Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic church in Gibraltar.

Description

The church is of Gothic design, the foundation stone was laid on March 25, 1874, attended by Félix María Arrieta y Llano, Bishop of Cadiz, and John Baptist Scandella, Vicar Apostolic of Gibraltar, although it was not formally blessed until July 15, 1888. [1]

Amongst the parish priests of this church was Charles Caruana who went on to be the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar between 1998 and 2010. [2]

In the patio of the church is a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

A Maltese community has existed in Gibraltar since shortly after its capture by an Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1704. Following the Capture of Gibraltar, most of the existing population elected to leave, leaving behind a small population of around seventy. Immigration from neighboring Spanish towns soon followed, giving Gibraltar a very cosmopolitan population. Years of coexistence and intermarriage on the Rock soon led to a coalescence of Maltese, Italian and Andalusian culture, preserving the Mediterranean and Catholic nature of Gibraltar despite the centuries of British rule.

Charles Caruana CBE was a Gibraltarian Roman Catholic bishop of Maltese descent. He was appointed sixth Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar on 14 February 1998 and ordained on 24 May 1998. His retirement request was accepted on 18 March 2010. He died at St Bernard's Hospital, Gibraltar on 1 October 2010 following a bout of ill health.

Scandella is mainly remembered in Gibraltar for seeing the return of the statue of Our Lady of Europe to Gibraltar from Algeciras in Spain and for his efforts to improve education in the territory.
