The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by most of the nations of Europe. Benjamin F. Abell was a professor of meteorology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Saint Louis University (SLU), where he was a member of the faculty from 1962-2011. To recognize and preserve his contributions as an outstanding member of the St. Louis radio community, Abell was a 2005–2006 inductee to the St. Louis Radio Hall of Fame.

He began blogging about weather and rainfall in 2008. In 2014, he started publishing on social media. His social media popularity increased after his accurate predictions during the 2015 Chennai floods.
