Pernem is a northmost administrative region or sub-district in North Goa.It acts as the Gateway of Goa from Maharashtra side. It is also the name of the town of Pernem, which is its headquarters. It has a Municipal Council. Geographically, Pernem is surrounded by Sawantwadi sub-district (Maharashtra State) on East, Arabian Sea on West, Bardez and Bicholim sub-district on south and Sawantwadi sub-district (Maharashtra State) on north.The two rivers which decide the boundary of this sub-district are Terekhol River and Chapora River. Terekhol river acts as a border of Maharashtra and Goa while Chapora river acts as a border of Pernem sub-district and Bardez sub-district.

Maharashtra State in western India

Maharashtra is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan plateau. It is the second-most populous state and third-largest state by area in India. Spread over 307,713 km2 (118,809 sq mi), it is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, the Indian states of Karnataka and Goa to the south, Telangana and Chhattisgarh to the east, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to the north, and the Indian union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the north west. History

Pernem is counted as belonging to one of the two Goan sub-regions, the Novas Conquistas, or New Conquests. It was taken over, lost and finally regained from the Rajas of Sawantwadi, a state on Goa's northern border that allied sometimes with the Portuguese and sometimes with the Marathas. (The Kingdom of Sawantwadi was integrated into the district of Ratnagiri after 1947 and is now part of the district of Sindhudurg). After the capture of Goa by Indian Armed Forces from Portuguese, it became part of Union Territory of Goa.

Novas Conquistas

The Novas Conquistas are a group of seven administrative districts or concelhos of mainland Goa in the colonial Portuguese India era. They were added onto Goa in the 18th century, a comparatively later date than the original three concelhos that make up the Velhas Conquistas.

Ratnagiri City in Maharashtra, India

Pernem is the Portuguese spelling (the m only makes the e nasal). The name in Konkani Pedne, and inhabitants are called Pednecar in Konkani. The surname Pednekar used by some Konkanastha Brahmans may indicate their origins in Pernem.

Location

The Konkan Railway passes through Pernem, and there is a railway station called Pernem at a distance of about 4 km east from the town. The proposed Mopa International Airport is situated at Mopa in Pernem sub-district. National Highway 17 (NH-17), which connects Mumbai (Bombay) and Goa, passes through Pernem (bypassed at Malpem)

Konkan Railway railway corporation in India

The Konkan Railway is operated by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, headquartered at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. The first passenger train ran on Konkan railway tracks on 20 March 1993 between Udupi and Mangalore. During its initial years of operation in the mountainous Konkan region, a spate of accidents prompted Konkan Railway to investigate new technologies. The anti-collision devices, the Sky Bus and RORO are a few of the innovations from Konkan Railway. It was the missing link between Mumbai, Maharashtra and Mangalore, Karnataka and the southwestern coastal cities of India. The 741 km (461 mi) line connects Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka states in India. The first train on the completed track was flagged off on January 26, 1998, the Republic Day of India.

Mopa Airport airport in Mopa, Goa, India

Mopa Airport is an under-construction greenfield airport being built at Mopa in Pernem taluka, North Goa district in the State of Goa, India. GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV), will develop the airport. The Rs. 3000 Crore airport will be built under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) model in four phases, with the first phase, costing a total of Rs 1,500 crore, expected to be completed by financial year 2019-20. The concession period for the Greenfield project will be 40 years with a possible extension of another 20 years through a bid process. The airport will cater to 4.4 million passengers in the first phase and 13.1 million by the end of the fourth phase. The project will operate on hybrid till model with 30% cross subsidy and the concession offers 232 acres of land for commercial city side development for a period of 60 years.

As of the 2011 India census, [1] Pernem had a population of 70726 with gender ratio of 959 females to 1000 males.However, the child ratio (0–6 years) is much lower i.e. 911.The overall Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Pernem has an average literacy rate of 82.6%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 84% and female literacy is 75.1%. In Pernem, 9.1% of the population is under 6 years of age. The total urbanization level is 39.7 percent

Transport

Pernem sub-district is well connected through road and Konkan railway. Pernem railway station is the first railway station in Goa while coming from Mumbai. Mandovi Express, Konkan Kanya Express, Goa Sampark Kranti Express and Margao - Sawantwadi Road passenger (Train No.50107/50108 halts here. NH-17 passes through this area which connects it to Mumbai and Mangalore.

The Mumbai-Madgaon Mandovi Express is a train which operates between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Madgaon Junction, the main railway station in Goa and is currently operated by the Central Railway and the Konkan Railway. It runs daily with a total travel time of 11 hours and 50 minutes. It has 18 stops on its route. It covers a distance of 580 km. This train is named after the Mandovi River.

Konkan Kanya Express

The Konkan Kanya Express is a Superfast Indian Railways train running between Mumbai and Margao on the Konkan Railway route.

Goa Sampark Kranti Express is one of the most important trains among the Sampark Kranti Express Trains series operated on Indian Railways by the Northern Railway Delhi Division between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Margao, a town in the Indian state of Goa The train is extended to Chandigarh similar to Kerala Sampark Kranti recently.

Culture and Religion

Igreja de São José

A Chapel in Pernem was built in 1852 by the Portuguese after their successful Novo Conquistas campaign. It was elevated into a Parish on January 2, 1855. St. Joseph Church, Pernem was rebuilt in 1864. The Parish was renovated in 2002. The Parish has 5 substations constituted of 11 Small Christian Communities. Currently, Fr. Camilo Simoes is appointed as the Parish Priest.

Others

Pedne hosts a very popular annual fair on Kojagiri poornima at Shri Bhagavati Temple premises. Pernem has contributed immensely to the cultural and literary scene of Goa.

Tourism

This sub-district plays a major part in tourism of North Goa District. Famous places are Kerim or Querim Beach, Arambol Beach, Terekhol Fort, Mandrem beach, Ashwem Beach, Morjim Beach, Alorna Fort (near Alorna panchakroshi).

Also near to malpem on NH-17 there is a beautiful temple known as Shri Mulveer Temple.

Casa de Hospides

Also called the House of Hospitality (in English), this building was built by the Portuguese for the Visconde de Pernem (Viscount of Pernem) - the Deshprabhu family. It was basically a Guest house for Europeans visiting the northern frontier of Goa. After the capture of Goa by India, the former caretakers of the house - the Deshprabhus - took ownership of the building, and reside in it to this date.

Kudal city in Maharashtra, India

Kudal is a census town in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, India. It is situated on Karli River in southwest Maharashtara. Kudal is the fourth largest town in Sindhudurg after Sawantwadi,Malvan and Kankavli. As of 2011, the population is 16,015. Kudal supports one MIDC area. Kudal railway station is located on the Konkan Railway route and connects the town with Mumbai on the north and Mangalore on the south. Sindhudurg Fort

Sindhudurg Fort is a historical fort that occupies an islet in the Arabian Sea, just off the coast of Maharashtra in Western India. The fort was made by Shivaji Maharaj. The fortress lies on the shore of Malvan town of Sindhudurg District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, 450 kilometres (280 mi) south of Mumbai. It is a protected monument.

Chapora Fort human settlement in India

Chapora Fort, located in Bardez, Goa, rises high above the Chapora River. Before the Portuguese arrived in Goa in 1510, this location was the site of another fort. The fort changed hands several times after Portuguese acquired Bardez. Trying to end the Portuguese rule in Goa, Prince Akbar joined his father’s enemies, the Marathas in 1683 and made this place his base camp. It became the northern outpost of the Old Conquests.
