Pumpkin Queen is a title awarded at many North American beauty contests held in autumn. The contests to choose a pumpkin queen typically occur during festivals. At some festivals, a variety of contestants, from babies to boys, compete for other pumpkin titles. These include "Miss Pumpkin", "Pumpkin Princess", "Mister Pumpkin", and "Pumpkin Seed". In fiction, the title may also refer to the ruler of an autumnal fantasy world.

History

Pumpkin festivals in various American states include pageants to select a pumpkin queen. The Circleville Pumpkin Show is the oldest pumpkin show in Ohio; it has been held annually since 1903. The festival draws large crowds of up to a half million people. [1] Beginning in 1933, the festival began selecting a Miss Pumpkin. [2] [3] The festival was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival was also cancelled three other times related to both World War I and World War II. [4]

For fifty years the town of Spring Hope, North Carolina, has held a contest to select the Spring Hope Miss Pumpkin Queen in conjunction with the Spring Hope National Pumpkin Festival. [5] Since 1964 Barnesville, Ohio, hosts the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, where they also have a queen pageant. [6] In Rutland County, Vermont a Pumpkin Queen is crowned each year, and they have hosted the Halloween Pumpkin Princess Tea and Pageant since 1964. [7]

The West Virginia Pumpkin Festival selects a Pumpkin Festival Queen, Teen, Ms, MRS, and they choose a variety of other contestants to hold pumpkin titles from babies to boys. [8] In Confluence, Pennsylvania, they host a PumpkinFest Queen Pageant at the event which they call PumpkinFest. [9] Beginning in 1971 Spring Hope, North Carolina, hosts a Pumpkin Festival where they crown a Pumpkin Queen. [10]

Pumpkin Princess

Some festivals involve younger contestants and confer the title of Pumpkin Princess. Morton, Illinois, hosts the Morton Pumpkin Festival annually and has given their city the title of "Pumpkin Capital of the World." [1] Each year they crown a Pumpkin Princess at the festival. The pageant is only open to children between five and six years old. [11] The pageant in Confluence, Pennsylvania, gives titles to young children and babies with titles like Pumpkin Tot and Mister Pumpkin. [8] The Spring Hope, North Carolina, Pumpkin Festival crowns a Baby Pumpkin Seed during their Pumpkin Festival. [10]

In fiction

A number of works of fiction have titles which include a Pumpkin Queen or Pumpkin Princess. Long Live the Pumpkin Queen is a book by Shea Ernshaw about a young girl who is crowned Pumpkin Queen: Queen of Halloween Town. [12] The Pumpkin Queen is a short film directed by Angie Hansen. The film is about a scientist who wants revenge against the Monroe County Pumpkin Queen. [13]

Miss USA is an American beauty pageant that has been held annually since 1952 to select the entrant from United States in the Miss Universe pageant. The Miss Universe Organization operated both pageants, as well as Miss Teen USA, until 2020, when the organization announced it was licensing operation of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants to Crystle Stewart, Miss USA for 2008 prior to her suspension in October 2022, thus returning the said pageants to the Miss Universe Organization.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show is an annual show held in Circleville, Ohio, about 30 miles (48 km) south of the state capital of Columbus. The festival, which is held to celebrate local agriculture, is headed up by the Circleville Pumpkin Show Corporation. Considered to be the biggest festival in the United States dedicated to the pumpkin, it is billed as The Greatest Free Show On Earth. Attendance has topped 400,000 for the four-day event, which is free to enter.

A pumpkin festival is a type of annual festival celebrating the autumn harvest of pumpkins. They are typically celebrated around October in the Northern Hemisphere.

Miss'd America is an annual drag pageant held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. It was founded in the early 1990s as a spoof of the Miss America pageant. It ran through 2005, took a five-year hiatus, and resumed operation in 2010. Contestants compete in four categories: swimsuit, evening gown, interview and talent, with the winner receiving $5,000. Part of the proceeds from each edition of the pageant are donated to local LGBT charities and initiatives. The event is produced by Rich Helfant, directed by Mark Dahl, and hosted by Carson Kressley. The current reigning Miss'd America is Freeda Kulo, who was crowned on September 9, 2023.

Miss Grand Ghana is a Ghanaian female beauty pageant, founded in 2020 by Accra-based pageant organizer Legacy Pageants Limited, chaired by Sandy Amissah. The winners of the contest represent the country at its parent international stage, Miss Grand International, while the rest of its finalists are sent to compete on other international platforms. In 2022, the license of Miss Grand Ghana was taken over by Abena Appiah, a former Miss Grand International, who has owned and run the contest annually since then.
