Rosa 'Alpine Sunset' is an apricot blend hybrid tea rose developed by Roger Pawsey of Cants of Colchester, Essex in 1973. The cultivar was introduced into Great Britain in 1974.
Cants of Colchester is the oldest firm of commercial rose growers in Great Britain. The company was founded by Benjamin Cant in 1765 under the name, 'Benjamin R. Cant & Sons' and was located in Mile End, now a northern suburb of Colchester. The nursery originally sold a variety of plants, seeds, bulbs and trees. With the rise in popularity of roses in the mid-1800s, Benjamin R. Cant (1827-1900), initiated a rose breeding program at the company in 1875. By 1880, Cant had become an award-winning rose exhibitor in England. [1]
Cant's nephew, Frank Cant (1857-1928), split from the family firm and established his own nursery in Colchester in the early 1880s. The two Cant families became fierce competitors. The rivalry between the two nurseries lasted until the 1960s, when their descendants decided to merge the two family businesses into one company. [2] The 'Benjamin R Cant & Sons' of Mile End Colchester and 'Frank Cant & Company' of Stanway, Essex became the 'Cants of Colchester' under the leadership of Cant family descendant, Roger Pawsey. [3] Cants of Colchester has introduced several popular rose varieties, including Rosa 'Just Joey', Rosa 'Alpine Sunset' and Rosa 'Goldstar'. [4] [5]
Pawsey developed the new rose variety, 'Alpine Sunset' in 1973 from hybrid tea roses, Dr. A.J. Verhage and Irish Gold (also known as 'Grandpa Dickson'). 'Alpine Sunset' was used to develop two child plants: Rosa 'Pretty Lady' (1997) and Rosa 'Yardley Baroque' (before 1997). [6]
'Alpine Sunset' is an upright, compact shrub, 2 to 4 ft (60–120 cm) in height, with a 2 to 3 ft spread (60–91 cm). The rose has a large, cupped, full bloom form. Blooms have an average diameter of 4-5 in (10–13 cm) with 30 or more petals and a strong fragrance. The plant blooms in flushes from summer to fall. Flower color is an apricot blend, often displaying peach with an apricot reverse. [7] The plant thrives in USDA zones 7b and warmer. [8]
Rosa 'Anne Harkness' is an apricot floribunda rose cultivar developed by Jack Harkness in 1979 and introduced into Great Britain in 1980. The rose makes an outstanding cut flower and is exceptionally long lasting in water.
Rosa'Bridge of Sighs' is an apricot climbing rose cultivar, developed by Jack Harkness and introduced into Great Britain by Harkness Roses in 2000.
Rosa 'English Miss' is a Floribunda rose bred by Roger Pawsey of Cants of Colchester, Essex in 1977. The cultivar was introduced into Great Britain in 1979. The plant is a compact, bushy shrub with light pink camellia-like flowers. It is disease resistant and blooms continuously from June to mid-October.
Rosa'Elina' is a light yellow hybrid tea rose bred by Patrick Dickson of Northern Ireland in 1983. The variety was developed from the white floribunda 'Nana Mouskouri' and the apricot hybrid tea 'Lolita'.
Rosa 'Charles Austin' is an apricot shrub rose cultivar bred and introduced by David Austin in England in 1973. The rose was hybridised by crossing the English rose 'Chaucer' with the pink Hybrid Tea 'Aloha' and is named after the breeder's father. It was one of the early English roses.
Rosa'Buff Beauty' is an apricot Hybrid musk rose cultivar, bred by Ann Bentall and introduced into Great Britain in 1939. Bentall and her husband, John Bentall, inherited the rose fields of acclaimed rose breeder, the Reverend Joseph Pemberton after his death in 1926. The rose was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
Rosa 'Diamond Jubilee' is a light yellow Hybrid tea rose developed in the United States in 1947 by Gene Boerner. The cultivar was named All-America Rose Selections (AARS) winner in 1948.
Rosa 'Sunset Celebration',, is a hybrid tea rose cultivar bred by Gareth Fryer. It was introduced into the United States by Weeks Roses in 1994 as 'Sunset Celebration'. It is also commonly known under the marketing name, 'Warm Wishes'. The rose was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1998.
Rosa 'Blueberry Hill',, is a floribunda rose cultivar, bred by Tom Carruth, and introduced into the United States by Weeks Rose Growers in 1997. The plant was created from hybrid tea, 'Crystalline' and floribunda, 'Playgirl'. The cultivar won a Portland Gold Medal in 2002.
Rosa 'Just Joey',, is an apricot blend hybrid tea rose cultivar, bred by Roger Pawsey and named in honor of his wife, Joey. The plant was introduced into the United Kingdom by Cants of Colchester rose growers in 1972. 'Just Joey' was inducted into the Rose Hall of Fame as "World's Favourite Rose" in 1994.
