Seri Teratai, located in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia, is the official residence of Penang's head of government, the Chief Minister of Penang. [1] The colonial-era double storey mansion was constructed in the early 20th century. [2] [3] [4]

Despite the building's status as the official residence of Penang's head of government, the building has been left unoccupied since 2009 due to its dilapidated condition. [2] [5] [6] This changed in 2019 when Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow moved into the premises on July after assuming office following the historic 14th General Election in 2018.

History

The double storey mansion, known at the time as the State Guest House, was built in the early 1900s. [2] [3] [4] Its architecture was believed to have been inspired by the German-born designer, Henry Alfred Neubronner.

Upon the independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957, the building was renamed in Malay as Rumah Tetamu. [4] It was inhabited by the first Chief Minister of Penang, Wong Pow Nee, during his tenure between 1957 and 1969.

When Koh Tsu Koon succeeded Lim Chong Eu as the Chief Minister in 1990, the former opted not to move to the mansion, choosing instead to stay in his private residence. [2] Thus the building was left vacated until 2008, when Koh, in turn, was replaced by Lim Guan Eng as the Chief Minister. Although Lim initially moved into the mansion, he was then taken aback by its state of disrepair. Extensive termite infestation forced the then Chief Minister to instruct the state's Public Works Department (JKR) to conduct termite inspection and to repair the mansion, which was simultaneously renamed Seri Teratai. [6] However, the exorbitant repair costs and the building's structural damage led to Lim eventually moving out in July 2009; Lim subsequently resided in his private residence at Pinhorn Road for the remainder of his tenure. [2] [6]

Although the current Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, had expressed his intentions of moving into the mansion in 2018, his move has similarly been hampered by the building's repair costs, estimated at RM1.2 million. [2]

Koh Tsu Koon Malaysian politician

SMK Cochrane is a secondary school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Founded in 1957 to provide secondary education to pupils who live near Cochrane Road. The school was inaugurated on 1 September 1965 by Datuk Harun Idris, Menteri Besar of Selangor at that time. It offers classes for students from Form 1 to Form 6. Zairil Khir Johari Member of the Penang State Executive Council

Zairil Khir Johari is a Malaysian politician and a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP). He is the Penang State Executive Councillor for Infrastructure and Transport. He was elected as the State Assemblyman for Tanjong Bunga, Penang in the 2018 Penang State Election. Prior to that, he was the Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera, Penang from 2013 to 2018, during which he was also the DAP Parliamentary Spokesperson for Education, Science and Technology. He is the son of Khir Johari, a former Cabinet minister. In December 2018, Zairil married lawyer and political activist Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud. Penang Undersea Tunnel

The Penang Undersea Tunnel is a tunnel under construction between Butterworth on the mainland and George Town on the island of Penang in northern Malaysia. Construction began in 2016. The 7.2 km tunnel will connect Butterworth, Seberang Perai in the east to George Town, Penang Island in the west. When completed in 2025, it will become the first undersea tunnel in Malaysia and the second in Southeast Asia after the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) in Singapore. The undersea tunnel is part of the Penang Roads and Tunnels project.

Dr. Afif bin Bahardin is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Seberang Jaya since May 2013. He was also the People's Justice Party's (PKR) Deputy Youth Chief and Deputy Chief of the Permatang Pauh Division. Furthermore, he served as the Member of the Penang State Executive Council (EXCO) for Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Rural Development and Health under in the former Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and current Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administrations under former and current Chief Ministers Lim Guan Eng and Chow Kon Yeow from May 2013 to his resignation in March 2020 for 7 years.
