The township includes the village of Smithfield.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 5.8 square miles (14.9 km2), of which 5.6 square miles (14.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.3 km2) (2.25%) is water.

The racial makeup of the township was 48.45% White, 43.19% African American, 0.01% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 7.77% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.02% of the population.
