Tali Golergant [a] (born 26 November 2000), [1] known mononymously as Tali (stylized in all caps), is an Israeli-born Luxembourgish singer, songwriter, actress and vocal coach. She represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Fighter". [2]

Early and personal life

Golergant was born in Israel to a Peruvian Jewish father and an Israeli mother. Following her father's work in banking, [3] she moved with her family, when she was only 6 months old, across Chile, Argentina and other countries, until finally settling in Limpertsberg, Luxembourg, where she resided for ten years. [1] [4] She began playing the piano at the age of 7, and began singing, songwriting and acting in theatre at the age of 12. [5] She studied at the International School of Luxembourg, before moving to New York City to study musical theatre at Marymount Manhattan College. [6] She lives there as of January 2024. [7]

Golergant is fluent in Hebrew, Spanish, French and English and is able to communicate in German and understand Luxembourgish. [8] [9] [10]

Career

Golergant released her debut single at the age of 16, followed in 2021 by her debut EP Lose You. Along with her own band, she toured local New York venues including Rockwood Music Hall, Mercury Lounge, Arlene's Grocery, and Delancey Street. Golergant has been a featured vocalist on other works, including "Carry Me Home" with Max Bartos. [11] In addition, Golergant pursued a career as a stage actress, portraying Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof , Sue Snell in Carrie , and Éponine in Les Misérables , among others; she has also starred in the independent short film Agua. In December 2023, Golergant was revealed as one of the eight finalists of the Luxembourg Song Contest , the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. [14] It was later revealed on 9 January 2024 that she would perform the song "Fighter". [15] She went on to win the selection, earning the right to be the first representative for the country at the contest since 1993; [13] she qualified from the semi-final on 7 May 2024 [16] and ultimately finished 13th in the final of 11 May.

Artistry

Golergant describes her music as a blend of pop, indie and R&B. She cites Lizzy McAlpine, Sara Bareilles and Lady Gaga among her influences. [12]

Germany has officially participated in every Eurovision Song Contest since its inaugural edition in 1956, except in 1996 when its entry did not qualify past the audio-only pre-selection round, and consequently was not seen in the broadcast final and does not count as one of Germany's 67 appearances. The Luxembourgish national broadcaster, RTL Lëtzebuerg (RTL), participates in the contest representing the country. The nation participated in all but one event between 1956 and 1993, only missing the 1959 contest. After finishing among the bottom seven countries in 1993, Luxembourg was relegated and prevented from competing in 1994. The nation declined to return to the contest in 1995, and would make no further appearances over the next three decades. The country returned to the event for the first time in 31 years in 2024.

Monaco has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 24 times since its debut in 1959. The country's only win in the contest came in 1971, with "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" performed by Séverine. Israel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, having internally selected Eden Alene as their representative. She was due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Feker Libi" before the event's cancellation. Her entry for 2021, "Set Me Free", was chosen during the national selection competition HaShir Shelanu L'Eurovizion organised by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation.

Israel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. The Israeli broadcaster Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC/Kan) internally selected Noa Kirel to represent the country with the song "Unicorn", which was written by Kirel along with Doron Medalie, May Sfadia, and Yinon Yahel. Kirel was announced as the Israeli representative on 10 August 2022, while the song, "Unicorn", was presented to the public on 8 March 2023.

Luxembourg was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Fighter", written by Ana Zimmer, Dario Faini, Manon Romiti, and Silvio Lisbonne, and performed by Tali. Self-described as a song about how humans suffer and persevere through struggles, the song represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 – the first Luxembourgish entry in the contest in over 30 years, with the country last competing in 1993. At the contest, it finished in 13th place at the grand final with 103 points.
