Samba de Amigo: Party Central [note 1] is a motion-based rhythm game developed and published by Sega. The game is a sequel to Samba de Amigo and was released on the Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2023. [1] In Samba de Amigo: Party Central, players shake their controllers like a set of maracas on time with the shapes on screen. In contrast to its predecessor, the game has less focus on Latin music and more on popular music genres in general. [3]
A virtual reality version for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro titled Samba de Amigo: Virtual Party [note 2] was released on October 12, 2023. [4] It is the first full virtual reality game published by Sega. [5] An Apple Arcade version, Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go [note 3] , was released on the same date as Party Central. [6]
Samba de Amigo: Party Central received generally positive reviews, but received criticism for inconsistent motion controls.
Similarly to its predecessor, the player is tasked with shaking their controllers, represented in-game by maracas, to different angles to the beat, being guided by the on-screen graphics. Six rings are arranged in a circle and balls come out from the center of the circle in Samba de Amigo: Party Central or far away in Virtual Party. The player must shake their controller to a ring's location when a ball reaches it. A line of arrows may also appear, reaching from one ring to another, and the player must move their controller along it. Occasionally, a stick figure appears and the player is told to copy its move, either static or moving, in order to gain extra points. When the player shakes to a multicolored ball with a question mark on it, a happening, [7] such as "High-Fives", "Crazy Dash", "Home Run", and "Pose Rush", is randomly selected and either a minigame is switched to (the player has to complete it for a higher score) or the gameplay is temporarily altered. Button controls are also supported. [8]
The player is represented by Amigo, who can be customised to wear different types of clothing purchased with in-game currency earned by completing songs and leveling up. [9] The environment becomes more lively based on the player's performance. [7]
The standard mode allows the player to play any song at any difficulty level. [9]
The "StreamiGo!" mode has Amigo trying to become a famous online streamer. The player must complete missions and defeat opponents to earn more followers. A simulated chat room for each character is displayed on-screen. [3] [9] [10]
There are both competitive and co-op two-player modes. [10] One of them is "Showdown", in which two players battle each other. [9] Another of them is "Love Checker", in which two players play together to see how compatible they are based on their performance. [2]
Four players can play together online. [9] "World Party" is an eight-player [3] online mode in which players, along with 12 computer-controlled ones, compete through three randomly-chosen songs to get obtain the highest score to avoid losing. Differing events occur and items can be used. At the end of each round, the losing players are eliminated. [7] [10] [2]
Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go has a story mode, the first in the series. In the story, Amigo seeks to "return lost music to the world". [11]

Shun Nakamura, the game's director [12] and producer, was the director of Samba de Amigo , the first work he directed, and wanted to create it again. He was also interested in virtual reality hardware and noticed a trend of reusing old intellectual properties in the video game industry. As a result, he proposed a revival of Samba de Amigo, feeling it was a suitable title for virtual reality. [5] [7] He and the development team aimed to adapt the game to present times while preserving its fundamentals and have it instill happiness in its players. [5] The game was based on the concept of "silly fun", which was explained by Nakamura to TechRadar as prioritizing fun and enjoyment of music over skill, contrasted to typical rhythm games. [12] The younger developers on the team had to be adjusted to the concept due to the difference and not being familiar with the fundamentals of Samba de Amigo. [7] The game was greatly influenced by TikTok, [5] reflecting on how users would entertain others with videos of themselves performing and enjoying music so that the game could correctly execute the "silly fun" concept for the present generation, with happenings being an example. [13] The main gameplay had already been established, so not much inspiration was derived from other rhythm games. [5]
Samba de Amigo, as an experimental game, [5] used Western music that Japanese audiences knew as it was intended for the regional market. When Samba de Amigo reached international audiences, some players expressed interest in playing to Japanese music and music other than Latin music. This was put into consideration for choosing the soundtrack, which is supposed to appeal to the international market, as well as the standard that songs should be enjoyable in a way that the rhythms are dynamic. People including members of the development team and overseas staff and advisors were considered for the soundtrack. [7] Sega's sound team created an original song for the game. [14]
Meta Quest 2 was chosen as the platform for Samba de Amigo: Virtual Party to reach large audiences and for how dynamic the game was. Nakamura, who didn't have knowledge of virtual reality games, studied ones that were not of the music genre. [5] The team encountered many difficulties, such as timing for scoring balls flying towards the player, distance of the balls when the player is posing, and distance of the screen from the player. [7]
Samba de Amigo: Party Central was announced during the Nintendo Direct on February 8, 2023. [3] Samba de Amigo: Virtual Party was announced during the 2023 Meta Quest Gaming Showcase on June 1, 2023. [15] Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go was announced on August 1, 2023. [6] A demo for Party Central was released on August 15, 2023, prior to the game's launch. [16]
There are nine downloadable content packs of songs [17] [18] that were released throughout the rest of 2023 after the Samba de Amigo: Party Central's launch, [19] and more downloadable content to be released in 2024. [18] The Digital Deluxe edition of Party Central, which contains the Sonic the Hedgehog Music Pack and Sega Music Pack of songs and costumes based on Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Space Channel 5 , Super Monkey Ball , and Puyo Puyo , began selling on launch day. [1] Players who pre-ordered Virtual Party received in-game cosmetics replicating the Quest 2 headset and Quest controllers. [20] The Persona 5 Royal Dress-up Pack, which contains cosmetics related to the game, was released on October 26, 2023. [21] The Kawaii Music Pack, released on November 29, 2023, includes the Love and Berry Fashion Set. [18]

Before the Samba de Amigo: Party Central's release, the demo version played by critics was received positively by them. Michael McWhertor of Polygon stated that "Sega has retained the soul of Samba de Amigo 's colorful arcade antics with Party Central", but noted it lacked the tactile feedback of the original Dreamcast game that made it more immersive. [24] On the other hand, Ruby Innes of Kotaku Australia praised the game's full usage of the Joy-Con's rumble mechanics, as well as cited the combination of motion-based rhythm gameplay and Samba de Amigo's art style as attractive. [9] Giovanni Colantonio of Digital Trends found it appealing as a rhythm game targeted towards casual audiences, but also found the motion controls to be inconsistent sometimes and reminiscent of the Wii's problems with motion controls. [8]
Samba de Amigo: Party Central received "mixed or average" reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. [28] Destructoid gave the game a six out of ten, mentioning that the game "provides a thrilling rhythm-based challenge with a selection of decent songs [...] It’s just a shame that the game’s Latin-inspired routes take a backseat to a poppier soundtrack." [29] The Gamer commented negatively on the game's music, claiming that "we’re trading ‘Samba de Janeiro’ for ‘Moves Like Jagger’, and that’s unforgivable." However, they remained positive about the inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog , Space Channel 5: Part 2 , and the K-pop downloadable content soundtracks. [35]

Samba de Amigo is a rhythm game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. The game was released in arcades in December 1999, and for the Dreamcast in 2000. A port for the Wii was also developed by Gearbox Software and Escalation Studios and released in 2008. Samba de Amigo draws on Latin American culture and its gameplay involves the player using controllers shaped like maracas to match a series of patterns displayed on-screen. The music is made of primarily popular Latin music songs rather than common or traditional samba. The game also features non-Latin pop songs.
Mambo a Go Go, is a music video game produced by Konami as part of their BEMANI franchise of games. Players must rhythmically beat conga drums as colored notes fall from the top of the screen. There are 3 drums, each one divided into three sections, giving players a maximum of nine places to hit.

The games feature fast, action-oriented gameplay requiring quick reflexes, featuring mecha called Virtuaroids or "VRs", that are large robots the player controls in battles against enemy VRs. The first game was Virtual On: Cyber Troopers (1995), which was released globally, while its following four installments in the series were mainly Japan exclusives where the series has retained high popularity.
Sonic Pinball Party is a video game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. It is a celebration of sorts for Sonic Team featuring many references to its previous games, mostly prominently Sonic the Hedgehog, Nights into Dreams, and Samba De Amigo. There was also a release on a Twin Pack cartridge bundled with Sonic Battle and Sonic Advance respectively in 2005.
Alien Storm (エイリアンストーム) is a beat 'em up shooter released as an arcade video game by Sega in 1990. It was ported to the Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System. The Mega Drive version was re-released on Wii's Virtual Console in 2007 and was also included on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game was also re-released on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in 2022.
Hyper Duel is a 1993 horizontal-scrolling shooter video game developed by Technosoft and released for arcades in Japan by Taito. It was later ported to the Sega Saturn in 1996. In the game, the player controls one of three characters piloting transformable fighters called Buster Gears, whose mission is to recover or destroy a prototype unit stolen by terrorist forces. The player can switch between a compact spaceship and a humanoid mecha. The game runs on the TEC442-A arcade system board.
Dance Praise is a series of dance video games developed by Christian video game developer Digital Praise, with a particular emphasis on Contemporary Christian music. The series began on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X computers, and later expanded to iOS devices. The series' first title, Dance Praise, was released on September 29, 2005 and gained popularity in the Christian gaming industry.
Rock Band is a series of rhythm games first released in 2007 and developed by Harmonix. Based on their previous development work from the Guitar Hero series, the main Rock Band games has players use game controllers modeled after musical instruments and microphones to perform the lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and vocal parts of numerous licensed songs across a wide range of genres though mostly focusing on rock music by matching scrolling musical notes patterns shown on screen. Certain games support the use of "Pro" instruments that require special controllers that more closely mimic the playing of real instruments, providing a higher challenge to players. Players score points for hitting notes successfully, but may fail a song if they miss too many notes. The series has featured numerous game modes, and supports both local and online multiplayer modes where up to four players in most modes can perform together.
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a 2010 kart racing video game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega. It was released for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and Windows, featuring characters from multiple Sega franchises. The game is the third title in the Sega All-Stars series, preceded by Sega Superstars Tennis. A mobile version was developed by Gameloft, and released for iOS in June 2011, as a paid download. A version for OS X was released by Feral Interactive in April 2013.
Green Day: Rock Band is a 2010 rhythm game developed by Harmonix, published by MTV Games, and distributed by Electronic Arts. It is the sixth console installment in the Rock Band series and the second band-centric game, following The Beatles: Rock Band (2009). It allows players to simulate rock music by using controllers shaped like musical instruments. The game's setlist consists of songs by American rock band Green Day. Rock Band features virtual depictions of the three band members performing the songs in new venues designed for the game.
Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA is a series of rhythm games created by Sega and Crypton Future Media. The series currently consists of 6 main titles, released on various PlayStation consoles, the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, and in arcades, the 2 Project Mirai games for the Nintendo 3DS, and 4 spin-offs for mobile and VR platforms. The series primarily makes use of Vocaloids, a series of singing synthesizer software developed by the Yamaha Corporation, and the songs created using these Vocaloids, most notably the virtual-diva Vocaloid Hatsune Miku.
Miku Flick/02 (ミクフリック/02) was a 2012 rhythm game created by Sega and Crypton Future Media for the iOS operating systems iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The game was a sequel to Miku Flick, released earlier that year, and a spin off of the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series of Vocaloid rhythm games. Like the original, the game primarily makes use of Vocaloids, a series of singing synthesizer software, and the songs created using these vocaloids, most notably the virtual-diva Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. The game was released internationally on August 10, 2012, making it the second Project Diva game to be released in English.
Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) is an online subscription service for the Nintendo Switch video game console. The service is Nintendo's third-generation online service after Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and Nintendo Network. Following an interim period which began with the launch of the Nintendo Switch where Nintendo offered online multiplayer free of charge and the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online Smartphone App on July 21, 2017, the subscription service officially launched on September 18, 2018.
