The St. Joseph's Cathedral [1] [2] also called Cathedral of Kuching is a religious building that is affiliated with the Catholic Church and is located in the city of Kuching, [3] capital of Sarawak state in northern Borneo island and east part of the Asian country of Malaysia. [4]

The building follows the Roman or Latin rite and is the main mother church or the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kuching (Archidioecesis Kuchingensis; Keuskupan Kuching Agung) which gained its current status by bull "Quoniam Favente Deo" of Pope Paul VI.

It is under the pastoral responsibility of Archbishop Simon Poh Hoon Seng since 4 March 2017. [5]

Simon Peter Poh Hoon Seng is the third and current Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching in Malaysia. Prior to being appointed, he had been serving as an auxiliary bishop in the same diocese.

Datuk Simon Michael Fung was a Malaysian prelate of the Catholic Church. He was named as the third Vicar Apostolic of the Vicariate of Kota Kinabalu and Titular Bishop of Catabum Castra in 1975, and then was elevated as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Kota Kinabalu in 1977, with both positions given by Pope Paul VI. He was the first Sabahan to ever become a Bishop in Malaysia. He died on 16 November 1985, two days after his 10th episcopal ordination anniversary.

Francis Chan was a Chinese Singaporean bishop of the Catholic Church. After finishing high school in Singapore, he studied for the priesthood at College General in Penang and was ordained a priest in 1939. Chan first served as an assistant pastor in Ipoh until 1946, with a three year interruption due to World War II. He subsequently returned to his hometown after the Japanese occupation ended and served as parish priest there for nine years. When the Holy See created the first two Malaysian dioceses of Kuala Lumpur and Penang in 1955, Chan was appointed as bishop of the latter see. He was consecrated in August of that same year, becoming one of the first two local bishops from Malaysia. A Council Father of the Second Vatican Council, Chan attended two sessions held at St. Peter's Basilica in 1962 and 1964. He died of terminal cancer in 1967. Chan was dubbed "The Singing Bishop" due to his penchant for music.
