024,where it finished in 15th place with 78 points at the grand final.
"Liar" was written and composed by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Elke Tiel. [1] In press statements given before the song's release,Kapsis hinted that the song would be a dance-pop song. [2] She also later stated that her song was directed towards for people who live "fake" lives,criticizing them for pushing "body shaming [and] sexualliti[ sic ]". [3] Kapsis,who has further stated that the song focuses about the effect social media has on young women,proclaimed that the song was made to convince people to leave a "façade of fakeness". [4]
Originally,the song was to be submitted to Russia for its national final in 2022,but the country was excluded from the contest following its invasion of Ukraine. [5] In 2023,it was recorded as a demo by the Greek artist Melissa Mantzoukis,with whom she participated in the closed national selection of Greece for the 2023 competition. The song qualified for the second phase of the selection,where it got the first place by the audience committee with 693 points,but only third from the artistic committee with 440 points,managing to take second place overall with 1,133 points,behind Victor Vernicos' song "What They Say". Rumours of Kapsis being picked by Cyprus' broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest,the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC),were spread as early as mid-August 2023 by OGAE's Greek branch. [7] Kapsis was officially announced as Cyprus' representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on 25 September. [8] On 22 February 2024,Kapsis released a snippet as a sneak-peek to promote the song. [9]
Along with the song's release,an accompanying music video was released on the same day. [1] The music video was shot in the Cypriot city of Limassol, [10] and was directed by Kostas Karydas. [1] The music video features Kapsis wearing gold-colored attire. [11]
To further promote the song,Kapsis participated in Eurovision pre-parties,including Eurovision in Concert. [12] She also gave away two tickets to the Eurovision grand final via a competition that featured the song prominently. [13]
In a Wiwibloggs review containing several statements from several critics,the song was rated 6.53 out of 10 points, [14] earning 19th out of the 37 competing songs on the site's annual ranking. [15] Another review conducted by ESC Bubble that contained reviews from a combination of readers and juries rated the song 11th out of the 15 songs in the Eurovision semi-final "Liar" was in. [16] ESC Beat's Doron Lahav ranked the song 17th overall;Lahav admitted that although he thought it had high staging potential,the song itself did not have anything "innovative". [17] In another ranking, Vulture 's Jon O'Brien ranked the song 24th overall,deeming it a "watered-down version of the ethnopop banger that reversed its Eurovision fortunes",referring to Eleni Foureira's "Fuego". Cyprus' broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), announced its intent to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on 19 May 2023. Originally, CyBC planned to organize a national final to select its entrant; [19] however, the show that was going to be used, Fame Story , was a Greek television show. Due to this, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), the Greek public broadcaster, threatened to withdraw from the European Broadcasting Union if no action was taken. [20] As a result, CyBC changed to an internal selection. [21] Kapsis was later announced as the representative on 25 September. [8]
The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 took place at the Malmö Arena in Malmö, Sweden, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 7 and 9 May and the final on 11 May 2024. During the allocation draw on 30 January 2024, Cyprus was drawn to compete in the first semi-final, performing in the first half of the show. [22] Kapsis was later drawn to perform to open the semi-final, behind Serbia's Teya Dora. [23]
The Eurovision performance was choreographed by Kelly Sweeney and Guy Amir, [24] along with Dan Shipton being appointed as creative director for the performance. [25] Kapsis performed with four other dancers, including Theo B. Koefoed, Thomas Hegnet, Sebastian Laurentius Nielsen, and Martin Daugaard. [26] The Eurovision performance featured Kapsis wearing a white-coloured crop top and trousers, with a mixture of red and green LEDs serving as the background. [27] [28] A background displaying swirls of water circles was also shown. [29] "Liar" finished in sixth, scoring 67 points and securing a position in the grand final. [30] [31]
Kapsis performed a repeat of her performance in the grand final on 11 May. The song was performed 20th in the grand final, ahead of Armenia's Ladaniva and before Switzerland's Nemo Mettler. [32] After the results were announced, Kapsis finished in 15th with 78 points, with a split score of 34 points from juries and 44 points from televoting. [33] Regarding the former, the song did not receive any set of the maximum 12 points; the highest any country gave it was 10 points, with it coming from Greece. One set of 12 points was awarded to the song from televoting; the set also came from Greece. [34]

Cyprus has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 40 times since making its debut in 1981. Cyprus' first entry was the group Island, who finished sixth. The country's best result in the contest is a second-place finish with Eleni Foureira in 2018.
France has participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest seven times, debuting in Lillehammer, Norway, at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004. France Télévisions, a member organisation of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), is responsible for the selection process of their participation. The first representative to participate for the nation was Thomas Pontier with the song "Si on voulait bien", which finished in sixth place out of eighteen participating entries, achieving a score of seventy-eight points. France did not participate after 2004, and made its return to the contest in 2018, 14 years later. France has won the contest on three occasions: in 2020, with Valentina and the song "J'imagine", in 2022, with Lissandro and the song "Oh Maman!", and in 2023, with Zoé Clauzure and the song "Cœur".
Georgia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 16 times since making its debut in 2007. Georgia initially planned to participate in 2009, but later withdrew after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) demanded it to re-write its song which made reference to the then-Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin. Eleni Foureira is an Albanian-born Greek singer and dancer. She began her music career in 2007 as a member of the Greek girl group Mystique, pursuing a solo career after the group disbanded in 2009. She has released five studio albums since.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 was the 64th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Tel Aviv, Israel, following the country's victory at the 2018 contest with the song "Toy" by Netta. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC/Kan), the contest was held at Expo Tel Aviv, and consisted of two semi-finals on 14 and 16 May, and a final on 18 May 2019. The three live shows were presented by Israeli television presenters Erez Tal, Assi Azar and Lucy Ayoub, and Israeli model Bar Refaeli.
Greece participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. The Greek broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) internally selected Victor Vernicos to represent the country with the song "What They Say", which he composed himself. Vernicos was announced as the artist on 30 January 2023, while the song was presented to the public on 12 March. The entry selection process was subject to a legal challenge by second-place candidate Melissa Mantzoukis; however, Vernicos' participation was ultimately allowed to continue.

The Cypriot national broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) originally intended to select its entrant through the fifth season of the reality show Fame Story, produced in collaboration with the Greek channel Star. However, this plan was later cancelled after the Greek broadcaster ERT raised objections to the Cypriot selection process being aired in Greece by another broadcaster, and CyBC ultimately reverted to an internal selection for its entrant.

"(Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi" is a collaborative song by Estonian hip hop group 5miinust and Estonian folk duo Puuluup, released on 8 December 2023 by Universal Music Oy. It was written by members of both groups. The song represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed 20th with 37 points.
"Ramonda" is a song by Serbian singer-songwriter Teodora Pavlovska, known by her stage name, Teya Dora. The song was released on 22 January 2024 by PGP-RTS and was written by Pavlovska, Luka Jovanović, and Andrijano Kadović. It represented Serbia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed 17th with 54 points.
"Unforgettable" is a song by Norwegian music duo Marcus & Martinus, released as a single on 2 March 2024 through Universal. The song was written by the duo alongside with Jimmy "Joker" Thörnfeldt, Joy Deb and Linnea Deb. It represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 after winning Melodifestivalen 2024, and finished in 9th place at the grand final with 174 points.
"Firefighter" is a song by Georgian singer Nutsa Buzaladze, released on 11 March 2024 by Stop Talking. It was written by Ada Satka and Darko Dimitrov, and represented Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed 21st in the grand final with 34 points. In the process, the song became the first Georgian entry to qualify for the grand final since 2016.
"Jako" is a song by French-Armenian world music duo Ladaniva. The song was originally released on 29 September 2023 on the duo's debut self-titled album as a track, and was written by Audrey Leclercq, Jaklin Baghdasaryan, and Louis Thomas. It represented Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where it placed in 8th at the grand final with 183 points.
"Özünlə apar" is a song by Azerbaijani singer Fahree featuring Ilkin Dovlatov. It was written by Fahree and four other writers, and was released on 15 March 2024 by Beat Music. "Özünlə apar" represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
