Pollo Campestre (literally "Countryside Chicken") is a fast food restaurant chain located in El Salvador. The restaurant specializes in serving fried chicken.

History

Pollo Campestre was founded in San Miguel in 1987 by Mario Antonio Romero Salgado and Gloria Santos Guzmán. [1] The couple established the company with only 150 colóns (equivalent to 17.14 US dollars) [2] to support themselves and their three children during the Salvadoran Civil War. [3] [4]

Pollo Campestre's primary dish is fried chicken. Other food items served include eggs, beans, fried plantains, nachos, and cheese. Common drinks include coffee, orange juice, and sodas. Vanilla pancakes topped which whipped cream and strawberries are also offered as deserts. [5]

The restaurant has run a promotional campaign known as "Campestremanía 2x1" for three days in February 2016 and September 2020. The promotion offered customers two meals for the price of one. [6] [7] It promoted the 2019 Ilopango airshow by selling tickets at some locations. [8] It has opened new locations, along with many other companies, in three new large shopping malls located in Nejapa in 2018, Apopa in 2020, and Aguilares in 2022. [9] [10] [11]

Corporate affairs

As of 2021, the restaurant had 2,000 employees working in 53 locations across El Salvador. [12] Pollo Campestre is owned by Grupo Campestre, S.A de C.V., which also owns eight other companies: Avícola Campestre, Panadería Sinaí, Agrocampestre, Agropecuaria La Laguna, Recursos Humanos Excelentes de El Salvador, Hotelería y Turismo, and Alimentos para Llevar. [13] Pollo Campestre receives 2,000 chickens per day from Avícola Campestre. [2]

The restaurant describes itself as being "100% Salvadoran". [14] Its mascot is an anthropomorphic chicken named "Pepe Pollo". [15]

Pollo Campestre is an official sponsor of the Salvadoran football club C.D. Platense Municipal Zacatecoluca which competes in the Primera División. [16]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rutilio Grande</span> Salvadorean Jesuit Priest and Community Leader

Rutilio Grande García, SJ was a Jesuit priest in El Salvador. He was assassinated in 1977, along with two other Salvadorans. He was the first priest assassinated before the Salvadoran Civil War started and a close friend of Archbishop Óscar Romero. After his death, Romero changed his silence and urged the military junta to investigate the murder. His beatification, through his status as a martyr, was approved by Pope Francis on 21 February 2020, with the ceremony being held on 22 January 2022.

Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez Avendaño was Salvadoran military officer and politician. He was one of the leaders of the 1979 Salvadoran coup d'état which overthrew President General Carlos Humberto Romero and established the Revolutionary Government Junta of El Salvador, ending 48 years of exclusive military rule in the country. The coup started the 12-year-long Salvadoran Civil War which lasted until 1992.

General elections will be held in El Salvador in February and March 2024. In the first round on 4 February 2024, Salvadorans will elect the president, vice president, and all 84 deputies of the Legislative Assembly. In the second round on 3 March 2024, they will elect all 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) and all 262 mayors of the country's municipalities. It will be the first time that presidential and legislative elections occur concurrently since the 1994 general election.

The 2022–23 season will be El Salvador's Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño. The season will be split into two championships Apertura 2022 and Clausura 2023. The champions of the Apertura and Clausura play the direct promotion playoff every year. The winner of that series ascends to Primera División de Fútbol de El Salvador.
