SS Kaisar-i-Hind was a P&O ocean liner that was launched in Scotland in 1914 and scrapped in England in 1938. Kaisar-i-Hind means "Empress of India". She was the second P&O ship to bear this name. The first was launched in 1878 and scrapped in 1898. [1]
In the First World War Kaisar-i-Hind was a troopship. She survived five torpedo attacks by U-boats.
Caird & Company of Greenock on the River Clyde built the ship as yard number 327. When a Miss Edith Cole launched her on 28 June 1914, the ship still lacked a name. [2] The ship was named during fitting out, and made her sea trials on 1 October 1914. She cost £363,176, which at the time was the highest price P&O had ever paid for a ship. [3]
Kaisar-i-Hind's registered length was 520.0 ft (158.5 m), her beam was 61.2 ft (18.7 m), and her depth was 33.1 ft (10.1 m). Her tonnages were 11,430 GRT and 5,989 NRT. [4] Her holds had space for 222,980 cubic feet (6,314 m3) of cargo. She had berths for 648 passengers: 315 in first class, and 333 in second class. Each passenger cabin was cooled by its own electric fan. She had a crew of 332: 138 Europeans and 194 lascars. [5]
The ship had twin screws, each driven by a quadruple-expansion steam engine. The combined power of her twin engines was rated at 1,964 NHP [4] or 14,000 ihp, and gave her a speed of 18+1⁄2 knots (34 km/h). [3]
P&O registered Kaisar-i-Hind at Greenock. Her United Kingdom official number was 128653 and her code letters were JGTR. [6] She was equipped with wireless telegraphy. Her call sign was MSI. [7]
The ship's route was from Tilbury to Bombay (now Mumbai) via Plymouth. On her maiden voyage she steamed from Plymouth to Bombay in 17 days, 20 hours and 52 minutes, setting a new record. [3]
The First World War began two months before Kaisar-i-Hind entered service. For much of the war she was a troopship. She carried British, Indian and French troops, mainly to the Mediterranean. [5] For trooping service her number of lifeboats was greatly increased, with a second row of boats superimposed on either side of her boat deck. [2]
During the war she survived five torpedo attacks. The first was on 23 March 1916, between Crete and Malta, when she was carrying the Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford, and his family. The second was on 17 June 1917, west of Gibraltar. The third was on 17 July 2017, southwest of the Isles of Scilly. The fourth was on 18 December 1917, west of Gibraltar. In each attack, the U-boat commanders seem to have under-estimated her speed, as Kaisar-i-Hind was faster than other P&O ships of her era. [5]
On 22 September 1918 the ship was attacked by a U-boat for the fifth time. According to official records the torpedo missed again. According to P&O tradition a torpedo did hit her this time, and dented her plates, but failed to detonate. [5]
On 15 October 1918 T. E. Lawrence embarked on the ship at Port Said. He disembarked at Taranto in Italy, whence he continued his journey home by train as far as Le Havre, and then by ferry to England, where he arrived on 24 October. [8] In 1919 the ship continued trooping; repatriating troops to Australia and India. She returned to civilian service in 1920. [5]
In 1921 Cunard Line chartered Kaisar-i-Hind for at least one round trip between Southampton and New York, for which she was unofficially renamed Emperor of India. The American Tourist Agency chartered her for a cruise to Norway, but her design for service in a hot climate proved unsuitable. During the cruise an explosion in her stokehold killed three lascar stokers and badly scalded four engineers. [5]
In 1922 Kaisar-i-Hind returned to P&O service. [3] in 1926 she was refitted. [2] In 1929 P&O changed transferred her to its Far East route. David Niven, then newly commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry, sailed on her from Tilbury to Malta. [5]
By 1930 Kaisar-i-Hind's call sign was GLVN. [6] By 1934 this had superseded her code letters.
On 22 May 1930 the ship lost her port screw in the Red Sea between Aden and Port Said. The damage was inspected by a diver, after which she completed her voyage to Tilbury at reduced speed. On 1 November 1931 the ship dragged her anchor at Malta, colliding with the Italian ship Città di Trieste and sinking several lighters. [5]
On 16 May 1932 the French liner Georges Philippar caught fire in the Indian Ocean. Kaisar-i-Hind was one of several ships that went to her aid. Kaisar-i-Hind patrolled in search of lifeboats and liferafts believed to be making for the coast, but found none. [5]
On 1 July 1932 Kaisar-i-Hind called at Tangier. She was the first P&O ship ever to serve the port. [5]
On 21 April 1938 the ship reached Plymouth flying a paying-off pennant 72 feet (22 m) long. The next day she reached King George V Dock, London, for the last time. On 26 April Hughes Bolckow bought her for £28,500 for scrap. On 29 May she reached Blyth, Northumberland, where she was broken up. [5]
USS Culgoa (AF-3) was a steam cargo liner. She was launched in England in 1889 for Blue Anchor Line, who ran her between England and Australia. In 1898 she was bought for the United States Navy as a stores ship. She served in the Philippine–American War; the Great White Fleet; and the First World War. In January 1909 she took part in the relief operation after the 1908 Messina earthquake. To date, she is the only US Navy ship to have been named Culgoa. In 1922 the United States Department of the Navy sold her to a civilian owner, who renamed her Champlain. She was scrapped in the United States in 1924.
The S class was a class of 67 destroyers ordered for the Royal Navy in 1917 under the 11th and 12th Emergency War Programmes. They saw active service in the last months of the First World War and in the Russian and Irish Civil Wars during the early 1920s. Most were relegated to the reserve by the mid-1920s and subsequently scrapped under the terms of the London Naval Treaty. Eleven survivors saw much action during the Second World War.
SS Akaroa was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1914 in Ireland as Euripides for Aberdeen Line. When new, she was the largest ship in the Aberdeen Line fleet.
RMS Ophir was an Orient Steam Navigation Company steam ocean liner that was built in 1891 and scrapped in 1922. Her regular route was between London and Sydney via the Suez Canal, Colombo and Melbourne.
USS Zeelandia was an ocean liner that was built in Scotland in 1910 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1936. She was the largest ship in the Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd (KHL) fleet from 1910 until the liners Gelria and Tubantia were completed in 1913 and 1914. She was USS Zeelandia from April 1918 until October 1919, when she was a United States Navy troopship.
USS Charlton Hall (ID-1359) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1907 and served in the merchant fleets of the United Kingdom, United States and Greece. She served in the United States Navy in 1918. She was renamed Atlantis and then Anastasis in 1930. She was scrapped in China in 1934.
RMS Magdalena was a British steamship that was built in 1889 as a Royal Mail Ship and ocean liner for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. In the First World War she served as the troop ship HMT Magdalena. After a long and successful civilian and military career she was scrapped in 1923.
MV Dumana was a British cargo liner that was laid down as Melma, but launched in 1921 as Dumana. The British India Steam Navigation Company (BI) owned her, and ran her on routes between London and India.
SS Erinpura was an E-class ocean liner of the British India Steam Navigation Company, built in 1911. She was the first British India ship built for Eastern service to be fitted with radio. She served in both World Wars. Enemy action in 1943 sank her in the Mediterranean Sea with great loss of life.
SS Mantola was a British India Steam Navigation Company (BI) steamship that was built in 1916 and sunk by a German U-boat in 1917. She belonged to BI's "M" class of cargo liners. She was carrying an estimated 600,000 ounces of silver bullion when she was sunk. In 2017, 526 bars of silver were salvaged from the wreck and taken to the United Kingdom, in circumstances that remain undisclosed.
HMS Perth was a steamship that was built in Scotland in 1915, renamed Lafonia in 1946 and Valfiorita in 1950, and scrapped in Italy in 1962. She was designed as a coastal passenger and cargo liner, but was completed in the First World War as an armed boarding steamer for the Royal Navy. In the Second World War she was converted into an ocean boarding vessel, and served also as a convoy rescue ship.
SS Ebani was a cargo steamship that was built in England in 1912 and scrapped in Belgium in 1950. She was renamed Maristella in 1938, Rio Atuel in 1941, and reverted to Maristella in 1946.
SS Prinz Adalbert was a twin-screw cargo liner that was launched in Germany in 1902 for Hamburg America Line (HAPAG). In 1914 the United Kingdom Admiralty seized her and renamed her Prince. In 1916 she was renamed Princetown. On 1917 she was transferred to the Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique and renamed Alesia. Later in 1917 a U-boat sank her.
RMS Asturias was a Royal Mail Steam Packet Company ocean liner that was built in Ireland in 1908 and scrapped in Japan in 1933. She was a Royal Mail Ship until 1914, when on the eve of the First World War the British Admiralty requisitioned her as a hospital ship.
SS Bungaree was a steam cargo liner. She was launched in England in 1889 for Blue Anchor Line, who ran her between England and Australia. The Quebec Steamship Company bought her in 1903 and renamed her Parima. Furness, Withy & Company took over the Quebec SS Co in 1919. She was scrapped in Italy in 1925.
SS Wakool was a refrigerated cargo liner that was launched in England in 1898. She belonged to Wilhelm Lund's Blue Anchor Line until 1910, when P&O took over the company. She was a troopship in the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902. In 1913 a Japanese company bought the ship and renamed her Kwanto Maru. In 1914 she was a Japanese depot ship in the siege of Tsingtao. In 1917 the French government bought her and renamed her Le Myre de Villers. The French government sold her in 1923, and she was scrapped in Italy later that year.
SS Grampian was a transatlantic ocean liner that was built in Scotland in 1907 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1925. She was operated originally by Allan Line, and later by Canadian Pacific Steamships. In the First World War she remained in commercial service but carried Canadian troops. In 1919 she survived a collision with an iceberg. In 1921 she was gutted by fire while being refitted. The refit was abandoned, and in 1925–26 she was scrapped.
SS Rio Tercero was a cargo steamship that was launched in England in 1912 as Eboe. She was renamed Fortunstella in 1938, and Rio Tercero in 1941. A U-boat sank her in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1942.
SS Himalaya was a P&O steam ocean liner that was built in Scotland in 1892 and scrapped in Germany in 1922. She operated scheduled services between England and Australia until 1908, and then to and from Japan until 1914.
SS Aden was a P&O cargo ship that was built in England in 1892. She was wrecked in the Indian Ocean in 1897, with the loss of 78 lives. She was the second of three P&O steamships to be named after the British Aden Colony. The first was launched in 1856 as Delta, completed as Aden, and hulked in 1875. The third was launched in 1946 as Somerset, renamed Aden in 1954, and scrapped in 1967.
