Rhyddings (formerly Rhyddings High School and then Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School) is a mixed secondary school located in Oswaldtwistle in the English county of Lancashire. [1] The current headteacher is Andrew Williams, who took over in September 2018.
A new “hi tech” building for the school opened in March 2003, which replaced the old annex which had been in used since the 1920s. [2]
The former headteacher was Paul Trickett, who replaced Barry Burke, who was appointed principal of Manchester Health Academy in July 2008. [3] Mr Burke took over from his predecessor, Joyce Moore, in January 1998. Mrs Moore began as headteacher in 1974, being the first woman headteacher at a mixed school in Lancashire. [4] [5]
In December 2013, it was reported that a quarter of teachers faced redundancy, due to more schools competing for fewer pupils. [6] In June 2014, Trevor Ainsworth, the deputy headteacher, announced his retirement from the school, after spending his entire teaching career in Rhyddings, starting in 1977. [7]
The school was inspected by Ofsted in 2014 and judged Good. [8]
In January 2016, the school was named one of "329 Failing Secondary Schools". [9] [ better source needed ].
As of 2021, its most recent inspection was in 2018, when it was judged Requires Improvement. [10]
Previously a community school administered by Lancashire County Council, [11] in June 2022 Rhyddings converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the LET Education Trust. [12]
Rhyddings offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. [13]
Hyndburn is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. Its council is based in Accrington, the largest town, and the borough also covers the outlying towns of Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Oswaldtwistle and Rishton. The borough was created in 1974 and takes its name from the River Hyndburn. It had a population of 80,734 at the 2011 Census. Oswaldtwistle is a town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, England, 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Blackburn, contiguous with Accrington and Church. The town has a rich industrial heritage, being home to James Hargreaves, inventor of the spinning jenny, and Robert "Parsley" Peel of calico printing fame. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the town and was responsible for the export of much of the area's cotton produce.
Burscough Priory Academy is an Academy in Burscough, Lancashire, England. Stanley High School is a coeducational secondary school located in the resort town of Southport, Merseyside in North West England. It opened in 1952, with 300 pupils, and was named after Edward Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby.
