Said Aqil Siradj is an Indonesian Islamic scholar and former chairman of the executive council of Nahdlatul Ulama,the largest Islamic organization in the world. The most recent publication of The 500 Most Influential Muslims by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan ranked him as the 20th most influential Muslim person in the world. [1]
Siradj has consistently spoken out in opposition to the November 2016 Jakarta protests. Siradj cited a fatwa that prohibited praying in the street as the protesters had planned since it disturbed the peace, [2] [3] [4] though his position was immediately opposed by Indonesian Ulema Council,an organization specifically of religious leaders which includes Nadhlatul Ulama leaders. [5] Siradj event cited the positions of the Maliki and Shafi'i schools of thought within Sunni Islam that prohibit praying the congregational prayers in the middle of a street. [6]
In addition to his leadership within Nahdlatul Ulama,Siradj also founded the Said Aqil Centre,an organization in Egypt which focuses on developing Islamic discourse in the Middle East, [1] and since 2021 has become the chairman of the board of commissioners of Kereta Api Indonesia. [7]
Nahdlatul Ulama is an Islamic organization in Indonesia. Its membership estimates range from 40 million (2013) to over 95 million (2021),making it the largest Islamic organization in the world. NU also is a charitable body funding schools and hospitals as well as organizing communities to help alleviate poverty.

The Islamic views on tobacco vary by region. Though tobacco or smoking in general is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran or hadith,contemporary scholars have condemned it as potentially harmful,and have at times prohibited smoking outright as a result of the severe health damage that it causes. Indonesian Ulema Council is Indonesia's top Islamic scholars body. MUI was founded in Jakarta on July 26,1975 during the New Order era. The council comprises many Indonesian Muslim groups including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU),Muhammadiyah,and smaller groups such as,Syarikat Islam,Perti,Al Washliyah,Mathla'ul Anwar,GUPPI,PTDI,DMI and Al Ittihadiyyah. December 2016 Jakarta protests,also known as 212 Action,the 3rd Defend Islam Action,and the 2 December Peace Protest,was a mass protest led by Islamist groups which took place on 2 December 2016,in Jakarta,Indonesia. During the protest,marchers demanded the termination of the gubernatorial office held by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok),who had been accused of blasphemy. The protest was the second demonstration against Ahok in 2016 following the previous rally which took place on 4 November,and it was succeeded by the February 2017 Jakarta protests.
The Islamic Defenders Front was an Indonesian hardline Islamist organization founded in 1998 by Muhammad Rizieq Shihab with backing from military and political figures. Since 2015,Ahmad Shabri Lubis has been the organization's leader,while Rizieq Shihab holds the title of Grand Imam of the FPI for life. Fatwa prohibiting the insulting of the most religious figures of Sunni Islam was published by Iran's Supreme Leader,Ali Khamenei,on 30 September 2010. The fatwa was issued following the insulting of Aisha by Yasser Al-Habib. This fatwa received various reactions from Shia and Sunni Muslims,and from Arabic and Western media.
In July 2005,Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI),a semi-official Islamic clerical body of Indonesia,issued a fatwa,or an Islamic legal opinion,against religious pluralism,liberalism,and secularism. The issuance of fatwa garnered substantial controversy and scholarly attention. The fatwa addressed the reformist trend of Islam which had been popular among the broad Indonesian society over the past 25 years. Such trends advocated for a more substantive reading of the Quran and Hadith,instead of literalist approaches taken by the majority of ulamas. MUI considered such ideas as incompatible with Islamic teaching,releasing the fatwa to promote a more literal reading of the Islamic scriptures. The fatwa was heavily criticized by progressive Muslim intellectuals.
Abuya Kyai Hajji Ahmad Muhtadi bin Dimyathi al-Bantani or better known as Abuya Muhtadi is an Indonesian Muslim cleric from Banten. He is known as one of the Muslim scholars close to President Joko Widodo. At the Zikir Kebangsaan which was first held by the Indonesian government in the Merdeka Palace in 2017,Muhtadi was one of the religious leaders invited by the president. In the 2019 Indonesian presidential election,he supported a friend who was also a Muslim cleric from Banten,Ma'ruf Amin,who became the running mate of incumbent presidential candidate,Joko Widodo. Even so,in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election,he supported Prabowo Subianto as a candidate for Indonesian President and instructed his students to vote for Subianto.
Kyai Haji Yahya Cholil Staquf,nicknamed Gus Yahya,is an Indonesian politician and Islamic cleric who has served as the chairman of the Executive Council of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) since December 2021. In the election of the 34th NU Conference at Lampung University,Bandar Lampung on 24 December 2021,Gus Yahya beat the incumbent Said Aqil Siradj,with the former gaining 337 votes and the latter 210 votes. He served as spokesperson of Abdurrahman Wahid from 1999 to 2001. On 31 May 2018,he was appointed as member of Presidential Advisory Council replacing Hasyim Muzadi by President Joko Widodo. Yahya is a former member of National Awakening Party (PKB).
